The EU has balked at the request of President Trump to support military escorts for EU oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz destined for European Ports. However, it is the position of German Chancellor Fredrich Merz which really highlights the arrogance of the issue.
Germany has deactivated its nuclear reactors and decided not to purchase Russian oil/gas. As a consequence, the German industrial economy is contracting; the German auto industry is collapsing; German manufacturing plants are closing – and mass layoffs have been announced.
Into this self-created dynamic, Germany has become dependent on (1) Oil and Gas from the middle east, and (2) LNG from the USA. Germany is a completely dependent nation on the issue of energy production. Yet, this is Germanys position:

Setting aside for a moment that “the middle east is not a matter for NATO,” while reminding ourselves Ukraine is also not a NATO member state – yet Germany is supporting the pro-war ‘coalition of the willing,’ President Trump previously pointed out that NATO would never come to the aid of the USA when the Greenland Arctic Security debate was going on.
The EU in general, and Germany specifically, is essentially proving President Trump’s point. However, as a result of intentional migration, Germany has over five million Muslim residents now residing inside the country. We should consider that this overlay is also part of their internal political consideration.
What Chancellor Merz said next is almost too European to be real, but it is:
The German government destroyed affordable energy for Germans. The German government refuses to escort their own equity stakes to mitigate energy costs for Germans. Now the German government will limit the price increases to once per day to provide relief to Germans.

If the EU/NATO countries don’t want to support their own oil shipments, then pull the USA out of EU/NATO support arrangements.

If when this is over with the U.S. has gained any degree of control over the distribution of oil from the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, then the U.S. should impose a surcharge on every barrel passing through the strait. That surcharge should cover the cost of securing safe passage and should continue at least for as long as safe passage needs to be secured. Of course the surcharge should be waived for those countries that assisted in providing safe passage, but not for those who refused. We could also add the surcharge to the price of LNG sales from the U.S. to those countries that refused to participate. Just seems fair. They will all have snits of outrage if we do that, but we know darn well they would not hesitate to do it to us.
Better yet, let the US Marines take Iran’s Oil Island oil shipping depot, and we then control the purse strings for Iran oil sold, like in Venezuela, then Iran goes on the knees to beg! Why do you think he just took out their defenses on that island? Trump has alway said we should get something back from our war efforts!

What good does removing the mask from NATO really do when the USA is continuing to participate in NATO? Will the USA remove any troops from bases in NATO aligned countries? Will the USA continue to allocate financial funds to NATO? The answer is most likely a no.

Obviously the bases are strategic. In particular for sustainment. The actual combat force is mostly in Poland and Romania with a small contingent in Kosovo. Though yes there are two permanent Army brigades (Germany and Italy) and Air and Missile defense units. Air Force mostly out of the UK and Italy and Turkey. Navy in Spain and sustainment in Italy. Of course there are going to be various intel and communication sites (bases). The “number of bases” metric is the least important way to determine combat-capable footprint.
Consider the current war where 5th Fleet command and logistics in Bahrain is pretty much shut down. We are depending on those EU bases.
