Or at least they remain available for developing and essential rapprochement. As far as sanctions on Russia re concerned, I don’t think Congress/the deep state will allow those to be lifted. Currently Congress wants to pass a bill placing a 500% tariff on any country which takes Russian energy. That would mean nearly all of our major trading partners. China on the other hand uses North Korea as a nuclear proxy and if you can do it with one you’ll do it with others. Which btw we have done the same with some of our allies. China imported 11.1 million barrels of oil per day in 2024. It is the world’s largest oil importing country by far. Iran exports an estimated 1.8 million barrels per day of oil, most if not all of that oil goes to China’s independent (teapot) refinery sector.
If that oil gets knocked offline, oil prices will rise everywhere in the world, not just in China. More to the point, China will be able to continue importing oil from Russia, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle East producers, just at higher prices, which would inflict an unwanted strain on China’s export-dependent economy.
China has not lost Iran, at least not yet. Iran has not surrendered. Its government has not fallen. The issue of Iran’s fate has yet to be decided. All of which means Gordon Chang is ahead of the curve, perhaps too far ahead of it.
What the current crisis demonstrates is that China cannot offset the awesome combination of U.S. and Israeli military power in the region at this point in time. Beijing could gamble and perhaps announce a nuclear security guarantee for Iran, but that would be a desperate move and very much out of China’s diplomatic character.
What the crisis reveals is that China’s rise to globalism is vulnerable to major, sudden setbacks — that its rise to superpower status in the Middle East is not at all inevitable.
