I am reminded of the time around the Cuban Missile Crisis when an invasion was contemplated. Someone put up a map of Cuba superimposed on the US. People had no idea how big the place was and that was the end of that. Iran is much larger, has mountains up to 18,000′, has been a great power on and off for 2500 years and borders FSRs. Bad idea.
I am Israeli. I understand that there is some MAGA resistance about taking out the Irani nuclear sites militarily.
Let me explain a few things:
1. A couple of the sites are dug in very deep. At Nantaz it is about 260-328 feet under. In Fordow it’s also almost the same. Overall there are some 12 locations related to their program.
2. The Supreme Leader of Iran is dead serious about annihilating Israel. In fact a few days ago while Mr. Witkoff just started the negotiations he posted “the reasons why the Zionists (the way he always calls Israel) must be destroyed”.
The last two times that we ignored those who call to wipe us out we got the Holocaust and 10/7.
3. In order to be able to reach the centrifuges so deep underground it requires only the GBU -57 bunker buster bomb that can get 200 feet into the ground and a few would get the job done. All US Administrations refused to sell it to Israel. It also requires a
B type bomber that is large enough to carry it (it’s 3,000 lb) or a large airplane. So it’s not likely that Israel can get the job done from the air. It can be done with Special Forces on the ground or if Israel uses about 80-100 other bunker buster bombs that it does have. A very complicated operation at such a distance from Israel.
4. The Leadership of Iran and those who support them are calling Israel the “The small Satan” and the US “The Big Satan”. So while Iranian nuclear weapons are for sure a direct and immediate existential threat to small Israel, the US is also perceived as an enemy. If you think that some negotiations or change of policy will make you a friend you don’t understand why they call you “The great Satan”. You oppose their jihadi goal of making an Islamic world and you represent Western Culture that is despised.
I am not saying that you must attack them but most Westerners don’t understand Jihadi mentality and think it’s something that can be restrained by economic means and negotiations.
5. I understand why some in the US oppose a US operation and I am not intending to start a debate about it, Reagan also opposed the Israeli strike on the Iraqi nuclear reactor and the US condemned it . But, the main problem in what I see from this leaked US Intel is that the US can’t be trusted with Confidential Intelligence. The details of the Israeli plans leaked to The NY Times. The original plan according to them included a massive Special Forces invasion into the nuclear sites similar to what Israel did in Syria this January in order to destroy a massive underground Iranian Ballistic Missile manufacturing facility. According to The NY Times this plan was not ready and would only be ready by October so Israel wanted to use the Air Force to do it this May with some US help. The nature and length of this attack also leaked. This brings to mind a year ago when US Intel leaked the specifics of an Israeli retaliatory attack on Iran after they sent some 300 missiles and drones at Israel. Someone is in jail for this leak by now.
6. Trump did say more than once (before he got elected) that he thinks that Israel should target the nuclear sites. Trump understood why. The reliability of The NY Times is questionable and it is known to be a CIA tool. The information of this leak is also in question.
7. Please don’t respond if you’re a hater of Israel. I have no intention of engaging the typical antisemite comments blaming Israel for whatever and denying its right to exist. Thanks and Shalom.
Iran will never agree to dismantle their nuclear sites in negotiations. They are known master negotiators and have already made Mr Witkoff look like a fool when they refused to see him directly most of the “meeting” . I am for peace. Killing and bombing and destruction have not brought about peace, only instability and chaos – and ever greater efforts to kill more and destroy more.
I can assure you that I am more for peace than you. Have you ever had your father leave home and go to war when you were a child? Have you ever took a part in a war yourself? I went to schools on Long Island where many of my Jewish friends lost all their aunts, uncles and grandparents. Thanks to God for President Trump ‘s having the wisdom to seek peace first with Iran and Russia. To do so to me highlights a broader and more sophisticated approach to these wars. Others here have commented on the wider strategy of Trump’s global reset. Finding ways to offset the deep state (intelligence) and Globalist forces is no easy task. Whether by economic means (tariffs), funding reductions (DOGE), bilateral discussions using point person envoys, President Trump is creating a change in how America does business and leading to new world structures between nations that are coming out of a different part of the alluded to “kitchen”. I’m thankful for that.
What I most appreciate about CTH is the reasoned debate put forth by its readers. Especially Sundance’s analysis. The ranging discussion around Iran and Israel today is a case in point and would likely never make it into an Ivy lecture hall.
When you go to Israeli sources, they mirror the NYT article. However, the difference is as told. Is that the IDF planned an October mission involving IAF spearheading key target air raids and commando raids with the USA providing the heavy lift of ground support air command to dominate the skies and provide ground support to areas where commandos siege control of Iranian nuclear assets.
