There are approximately 45,000 U.S. troops on NATO bases within Germany. NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte is scheduled to arrive in Washington DC on Wednesday, following remarks by President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio about possible changes in the U.S. relationship with NATO.
Simultaneous to this, the German government has now enhanced their conscription laws with a requirement for all males aged 17 to 45 to request permission for travel out of Germany if their exit will be longer than 3 months.
As part of a rather unusual Russian invasion deterrence, Germany is trying to hit a new target of between 255,000 and 270,ooo active and trained military troops by 2030. The new conscription targets seemingly underpin a travel permit system for German men.
GERMANY – Germany has implemented a significant reform to its military conscription law effective in 2026, mandating that nearly all men aged 17 to 45 must obtain approval from the Bundeswehr before leaving the country for more than three months. This change, part of the Wehrdienst-Modernisierungsgesetz, expands the previous restrictions beyond crisis periods, applying continuously regardless of Germany’s security situation.
The reform aims to bolster the Bundeswehr’s personnel from about 184,000 to between 255,000 and 270,000 by 2035 by reintroducing mandatory conscription examinations for young men. However, the implementation details—such as the approval process and possible exceptions—remain unclear, creating uncertainty among affected individuals. The Bundeswehr is actively working to clarify these procedures and reduce bureaucratic hurdles but has not yet specified consequences for those who depart without permission.
This major policy shift has stirred significant public reactions, including widespread school strikes and influential peace demonstrations during Germany’s traditional Easter marches held from April 2 to April 6. The marches, involving over one hundred events nationwide, address issues ranging from human rights and climate change to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Iran, Gaza, and Syria. I was a 17 year old boot, I can’t fathom the idea of a 42 year old boot. In our company we had a 24 year old boot and his nickname was Pops. A 42 year old would be Grandpa.
When my Dad was in the South Pacific in the US Navy during WWII, he served on an ocean-going tug (ATF Tenino); in one letter he wrote home after the crew had survived the horrific typhoon that hit Buckner Bay at Okinawa (in October 1945); Dad was 21 at the time of the typhoon; he wrote about how “the old man” kept a cool head and got them through it – he noted to my grandmother that “the old man” was 27 years old and was a school teacher in civilian life before he got into the war.
During Vietnam, I worked as a Jet Mechanic with a Ssgt, two Tsgt’s and a Msgt who were called back in to serve again. They were much older than me at 18.

My gggrandfather fought in the civil war when he was 45 yrs old. He drove a cason and supply wagons. People of all ages can provide support.
Sure. Probably not combat duty. I had two cousins, 39 & 41, both of whom were drafted into WW2. They both served as guards along the Canadian border ! One caught pneumonia and almost died of it; he was discharged after recovering. The rest of the family thought it was bizarre and stupid and senseless. However…… I recently saw a war documentary piece which revealed there were German POW camps in the eastern Canadian wilderness with thousands of prisoners.
So, finally, 85 years later, it makes some sense.

The US Army just raised the age of enlistment to 42, eased marijuana conviction waivers, and adopted a waist-to-height ratio body composition checks.
Back in June 1917 the Draft originally focused on men aged 21 to 30. By August 1918 the Selective Service Act was amended to expand the registration age range to include all men 18 to 45 years old.

In the past Americans who traveled abroad had to be responsible for keeping up to date on their Selective Service status. In today’s age many countries are using digital apps for travel itineraries. People have to register their trip. It’s more common than one might think. These days the government can notify you be email that you have been conscripted if it ever came to that.
Now that all of the EU/NATO have decided not to help us in the Middle East, they are conscripting men into mandatory service. Once they feel they’re ready, I can see a false flag blamed on RUS and a trigger of Article five to drag us in.
