UPDATE: We will continue bumping this thread to keep the communication lines available.
...”I live in the Western part of the US; reading these comments is like listening in on a (telephone) party line. This is the first I’ve heard firsthand live reports from the people directly affected. For the first time there is no canned, approved spoon fed mis-information delivered by the faceless and unaffected paid to be there.”….
Which is exactly the reason we keep this thread going!
As the areas in Eastern Tennessee, Western North Carolina and the Western gulf coast of Florida continue recovery operations from Hurricanes Helene and Milton, our thoughts are with those who are still impacted and dealing with the long-term recovery process.
If you have stability and the ability to communicate, we are wondering how you guys are doing.

Working with several ground groups, we have sent toolboxes and resources into the area for the arduous tasks that remain. There are many who feel overwhelmed; just know our thoughts and deepest prayers remain with you. It will get a little better every day.
Resourceful teams (mostly electrical restoration experts) who learned quickly after they helped the Puerto Rico Mountain areas in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria are doing amazing work reaching some of the more isolated areas. These are good friends with a git-r-done approach.
Eastern Tennessee power has mostly returned; however, approximately 23,500 of the 1.5 million customers that lost power, just in the Western North Carolina area still lack electricity as of today, according to Poweroutage.us. Additionally, there are still about 365,000 Floridians without power.
The power restoration in the dense mountain forests of WNC is slow going, some roads and bridges are completely washed away. According to the Associated Press report, “The crews aren’t doing what they typically do, which is a repair effort. They’re rebuilding from the ground up,” said Kristie Aldridge, vice president of communications at North Carolina Electric Cooperatives {link}.
There are widespread rumors and disparate reports of the overall death toll, at last count was well over 200. Anecdotal reports from people in the WNC region put the death toll much higher but are difficult to confirm. We do not want to spread rumors, yet we simultaneously accept this close to the election there is an unfortunate incentive for both federal and state emergency management officials to keep the death toll numbers hidden.
The bottom line is a concern for everyone in the impact areas. Therefore, ground reports are the most valuable. How are y’all doing?
Dear God of grace and strength, in the midst of uncertainty, fear and change we turn to You for stability and strength. Please grant us the wisdom and fortitude to navigate the unknown, the courage to face challenges, and the faith to trust Your divine plan.
Heavenly Father, let Your unwavering presence be our anchor in the aftermath of these storms. Grant us the resilience to face the challenges of recovery with grace and hearts filled with purpose. May we continue to find, patience, stability and fellowship in Your eternal love.
Thank You for guiding us through these uncertain times. In Jesus blessed and loving name we pray. ~ Amen.

Appalachian people live hard, so their humor and a positive spirit is their sustenance.
These folks, strong in character, perseverance, and so much more, motivate me to become a better person.
I trust that Franklin Graham’s “Samaritan’s Purse” remains the best charity to support in NC? Last weekend, churches in my diocese took up a 2nd collection for Helene relief (through Catholic Charities); I don’t need my donation going to “migrants” far from WNC. God bless/protect.
Anchor Ridge also has an online presence as well as a large collection and distribution center covering 8 counties. They have an Amazon wishlist and it is shipped directly to them.
When I last checked Samaritan’s Purse, they were no longer taking in kind donations for WNC (all that PDJT gave and raised went to them), but were still asking for all the volunteers they could get.
The best places to donate are the local churches across the areas of Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. If you want an individual organization, my suggestion would be Mountain Mule Packers due to their getting to the people nobody else does.
MOUNTAIN MULE PACKERS
PO BOX 653 MOUNT ULLA, NC775 GRAMPIAN RD #653 MOUNT ULLA, [email protected]@mountainmulepackers.com
I’m in the Flood Zone, and I couldn’t agree more. Do NOT donate to Red Cross…the money will go to their NEW fleet of vehicles (seen them with my OWN eyes).
Mountain Mule Packers closed up shop and went home. They have made it passable for 4 wheelers to get into they places they were going.
I was wondering about them. Thank you for this update. Have been trying to keep up with them. The videos of their mule teams are truly amazing. I hope they raised enough money to support their efforts. I tried to help.
I share your skepticism of Catholic Charities diverting the money raised from Americans in need to illegal immigrants.
Must be where I get the urge to attempt humor at unlikely intervals.
Another bridge that was built by locals to provide access for their neighbors when nobody else would using what they had at hand. Ingenuity combined with passion and love for ones neighbors can accomplish amazing things.
Spruce Pine is one of the areas in need + there is a good tip about helping to maintain body heat and blocking wind.

Also Spruce Pine – place to get shelter.
For the people in Spruce Pine, North Carolina…if you can see this, you have a place to go. They allow you to stay as long as you need and you can bring your pets.
Please share this out.
Kindly cautionary note: just tried three times to donate on the church’s website. Got an “error” message each time. Will check CC to see if charges went through. Otherwise, will call them (closed until Sunday…)
Internet in the area remains spotty at best.
Thank you. And just got a “404” message on the Mountain Mule site. Will keep trying. So appreciate your continuing posts and Sundance’s willingness to continue bumping this thread.
May be a typo in your entry – just tried it and connected right up.

