Platner has until Monday at 5:00pm to exit so that Democrats can appoint a replacement candidate.

Maine resident here. Collins is very popular, especially among the suburban and rural populations. She may look like the Queen from Mr. Rogers show, but she is very shrewd, tough and, as she showed during the Kavanaugh debacle, not without scruples. She’s been elected over and over for 20 years and I suspect is trying now to play both ends against the middle, satisfy the other power brokers enough to keep her position while keeping the pro-Trump part of the state from abandoning her.
I wrote her about the SAVE act, by the way, and she gave what I thought was a cogent and reasonable response, saying that she is in favor of its central tenets and would vote for the House version but that Graham’s version in the Senate had problems.

The new candidate will not be vetted by the primary process, putting even more of a burden onto the republican candidate.

In this country, how can a person whose name never appeared on the initial primary ballot – and was never initially chosen by the people – be allowed to run in the general election and possibly serve in a high federal position?
Why can’t Maine hold a special election to fill the vacancy left by Platner’s departure? After all, the general election is still about 4 months away.
Are there any rules or laws about this type of situation at any level – federal, state or political party? After all, such a vacancy could occur if a candidate became severely disabled or died.
In short, how can a state political party shove a person down voters’ throats, with no actual public voter approval?

If you recall the Jared Beck lawsuit, when the same situation happened with Bernie, the DNC finally advised, in court, that they are a private corporation who can appoint ANYONE they want, regardless of primary, public support, etc. The appointee here will be interesting. I must assume that none of this current information about Platner is a surprise. Surely his history was easily vetted, and you have to assume that the woman who has just gone public about the ‘rape’ was known, and withheld, until just the right moment. It is worth whatever the cost is, to the Dems, to ensure they have a candidate that they assume will win against Collins, even if there was no assurance that they would win the Dem primary. The name of the appointed candidate will be to key to see if this appointment (vs primary) was the ploy from the beginning.

I think it was a strategic mistake for the republicans (not the smartest knives in the drawer) to pull the trigger on all this so early.
