Get ready for a key geopolitical battle; the fight to end the Marshall Plan.
Since the end of World War II, the USA has permitted a system of one-way trade rules that allowed Europe to rebuild on the backs of the American economy. A series of trade tariffs against U.S. goods was imposed to raise funds for the reconstruction. Those tariffs never ended; the Marshall Plan continues through today.
Additionally, as a measure to allow the EU to focus internally, the USA provided most of the national security protection for the entire region and the American taxpayer funded U.S. military operations throughout Europe so the EU could spend defense money on their rebuilding. Again, that never really ended; and the USA maintains the largest majority of NATO military spending.
President Trump has stated his intention to reset both dynamics. To lower the USA footprint within NATO, demand every NATO member meet its financial obligations, and to reset the trade and tariff system to create equity and reciprocity; thereby effectively ending the Marshall Plan.
The aggregate European Union does not like this Trump trade agenda, nor are they willing to spend more on their own defense. Today, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a press briefing where she spoke about the looming negotiations with President Trump, and stated the EU will never permit financial, economic or military equity. The EU will fight any effort to stop the Marshall Plan. WATCH:

Look at the geography of the world – the globe. There is no point of needed conflict between Russia and the US. Russia borders Islam with the mullahs of Iran, the aggressive attitude of Turkey, and its long central southern border is exposed along the line.

When history is pondered, there has been no substantial bloodletting between Russia and ourselves. There is no need for one now. Western Europe have not been a reliable friends, but rather parasites.

Work out a deal with Putin to stop US funding and launch a JOINT investigation into the 2014 US-led coup and the 2022 war. Also Nordstream. Also Moscow opera attack. Also use of US weapons to attack Russian territory.
Russia isn’t Europe. The US isn’t Europe.
Maybe no more high USA officals with PERSONAL anti-Russia resentments and PRIVATE globalist elites economic interest over Russia natural resour es.
It’s going to take major time and effort, but PDJT can at least repair some of the damage in bilateral relations and help bring Russia in from the Cold, helping to reintegrate it into European commerce and economic life. Better to restore Russia’s stake than leave it without anything to lose. Easier said than done, of course.
Nevertheless, a solid, durable alliance with Russia — if it is possible — would join the world’s chief global maritime and aerospace power with the world’s strongest land power. Together a functional Russo-American alignment could help generate a durable degree of stability in the Northern Hemisphere and perhaps elsewhere.
Whether PDJT can pull off an alliance with Russia is uncertain. My guess is that the best he can do is set the foundation and hope that JD Vance gets elected to finish the job. That’s a broad-brush take, and as we all know, the proverbial devil is always lurking in the details.
The Presidents respect each other – that’s most of it done right there.

They are, or ought to be, just one of our neighbors. They should be a nation we have normal, cordial relations with, enjoy mutual trade and exchange with.

We need Christian allies. Desperately.

I think at some point the phrase/term, Marshall Plan, will have to be put into the larger conversation. Even though not 10% of people even know what it is, at least putting it into the conversation may nudge some curious folks.

Ultimately I would like to see our country reduce our military budget. We spend about what China and Russia spend combined. We have 800 bases all over the world. Why do we need 11 aircraft carrier strike groups? We waste money, lots of it. Europe takes advantage of that. Our military is an out of control monster.

President Trump never forgets to mention that we need to have peace through strength. That leads me to be a bit pessimistic about the possibility of ever reigning in this military blob that dominates our spending. I console myself that PT has to say that, that he has to be restrained, or the blow-back would be huge.
I’m hoping, however, that he can use this NATO leverage, to start the process of having a responsible and reasonable and cost effective defense force. I hope and want Europe to dig in it’s heels to get this process rolling. Give us a reason. Fingers crossed.
I completely agree. but it’s not the only priority. fine tuning our military does mean we have to spend more energy producing weapons and defense systems and offensive capabilities that continue to alert any usurpers that there is no gain and only pain should they try the impossible. As well, we need to focus on the war fighting capability of readiness too. Ukraine is giving us some non trivial data to address what works and what to cut out of the budget.

I think large aircraft carriers are the 21st Century’s version of the 20th Century battleship. I also have to wonder if battleships would be a platform that could absorb much more punishment by drones and still be effective? I have also wondered if 16 inch guns could be utilized as rail guns?
Battleships are a thing of the past. The Reagan Administration brought the USS Missouri out of mothballs, but the beast required a huge crew and didn’t really add much to the surface navy. That said, I think China is making a major mistake by building a large surface navy. Drones, long-range strike systems, and so on one make anything on the surface – land or water – supremely vulnerable to getting hit.
The Biden Administration screwed up badly in innumerable ways, but its Replicator Initiative — a crash effort to field an operational interlinked system of undersea, surface, and aerial drones — is expected to be online in August. The purpose is to field thousands of drones capable of hammering China’s A2/AD capabilities and surface vessels should Beijing try to retake Taiwan by force or otherwise attack the U.S. and its Asian allies for whatever reason.