Regarding maintaining body heat and blocking wind, YES to trash bags. When riding horses in the back country we would each carry a couple of 55 gal construction trash bags in our packs. Good for so many things in an emergency.
Along with some military grade space blankets to wear under the plastic.
I get a bunch of Chinese text when I click the link. So, the point is to wear the garbage bag to insult body heat and block wind? Anything special one needs to do?
You using a TOR connection perchance?
Here’s a twitter link to the post:
And here is the youtube video…
Thanks! That one opened.
Yes – plastic will block wind and hold body heat in – plus blocks moisture. The blog talks about putting a slit in it to breath through – which is needed if walking with it – but it’s better to not have one so your completely enclosed and your head is through the natural opening (with it wrapped around your neck/partial head).
Here is a survival blog entry with a description – note the slit for the face.
https://survivalcommonsense.com/make-trash-bag-survival-shelter/
The bag is something you might have around in an emergency. A bag and a metalized mylar blanket (space blanket) is even better. Keep both in the glove box of my transportation, just in case…
Thanks!

Yet another example of FEMA seizing donated supplies from Church orgs in North Carolina
This time in Avery County
It is unconstitutional for the gov’t to seize your property without due process
Plus, these local churches know best on who needs the food & diapers
Not FEMA!
Where is the Sheriff?
EXACTLY!!! Where the hell is the Sheriff??!!!
Local here. I just spoke with the Avery County FM/EM Coordinator. He says the original poster is not local and appears to not understand the system or is working outside the system. All donated items are available to anyone in need.
The original poster had just driven a semi full of supplies to a church and talked DIRECTLY with the church members. There is ZERO – repeat ZERO reason for ANY government agency to interfere with churches or any other group that is aiding individuals. Full stop.
If you support the government controlling everything and interfering, then you are as much of a problem as they are. Anyone trying to take donations or supplies from any church or group that is directly helping people will be considered a thief at best…
Further, the Calhoun’s are also local to their area.
Maybe I wasn’t clear. Someone whether the original poster or someone claiming to represent local EM is working outside system. The local incident commander has no knowledge of the alleged actions. There are no programs or plans as described and it will be looked into. It is good to draw attention to a potential problem but to throw such rhetoric around without proof or investigation is irresponsible and is not needed. If you know the guy have him contact the local FM.
NO, you weren’t and still aren’t – but it appears that you are NOW saying that the person “working outside the system” that you are referring to is the FEMA person(s) (or people who said they were FEMA). If that’s the case, it puts an entirely different context to your post.
Either way – I stand by what I said about interference and theft.
one of the issues in today’s society is that Americans used to help one another and the world
without waiting for government. Now, many seem to say, where is FEMA, where is
the government? Americans need to realize what is going on.
Government is interfering with the American spirit private help. American
private assistance is on the rise since we know we cannot trust our government
which is Marxist and in of itself wants to increase government interference in our lives.
That is unacceptable.
many videos attest to this
Thank you. The hatred for the fedgov runs deep. They had better be careful. Pretty easy to have an “accident” in all that mess.
It’s only the restraint of GOD-FEARING PEOPLE that provides them any measure of safety in these days.
I learned towing a trailer I had to say it was gift’s rather than supplies. Gifts they ignored or can’t grab. I was told that several times.
Follow FEMA. Are they redistributing at the border?
They must not be on FEMA’s ‘preferred vendor’ list.

It is driving me crazy that I am not seeing major companies/corporations donating. Maybe I am missing them, dunno. I look for articles and stories every day. Where are the RV manufacture people? The Tiny House people? The pre-fab home people? The double wide people?
How much money are places like Costco, Wal-Mart, Kroger etc. making off civilians spending their own money? Have they given to the hurricane survivors?
Hmmmm….
I tried doing a search on Corporate Donations, but corporate America did not come up in the search results.
However, it looks like some interesting articles are here:

