If Iran strikes U.S. military facilities, President Trump will be pulled into a larger military response, and so – the potential for the escalation spiral begins.

Reading the sub-thread, I reflected on how much of the U.S. that China has captured without firing one shot in direct aggression.
Collating the facts of their decades long invasion would in my opinion be an interesting discussion.
China IMO is about opening and dominating new markets. North America is one of them. Africa is another. Central and South America is another. Europe is another. Would they love to control the vast resources of Russia and the FSU? You decide.

I had some Iranian neighbors that had escaped when the Shah was kicked out. They and their friends and family were very nice people. Hated the Mullahs.

It might be a little early to declare “we are at war.” Given the past behavior of Iran, what we did was to actually PREVENT them from using their nuclear weapons on us or anyone. The next move is theirs. They can choose to behave and become part of a peaceful coalition – or not. We have set them back from their nuclear path – that is all. Any country on the planet can choose to attack America – but now they know they will pay a price if they do. Not sure that even Iran wants to see their country obliterated. I remember a discussion yesterday about how the recently opened Iran-China rail link would take pressure off the shipping of oil and I posited quantifying how that would work in a practical sense, comparing tanker cars to one oil tanker ship as one example of volume.
I haven’t done the research on that rail link and their rolling stock but oil and rails were in my past so the thought came to mind. My guess is China would prefer their oil to continue by ship so whatever actions facilitate that is what they’ll support.

Here’s what’s most disappointing for me… the context for this whole thing is:
1.) Trump is the person who — astonishingly — stepped into No Man’s Land between North and South Korea, and shook the hand of a nutty little despot in an attempt to broker some form of functional relationship between the U.S. and North Korea. This effort took years of work to even get that far. Recall: it started with Twitter trolling… and ended with the world saying “WTF just happened?”.
2.) Trump made a point of addressing the Iran threat up front in his presidency. He did not sit around hoping that things would magically get better, or depend on the various useless “allies” at our “disposal”.
And here’s the disappointment/frustration: with the Isreal-Iran fiasco we didn’t get the “years of work” part. Trump is The Deal Maker, yet WITHIN THE FIRST FIVE MONTHS of his term, ISRAEL APPARENTLY DIDN’T LIKE WHERE TRUMP WAS HEADED WITH HIS DEAL-MAKING, and so decides to just kick off a war with Iran to force Trump’s hand. And here we are.
Nobody will ever convince me that Trump’s #1 priority wasn’t to make some sort of deal with Iran. And if you think something that complex… involving concessions, commitments, and everything else from EVERY interested party… should only take max five months, then maybe you don’t have as much faith in Donald Trump as you think you have.

Update(1125ET): Iranian state media sources are reporting that Iran is likely to attack US military facilities in the Mideast region ‘in the coming hours’.

The big unknown is whether Iran believes President Trump is in charge or not. Right now, it looks like he is BiBi’s proxy and that is not good. I agree the chance for an escalation spiral is there; however, I think Secretary Hedgeseth warned Iran yesterday morning during his briefing after the bombings that things are different. He said, and I’m paraphrasing, that if Iran touches any U.S. military installations or personnel (and US citizens) the U.S. will response with it’s full might, this is not like past administrations.
As a Veteran of about 13 years, that was music to my ears. I started in 1996 and ended in 2008. I served in several deployments to the ME. I swear on my life that if the ROEs were different these escapades would have been over in days. And most importantly, we would have less dead sons and daughters and less disabled Veterans.
I don’t think there will be an escalation spiral per se, rather, if Iran does anything, I think for the first time since WW2, the U.S. will use it’s military might and strength, without even putting a single solider on the ground, to ensure Iran can no longer escalate.
Mr. Hedgeseth didn’t say that in his presser for naught. And, for those of us paying attention, there were no leaks. In fact, a few of the reporters in that presser were annoyed that they were not informed and one was annoyed Iran was not warned about the strikes; no one even knew they were coming…..that’s difference number 1.
Difference number 2 was the precision, effectiveness, and efficiency of the operation.
Those are two major differences now coupled with what Hedgeseth said…..there may be some retaliatory strikes but there will be no escalation….when the U.S. strikes back, I think the world will see our TRUE military might for the first time in their lifetimes.
Remember, as Pete said, the military’s sole job is to be lethal and efficient and he always emphasizes lethal.

The problem isn’t simply Iranian retaliation. The problem is if they basically blow it off and go right back to resuming their activities..
Russia will doubtless tell Iran to settle in for the long grind. Americans don’t do long grinds.
If Iran simply digs in, it puts the ball back in Trump’s court to move to the regime change phase. More US involvement.
Israel has already shifted to that gear, despite little to no evidence the majority of Iranians want that.

Some other country could provide a nuke to Iran and we could never prove it was not of Iranian manufacture. The attack(s) may not result in regime change in Iran but instead may strengthen support for it. Putin is actually a moderate voice within Russia and there are actually the Russian equivalents of Lindsey Graham clamoring for more war. China and Russia will have gained valuable intelligence about the US weapons systems used in these raids.

There is a VERY good possibility that one of the ‘effects’ of the continued attacks from Israel, has depleted Iran’s supply of ballistic missiles. You may have noticed that each day, the onslaught from Iran becomes less and less.
I think imho that I would hope for is for the Iran people to rise up and overthrow the regime. Short of that we must make sure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon. We need to make sure and verify 100% that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon. I think we know for sure if Iran does have a nuclear weapon that the mullahs will definitely use it.
But we are OK with North Korea? Someone was right. We are bombing those who do not have yet a nuclear weapon. Now, the sympathetic countries to Iran with nuclear capabilities will offer them nuclear warheads which will be mounted on Iranian warheads. Are you OK with that? What did we accomplish here? Absolutely nothing. We just aggravated the situation even more and now gave Iranians, again, a rallying cry around the mullahs.

Your post reminded me of a posit I made decades ago that our proxy wars with the Soviet Union loomed large in the largely non-kinetic end of overt Communism there. It took decades and cost countless lives but IMO wore the cabal down.
Being there not long after brought me a surprise, that some citizens missed Communism. My take was they missed the perception of their comfortable, predictable lives.
Reality, to an outsider like me, appeared different but their perception was their perception. My girlfriend at the time, who had been a doctor in the Soviet military, introduced me to that aspect of culture there.

Possibly I misunderstood or am misremembering, but…
I believe Rubio said that Iran has enriched uranium well beyond the level required for civilian electric production, but still below the level required for a nuclear bomb. The point of the bombing was not to destroy the enriched uranium, but to destroy the centrifuges, thus making it impossible to further enrich.
This BTW, was essentially what Israel accomplished nearly 20 years ago via the Stuxnet virus. Simply destroying the centrifuges set them back a decade or more.
