Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff held another meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier today. This is the fifth meeting between Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin.
Witkoff has spent more time with Putin than any government official in recent history.

If we name the topics, first of all, of course, it is the Ukrainian crisis. And the second topic is the prospects for possible development of strategic cooperation between the US and Russia.
On our side, in particular on the Ukrainian issue, some signals were conveyed. Corresponding signals were received from President Trump as well.
The situation now is that our president has full information, that is, our signals and signals from President Trump. And Trump has not yet been informed about the results of this meeting. You are completely wrong! Zelensky has to stay in power in order for Trump to achieve a peace deal between Putin and Zelensky. Trump is a master negotiator. He forges agreements because there is something in them for both sides. What will Zelensky get? He’ll get to stay in power.

India was already facing the start of 25% tariffs going into effect at midnight Thursday, but by refusing to cease imports of Russian oil, which India refines and exports at a substantial markup, it made itself vulnerable to increased sanctions. Trump used as a vehicle for the action an executive order titled “Addressing Threats to The United States by the Government of the Russian Federation.
Russia produces their own oil from their own wells and sells it to India who buys it with it’s own money.
How is that black market?
India then sells it to Germany.
Then Germany uses the oil to manufacture Mercedes Benz, BMW and Volkswagens so they can sell them in America, keep their workers employed and pay for the tariff money we need!

Part of the economic deals that PDJT is making also includes purchasing of US oil in order to get lower tariffs.
If India wants to purchase oil from other nations then they do not get the lower tariffs with the USA.

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.) (IEEPA), the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.), section 604 of the Trade Act of 1974, as amended (19 U.S.C. 2483), and section 301 of title 3, United States Code, I hereby determine and order:
Section 1. Background. Executive Order 14066 of March 8, 2022 (Prohibiting Certain Imports and New Investments With Respect to Continued Russian Federation Efforts To Undermine the Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity of Ukraine), expanded the scope of the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14024 of April 15, 2021 (Blocking Property With Respect To Specified Harmful Foreign Activities of the Government of the Russian Federation), to include the actions taken against Ukraine by the Government of the Russian Federation. To address that unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, Executive Order 14066 prohibited, among other things, the importation into the United States of certain products of Russian Federation origin, including crude oil; petroleum; and petroleum fuels, oils, and products of their distillation.
I have received additional information from various senior officials on, among other things, the actions of the Government of the Russian Federation with respect to the situation in Ukraine. After considering this additional information, among other things, I find that the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066 continues and that the actions and policies of the Government of the Russian Federation continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
To deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil. In my judgment, imposing tariffs, as described below, in addition to maintaining the other measures taken to address the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, will more effectively deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066.

On August 6, 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order addressing threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation, determining that the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14066 of March 8, 2022, continues due to the actions and policies of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The order imposes an additional ad valorem duty of 25 percent on imports of articles from India, finding that India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil. This tariff is effective for goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption on or after August 27, 2025, with specific exceptions for goods in transit before that date.
The action is intended to counter the Russian Federation’s threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy by deterring countries from supporting Russia’s economy through oil imports. The Secretary of Commerce, in coordination with other senior officials, is tasked with determining if other countries are importing Russian oil and recommending further actions to the President.

I don’t see Ukraine making significant territorial concessions, especially when Trump is threatening to impose additional sanctions on Russia if an agreement is not quickly reached.
Has Ukr ever even said it would be willing to let Russia keep even Crimea (the warm water port that Russia finally succeeded in wresting from the Ottoman Caliphate in 1783)?
All I have heard from Ukraine is zealous insistence that they will never make ANY territorial concessions.
I am dreading the consequences if Trump makes the mistake of squeezing Russia harder. The very idea suggests a lack of awareness that it is America that turned Ukraine into a near-peer enemy of Russia.
We provided hundreds of billions of dollars, military equipment, technology, and even targeting, to the point where Russia now sees Ukraine as posing an existential threat that they must eliminate.
All via a very hot de facto proxy war by the U.S. against Russia, something that for the last several decades would have been seen as an immediate invitation to nuclear war.
Trump’s leeway for avoiding that disastrous escalation comes from the fact that he didn’t start this war, Biden (actually Obama) started it when he forbade Zelensky to go through with his plan to accept the very fair peace deal Russia offered in early 2022.
If Trump decides to up the hostility still further, adding economic warfare on top of the military support, his “not my war” position disappears. Trump will own the proxy war, and every looming bad possibility will suddenly be energized.
We want to ally with Russia, to cooperate economically, to cooperate in fighting jihadist Islam (orthodox Islam), to cooperate in space, etcetera.
Instead we would back to having Russia as chief mischief maker, undermining allies, arming foes, maybe even with nuclear weapons, and the risk of direct nuclear conflict would become very real.
We need to pull back from the proxy war, not exacerbate it.
That tells us what the symmetrical bargaining stick for Ukraine should be.
Where would they be without our support? What territorial holdings would they be able to maintain without us providing hundreds of billions in equipment, technology, and other support?
They would be at Russia’s mercy, and since we are NOT planning on continuing Obama’s hot proxy war against Russia, that is what will be facing them if THEY don’t quickly agree to a peace deal with Russia.
The alternative for them will be something like that they lose everything east of the Dnipro.
That wouldn’t be our prescription. It would just be the reality.
The alternative to coming to a deal would be that we let them and Russia fight it out between them, with us not interfering, and that’s a very believable threat, because that is where we need to be.
We can’t continue in a hot proxy war with Russia. That would be MAD.
Setting up the bargaining table this way gives strong incentive for BOTH sides to make a deal now, while threatening only Russia is a prescription for disaster.
