Writing on a Truth Social post earlier this evening, President Trump is threatening to block the U.S. side of a new bridge that links Detroit, Michigan to Ontario, Canada:
(Truth Social) – “As everyone knows, the Country of Canada has treated the United States very unfairly for decades. Now, things are turning around for the U.S.A., and FAST! But imagine, Canada is building a massive bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They own both the Canada and the United States side and, of course, built it with virtually no U.S. content. President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel.
Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just “take advantage of America!” What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING! Ontario won’t even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don’t think so.
The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup. The Tariffs Canada charges us for our Dairy products have, for many years, been unacceptable, putting our Farmers at great financial risk. I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve. There’s really no deal available for them -least not one where they can still pretend they’re sovereign.
They won’t shut up and try to cut the best deal they can until the actual negotiations over what comes after USMCA between U.S. and Canada have begun. When PT and team lay out the official U.S. position and what will happen if Canada does not accept, only then will the Canadian govt see through their delusions and realize they are screwed, and that neither China or the EU or both combined can realistically provide an alternative. It will be fun to watch.
I think one thing PT should do is insist that Chinese goods coming in to the U.S. from Canada will invoke the exact same U.S. tariffs as they would if coming directly from China, and any Canadian goods made or assembled with any percentage of Chinese components will pay those same tariffs. And those cheap Chinese EVs they are planning to send via Canada should be banned from import to the U.S. All that would pretty much clobber Carney’s naive dream of using China to counter loss of their USMCA advantages.
The Chinese goods coming through Canada shouldn’t be allowed at all! That’s a pass-thru, and a no-no. Let the Canadians stew in their Chinese soup, eh!

I really question some of those who advise him and if they’re not purposely feeding him bad advice.
Things like that in the messages get more people who wouldn’t normally pay attention to read the entire message while looking for the controversial part. He also gets his message out to people who wouldn’t normally see it by forcing the press to cover it precisely because of statements like that.
Another example was his video on election fraud with the Obamas meme as apes at the end. He got his election fraud points out because the left went bonkers about the Obama depicted as apes.

As it is, the Snow Canadians who regularly buy goods across the border try to conceal as much as they can from paying provincial taxes. I’m more concerned about this as a potential migration corridor. The danger of reciprocal trade ses a bit of a stretch. Does Trump think the Canadians plan to flood Michigan with cheap milk and wheat?
Will Canadians come to the US to buy lots of stuff, have medical tests and operations they can’t get, etc.? Or will US citizens rush to buy Canadian goods and services we already have lots of?
Whose interests does it serve for Canadians and US Americans to go from friendly perceptions and relations to hostility?
You don’t have to own the bridge to profit from it – why not just charge an enormous fee to drive off the bridge onto US soil?
