Last night President Trump terminated all trade discussions with Canada following the government of Canada running a false political ad in the USA, using manipulated Ronald Reagan remarks against U.S tariffs.
Earlier today Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about the issue to his assembled stenographers in media, and shortly thereafter he had a phone call with Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Carney and Ford decided to run the ad during the World Series and then stop it on Monday.
It would be illegal for the USA government to run an ad in Canada. The Canadian government does not permit foreign interests to express political opinions against their domestic policies on their controlled broadcasting operations.

I think Canada has the chance of a turnaround. Trump is helping by hammering Canada every time our leaders make a stupid move. There are many disillusioned Canadians who foolishly voted for Carney and now see his hypocrisy. The Conservative opposition in the House of Commons is doing a good job of pointing out the failures of Carney and the Liberals. There is more attention being given to the infiltration of China and transnational organized crime into Canada. People are waking up but it’s slow. China has always treated Canada shabbily because they know they can. I doubt a trade deal will change that.
I believe America is on the verge of a huge economic boom. Canadians will see that and it will influence their opinions, especially if Canadians are in a recession or depression. Nothing speaks louder than success and results, It’s a hard lesson but I have hope for change.

Brendan Carr at FCC needs to start issuing notices to the broadcasters. He can stop the ads from airing if he acts now.
Broadcast television service has become pretty irrelevant these days, except for local news. There are still some sports that locals carry but that’s becoming rare. World Series and Super Bowl are the main ones.
That said, I don’t think viewpoint discrimination would fly with the courts.

The video was edited in a manner that made it appear Reagan was saying the opposite of what he really said pertaining to tariffs. There is a difference between broadcasting to a massive audience an easily provable lie and viewpoint discrimination.
Also, broadcast television is not irrelevant in sports broadcasting, it’s the only thing keeping it alive… for now.

Generally, President Reagan did not like tariffs and he explains the reasons for his position. However, he did strongly believe in using tariffs as a tool to protect an American industry when it was threatened by a foreign source using cheap labor and other cost advantages to undercut US manufacturers. He argued for his right as President to impose tariffs when needed, and to not have Congress usurp that authority.
(To put it bluntly, I’m pretty sure Reagan knew Congress was full of corrupt, lobbyist-bribed scoundrels who, for the right price $$$, would screw Americans’ out of their jobs in favor of a foreign supplier.)
But the BIG point is – Reagan’s anti-tariff position in most of that speech is misleading since we CANNOT justifiably compare Reagan’s America in 1985 with Trump’s America in 2025. They are vastly different, since Reagan still had 95% of US manufacturing intact (some parts were beginning to move offshore by the late ’80s).
In stark contrast, by Trump’s first term, American manufacturing had already been fully gutted and moved overseas to cheap labor, few safety regs protecting workers, and nonexistent worker benefits. President Trump knows that tariffs are needed (among other incentives) to induce manufacturers to return their operations back onshore inside the US. IMHO, if Ron Reagan were alive today, he’d agree with PDJT’s tariffs.

The referendum vote is not to join the US but to become a separate country from Canada. Even if the referendum manages to vote for separation it’s not an automatic event but it does send a huge message to Ottawa. After a successful yes vote it still has to go through much negotiation to become an actual event. If Alberta leaves Canada there is a good chance Saskatchewan and even BC will leave as well. Without Alberta there is no Canada. Western Canada has long complained about their unfair treatment from Ottawa. Alberta oil is essential to Canada’s economy. Western Canadians are tired of a good chunk of their taxes going to underperforming provinces in the form of equalization payments. They are also fed up with Ontario and Quebec, the two highest population provinces having control over Western Canada. Our interests are not represented by Ottawa.
If Alberta leaves Canada I’m going with them.

SMRs could expediate river system development time, power remote ports and dredging operations.
Imported icebreaking technology enables year-round barge transport of potash, grain, and critical minerals to Churchill and beyond. This integrated corridor would link western Canada to global Arctic trade routes, transforming landlocked provinces into strategic energy and logistics hubs, and go some way to re-establishing Canadian industry.

Liberals in Canada are synonymous with Democrats of the USA. Conservatives are more aligned with the Republican Party.
