BERLIN — U.S. President Donald Trump will join European leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for an emergency virtual summit on Wednesday.
The call, organized by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, comes ahead of Friday’s summit in Alaska between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the war in Ukraine.
The virtual summit will focus on pressure options against Russia, questions about Ukrainian territories seized by Russia, security guarantees for Kyiv and the sequencing of potential peace talks, a German government spokesperson told POLITICO.
Merz and other European leaders demand that Putin first agrees to a ceasefire before any peace talks or land swaps between Moscow and Kyiv can take place. They have also made clear that any potential territorial exchanges must be balanced and agreed with Kyiv, and that Ukraine should receive firm security guarantees to protect it against further aggression.
Three diplomats told POLITICO that Merz’s team had been in intensive discussions with other capitals in recent days to organize the virtual meeting. (read more)
It is simply so (awfully …) comical to hear these people talk about “protecting against further aggression by Russia,” when it was their proxy army which was amassed at Russia’s borders, obviously ready to invade. They were brashly circulating maps which showed Russia divided-up into forty-odd impotent little countries, each one given a name and a flag.
When Russia, very simply, read the tea-leaves correctly and decided to strike first. Thereby taking the military advantage which they have never lost. Mind you, they’re not going to give up that advantage at some table. They’re not going to fall for “Minsk 3.” They clearly remember what you finally admitted.
Russia stated its mission statement on day one, and has never deviated from it. But, they have the capacity to carry it out. (You don’t.)
Russia knows damned well what “War” is, and what it costs. They celebrate “Victory Day” every year so that their countrymen never forget. Europe seems to have utterly forgotten everything.
Russia is the one who is patiently inviting negotiations – as long as they are real ones. But, even now, Europe is once again acting in quite-visibly bad faith.

My guess is that Trump and Putin will agree not only to Russian’s sovereign acquisition of the four eastern Ukrainian Oblasts and Crimea, along with no future NATO membership and no foreign troops stationed in Ukraine going forward, but an ECONOMIC deal in the form of a partnership between the United States and Russia to rebuild [what’s left of] Ukraine in it entirety, and to provide further, ongoing economic assistance and LOAN guarantees (which they will describe as Economic SECURITY Guarantees), so that the whole of Ukraine and all of its people can prosper, advance, modernize, and get rid of the NAZI control of Ukraine’s historically, long=standing and deeply entrenched corrupt government.
What’re the stupid leaders of the world going to say to that proposal?

America has always been at our best when we pursue our national interests, home and abroad. Where we fall short is when we get conned into fighting wars instigated by corrupt forces in our own government (Gulf of Tonkin anyone?) or wars for others where we have no national interest (Korea). We also err when we take on nation-building where ‘nationhood’ has no meaning for the locals or us (staying way too long in Afghanistan and Iraq). When we fully commit and hit hard, destroy the enemy and then go home (Japan, Germany in WWII), everybody heals and moves on. This concept of proportional force and playing nice to not alienate enemies is stupid and gets our people killed to no end.
The war in Ukraine is everything that is wrong with US warfighting, strategically and tactically, in the present day. We have no quarrel with Russia, and the only way to bring them to heel is hitting hard, and that is a nuclear exchange. No one will move on and heal from that.
I wonder what would happen if all the infantry troops, in all armies, would unionize.

Why of course the people don’t want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don’t want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. This is crazy from top to bottom. In addition to their (and our) role in starting this war, no European nation has a credible military force, thus they’re counting on dragging American blood into this. Germany, recognizing the parlous state of it’s ‘Army’, announced they’d buy a bunch of their own Leopard II tanks to bulk up, overlooking the fact that that tank got clowned in Ukraine. England’s Challenger did so poorly they withdrew it from combat to end the embarrassment it brought. NEITHER country has a new tank on the horizon, while Russia is modifying it’s tanks with lessons learned on the battlefield.
In short, Europe is trying to continue a war for which it is not at ALL prepared.
