From a pragmatic standpoint, a European demilitarized zone, stood up and supported by EU military forces, would appear to be the best solution. However, the “coalition of the willing” say they are willing to put security troops into Ukraine, but only if the USA will defend them if attacked by Russia. In essence, quasi-NATO forces on a non-NATO country, that if attacked would draw the entirety of NATO into the conflict, including the United States.
The U.K, France, Germany and EU Commission want a security structure similar to NATO for Ukraine that legally binds the United States to defend their interests if the ceasefire does not hold. President Trump has rejected this construct as yet another way for Europe to pull the U.S into a conflict zone that is not in our vital national security interests.
The ceasefire proposal structured by Trump, Witkoff and Kushner – seemingly supported by Russia, does not permit Ukraine to join NATO; however, EU membership is entirely up to the EU and people of Ukraine to decide. If Ukraine joins the EU, then EU forces alone should provide the security guarantee, not NATO which includes the U.S. and Canada.
It will be interesting to see how the Europeans organize their “security guarantee” proposal, which is reportedly the intent of the December 15th summit in Berlin.
The European ruling class is supporting Zelenskyy as a proxy hedge against Russia. Meanwhile, while the non-ruling class of Ukrainian young men continue to be killed on the Eastern fields of Ukraine as their security is being debated.

I think, don’t know, it works this way: China runs a trillion dollar surplus in trade while the U.S. runs an enormous trade deficit, so dollars flow to China, and cheap junk flows to the U.S.; China has no domestic source of oil, so it takes the dollars it gets and buys oil from the gulf states, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. The Gulf States, Saudi, and Iran need Euros to buy the goods they need, because the U.S. doesn’t export much of anything, so the dollars they get from China, now Petrodollars, are either deposited in European banks or laundered in Ukraine. The European banks take the Petrodollars, now Eurodollars, and buy U.S. Treasury bonds, and use these as reserves while lending out Euros.
What if, for discussion, the U.S. normalized relations with Russia, and created a mechanism to easily convert U.S. dollars to Rubles? If that happens, then the Gulf States, Saudi, and Iran could buy much of the goods they need from Russia, using the dollars they get from China. I think that idea, which could move the money laundry to Russia, is what gives the European elites nightmares. These money flows can be seen as propping up the European banks. Without any portion of it, the EU would be in a world of hurt. The laundry in Ukraine may be seen as a way of getting the exchange job done faster and despite various sanctions. It is evidence of European economic weakness, not strength, but they still have their banks.
The utter temerity of our vassal states in Europe is only exceeded by their delusions of grandeur. Europe’s only offers are nostalgia and moralizing lectures The sooner Zelensky is out of the picture, the sooner Trump can arrange to access the treasure hoard of tangible resources under the ground in Russia, which would benefit American citizens far more than being on the hook for Europe’s welfare.

The USSR, under Stalin, was in the process of reneging on their commitments with respect to Eastern Europe, Balkans and to some extent Asia. There were major US supporters for this operation for the very same reason. They all saw a reckoning with Stalin’s ambition and the Western Allies as being very close at hand …. so the plan was to strike while the West was at the height of it’s military powers v/v the USSR’s position. Awareness of USSR Ambition and creation of NATO were the alternative end results of not pursuing the Operation.
There IS NO rationale that can link today’s the positions of Russia to the USSR of 1945. The entire purpose of Operation Unthinkable does not exist.

We’re broke. We’re overextended. We have troops in something like 150 countries around the world to maintain this empire. The interest on the national debt is $1 trillion. We’re printing money on our way into a debt spiral that is untenable. Like the formerly great Britain and the 15th century Spanish empire, we’re on a rapid decline to a collapse. Trump is doing what needs to be done. Stop these wars as soon as possible and let the regional powers handle the conflicts. Hopefully this will take the pressure off the US military and allow us to downsize these bases around the world. That and Trump’s tariff and trade policies are the beginnings of a rebuilding effort of America’s once great industrial economy. It’s frustrating to see all the entrenched stake holders try and torpedo us. Even our own Republican party.

The Russian government is determined that no Russian will ever forget what “War” is, and what it costs. Because, “The Great Patriotic War” damned near cost them everything – both on their Western and then their (new) Eastern fronts. They paid by far the greatest price in blood.
