Starmer knows that the Russian Red Line against European forces in Ukraine under any circumstances is about as bright as it can be.
By offering to cross this Red Line, Starmer is giving President Putin strong incentive to keep the war going. He also is setting up President Trump to re-escalate U.S. support for Ukraine because Putin won’t be reasonable.
Same for Macron and France.
Even Erdogan and Turkey have started playing this game.
I think they all know how easy it would be to escalate something if US troops were put there, and someone decided to shoot a missile at a company of soldiers killing many, and blaming the Russians.
I think President Trump knows the same thing.
Trump is smart enough to avoid a Lebanon, I hope.
I could have been clearer. It’s about convincing Trump to back an outcome — European troops (not American troops) in Ukraine after the fighting stops. It’s about getting him to do this now, well before actual negotiations over Ukraine start.
This increases Putin’s resistance to a deal because any NATO troops in Ukraine would cross Russia’s Red Line.
So, in this scenario, the talks go nowhere, Trump gets frustrated, the Europeans say: see we told you so, Putin is being unreasonable as always, so why don’t you ramp up U.S. support for Ukraine again to, you know, properly exercise your leverage.
That’s what I see Starmer and Macron doing. They are playing pysch games to increase the difficulty setting on fruitful negotiations. That’s it.
And to avoid another Vietnam. American troops were sent there to “help” the damn French. Then France left and we got stuck with it. No More!!
I would advise our President to not go to the UK.

President Trump most value trait is his willingness to engage even the most vile people, directly, look them in the eye, shake their hands even and meanwhile hold a position of leverage that he can use to broker a favorable deal. And it’s not cheating either. He’s just the bigger man, with bigger plans. His deals (as we are about to find out with Russia and Ukraine) almost always satisfy Nash game theory in practice. Everyone involved comes out as beneficiaries, rather than a zero sum game.
this is how he has been using tariffs for instance. He will ultimately win and it actually helps Canada and Mexico. It’s not obvious to those who have not read his book or followed his marvelous deals. I recommend both.

It’s not obvious now, but it’s not merely savings and a step back away from the brink of total economic collapse from the obvious national debt crisis, but it is also going to be used as a lever to get Congress, and many states to start cooperating, which is ultimately in their own best interests…politically, financially, and rationally.
his “hammer” is what makes President Trump effective. It looks like chaos, and that is somewhat the purpose and design …to put legacy powers off balance and in uncertainty. And once the weight of the threats, some actually realized, he draws them back and makes deals.

My entire perception re UK Royalty changed recently when I watched a youtube thing illustrating how shocked the Brits were when they began to understand how literally BIG the United States is, and how many of the states are larger than all of the UK.
