Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Paris talking to Emmanuel Macron last weekend while Rubio, Witkoff and Kushner were meeting with Ukraine officials in Florida. This telephone call is reported to have taken place the following day, on Monday.
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and European Council President António Costa held a conference call.
A transcript of the call was leaked to Spiegel, a German news outlet. According to the narrative the assembled group of EU leaders were discussing how the Trump administration was going to betray Ukraine in order to get a peace deal with Russia. The gist of the narrative sounds accurate, though some of the EU leaders are denying the specifics of the wording used.
EUROPE – “There is a possibility that the U.S. will betray Ukraine on the issue of territory without clarity on security guarantees,” Macron said, according to Spiegel, adding there was “a great danger” for Zelenskyy. The Élysée did not immediately respond to POLITICO’s request for comment. Spiegel reported the Élysée denied in a statement to the German outlet that Macron spoke of any betrayal. “The president did not use those words,” Macron’s office said, per Spiegel.
Merz chimed in that Zelenskyy had to be “extremely careful in the coming days.”
“They are playing games, both with you and with us,” Merz said, seemingly referring to Washington’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — the son-in-law of American President Donald Trump — who spent five hours locked in talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
Merz’s spokesperson Stefan Kornelius told POLITICO: “As a matter of principle, I do not confirm or comment on snippets of conversation.”
Finland’s Stubb seemed to agree with Merz, according to the transcript. “We cannot leave Ukraine and Volodymyr alone with these guys,” he said, apparently referring to Witkoff and Kushner, which attracted agreement from Rutte.
“I agree with Alexander — we must protect Volodymyr [Zelenskyy],” the NATO chief said. NATO declined to comment when reached by POLITICO.

The EU is very worried President Trump may formulate a peace agreement then present the final terms to Ukraine without the EU being involved in the construct of the details.
The EU is opposed to any peaceful end to the conflict, because the EU and NATO have positioned their collective economies to only benefit if the military spending continues; they are backstopping their spending with the confiscated Russian assets.
This phone call is reported to have taken place one day after Witkoff, Kushner and Rubio met with the Ukraine delegation to discuss terms, and exactly one day before Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow. For the Europeans to be sending warning signals to Zelenskyy is really ridiculous.
The Ukraine team was literally with Rubio and the U.S. delegation the day before Witkoff/Kusher left for Moscow.
This call with Zelenskyy doesn’t make sense from the perspective of the EU telling Zelenskyy what is going on, because Zelenskyy’s own team is right there in every moment of the discussions.

Trump listened to both sides and met the concerns of both sides, which is how he arrived at the compromise agreement. Russia doesn’t want a foreign military on its doorstep; that was part of Russia’s bottom line. Ukraine wanted to its security guaranteed; that was part of its bottom line. Trump’s plan met both of their bottom lines.
But the European powers insisted that their troops be stationed in Ukraine as part of any peace agreement, even though they knew that such a provision would not be acceptable to Russia. They want the war to continue. That is their bottom line.
When your intentions are HOSTILE, you want your armies at your enemy’s doorstep so you can easily supply them across “friendly” territory when you start the war. There is no doubt that NATO is not “defensive” anything.
What they’re not considering is that they do not have the military and industrial power to make good on their threats. Russia does, in abundance. And, their “wunderwaffen” are more “wunderful” than yours. If EU did what they want, the outcome would be brutal – and short.

I think that you are correct that the European powers want to start a war with Russia. Their problem is that they want the US to fight it with them. In order to get the US involved, they need a pretext so that they can claim that Russia just attacked them and therefore just attacked NATO.
They think that a war between NATO and Russia would be quickly won by them. They have learned nothing from Napoleon’s and Hitler’s attacks against Russia. Even worse, they would be playing “Russian roulette,” assuming that Russia would never turn to nuclear weapons, even if it were losing.

If you strip away the illusion of the leak, the picture gets simple. Kyiv isn’t driving anything. Zelenskyy isn’t setting a strategy. Ukraine is the object of negotiation, not a participant with agency. So they aren’t the leaker.
That leaves the EU or the U.S., and the evidence doesn’t point to Brussels.
When Europe leaks, it leaks material that strengthens its moral narrative: the EU as the responsible steward of the war effort, the principled guarantor of Ukraine, the adult in the room. This transcript doesn’t do that. It makes them look petty, insecure, and frantic. It shows them warning Zelenskyy about conversations his own people were present for. It shows them worried about being cut out of talks they thought they controlled. Nothing in that helps Brussels. It diminishes them.
That’s the first tell.
The second tell is tone. These leaders sound like they’re scrambling for relevance. If the EU wanted to leak a call, they’d leak something that painted the Americans as impulsive or naïve. Instead, this leak shows the Europeans acting like the prom committee afraid someone else chose the music. They don’t leak material that exposes their own weakness.
Which leaves Washington.
This leak makes sense as a U.S. move. It publicly demonstrates that the Europeans are not partners in peace. It highlights their real worry: that Trump will end the war without their permission. It also exposes how dependent Europe has become on keeping the conflict going and on using frozen Russian assets as the financial backbone of their wartime budgets.
Leaking this transcript sends three messages from the U.S. to the EU prom committee at the same time:
To Europe:
We see your insecurity and your panic. We aren’t asking for your consent.
To Moscow:
We’re serious about exploring terms, and Brussels isn’t part of that track.
To Kyiv:
You don’t have two masters. You have one, and we’re reminding everyone of that.
This looks like a U.S. shot back across the bow after Brussels leaked the Witkoff call. And the message is simple:
If you want to play the leak game, we have more material than you do, and we can make you look worse than you can make us look.
Now sit down and eat your porridge.
Also been wondering who leaked the call. Der Spiegel is likely a German equivalent of WP, NYT etc., and they probably get their leaks from specific internal German government or internal EU sources just like they do. Would like to hear if anyone has any informed thoughts on that. As we have learned here, where the leak came from can be just as important as the leak itself.
If this has even a semblance or smidge of truth to it, then the US needs to exit NATO now. Not tomorrow: TODAY!

A “betrayal” cannot occur in any relationship that is one-sided. I may choose to donate to a charity this year, and I may choose to donate to a different charity next year. This is not a betrayal, this is a choice. My choice.
The EU, NATO, Ukraine, it’s all a one-way street. To simply say “we’re sick of being sucked dry” shouldn’t lead to so much pearl clutching, so much searching for hidden meaning. And if so, that’s their time wasted. It shouldn’t be ours.

So, Ukraine is the funnel down which the money from US tax payers is poured, directly into the pockets of the EU, NATO, the military-industrial-financial complex and assorted US politicians.
Mr. President, I suggest that if this attempt does not work, that you turn off the spigot.
Congress may balk, but perhaps that could be remedied by suggesting that the full, unredacted Epstein files may be released…

Alex was raised in Arizona and now lives in Cyprus; his parents are allegedly Cypriot and he is about 52 or 53 years old.
Alex’s Duran partner is from England, so that may account for some of Alex’s biasness.
Miss Susan is about old enough to be his mother and is very well read in addition to contributing her own life experience to the debate.
Alex’s rudeness and impatience was disappointing to say the least.
The host was obviously unhappy with Alex’s disrespectful display.