Civilians and local non-profits.
Tractor Supply donated supplies. Lots of items including feed for large and small animals.
Indeed they did…within days Corporate sent supplies for horses, cows, goats etc. I called my local store
because individual folks were asking where they could send stuff and I knew of the effort over at Tryon International Horsepark. The young clerk literally started to cry thanking me for the info. In turn the employees told every customer!
This is the way. Tractor Supply was one of the first to respond. They should get credit where credit is due. I’m going to check with my local TS to see if there are ongoing relief efforts. Thanks for the info.
My TS gave me 75% off for a ton of dog treats. It made me happy.
Who owns Lodge Cookware again? Where the heck are the Yurt building hippies?
All of those big box stores you mentioned did a lot of business with folks fleeing and hunkering down during the Hurricanes.
I realize their profit margins are slim because of Bidenflation but they could do more.
Lodge is a Tennessee company.
I bought a fairly large number of cast iron skillets for distribution to the families cooking over campfires in our area.
Lodge gave a 15% discount
Good to know and better than nothing. But not enough.
FYI – Walmart was one of the first to send semi-trailers filled with supplies to the area. There have been others as well – like Husqvarna who donated pallets of gas chain saws and cold weather wear that Greg Biffle delivered, along with gas cans and fuel.
No, there haven’t been near as many as one would like to see – but there have definitely been more than you have apparently seen.
I have not seen very many at all. Any other disaster it would be non-stop w/ads and local media, and celebrities. A few local organizations, but mostly it has been all civilian related donations and getting supplies there.
Media is an entirely different creature… 😉

92 individuals are known to still be missing
Utter bullocks by MSM again. In just the spreadsheet being used on the net to try to track people down of friends and family there were over 770 still KNOWN and REPORTED missing last night (there’s a post in this thread with the link to it).
Saw a good old boy local trucker today talking about a man who was buried in the mud, trucker was trying to pull him out, victim said to just leave him there … His house, wife, and child had all been washed away by a wall of water before it got to him. He had nothing to live for anymore.
CBS and Norah O’Donnell. She doesn’t care. Sure, at least it is some news so that the devastation is not completely off the news cycle grid. But of course have to put Cooper in there with announcement of a “task force” like he has actually been a competent gov thru all of this. Not.
HUNDREDS are still missing and unaccounted for. In EACH county affected.

God bless this woman and her family.
If private sector could organize a program to help rebuild for those who have lost everything, that would be the best solution in my opinion. Brainstorm ideas. Even using an idea of every county in every red state adopting a family to rebuild would be so much better than what, if anything, the inept federal government will attempt to do for these people. Small businesses are in trouble too and those SBA loans can be a catch 22. We can hope and pray that private sector ingenouity will outperform the unsympathetic and often hate-filled bureaucracy. My opinion.

I am totally disgusted with this govt.
I can’t say what I’d like to.
It’s far beyond disgust – and I won’t say what comes to mind every day…
No need. Understood.
Hal Turner has never been credible, & Quayle is marginal.
Huh….Hal worked for the FBI for 15 yrs in counter terrorism until he was railroaded by Obummer regime over an OP-ED he wrote and jailed after 3 trials…. he is EXTREMELY credible and his show is broadcast to over 100 countries. Me think thou dost protest too much about that which thou dost not understand….
He’s a govt whistleblower by today’s standards and puts out intelligence info he receives from his former international colleagues that are still in the biz. The gov is discrediting those that speak truth or expose them…. Hal has his finger on the pulse.
Steve Q is in the same position as a whistleblower. Truthers are frowned upon, but I love ’em.
This is what I want to know
What was the average rainfall from Helene when it made landfall in Florida?
What was the average rainfall total over Western NC and Eastern TN?
Compare and contrast..and then try to explain how a hurricane drops MORE rainfall the further inland it goes.
????
It has to do with the mountains. It’s called the orographic effect. When air rises (to go over the mountains), it cools and the water vapor condenses. This causes increased rainfall on the side of the mountain facing the oncoming front.
Normal weather patterns over the Appalachians are from the west or northwest. Helene came from the south.
Hmmm. Did the weather service know about the orographic effect and
model it and warn about a 1 in 1,000 year flood?
They certainly had plenty of lead time..models were showing the trajectory of the storm days in advance.
Why was there so much moisture remaining in the storm that far inland?
I was born and raised on the gulf coast. Have experienced many many hurricanes. Many of them come up from the gulf and go inland from the gulf coast north through Georgia and the Carolinas
Never has this occurred before.
Something is not right.
Belle is correct about rainfall, systems, and mountains – but the government in fact knew and a major flooding event was known 2 days in advance.
https://archive.is/hkExY
No one will convince me this was not an intentional act to devastate an area to sway an election.
Many people believe the same…they are IGNORED by the ‘mockingbird media’.
And to steal the land for lucrative mining.
In Erwin, TN…we got NO EVACUTION order or advice…no knock on the door, no calls from neighbors, NOTHING.
Go to: https://www.cocorahs.org/ and on the top menu bar choose maps. It will open an interactive map page and you can zoom in to North Carolina. The default map is the current day but you can change the map date to Sept 29 or 30th and see the rain totals for each reporting observer. We also had significant rain on Sept 25th as the Hurricane began to interact with an upper level low pressure area in the central USA. The interaction is called The Fujiwhara effect. My city Saluda NC is on the south facing summit. I reported 23.41 inches of rain total from Sept 25th thru Sept 29th. My station is NC-PK-6.
It rained for 2 days before Helene arrived. Two weather systems over the mountains caused the disaster. It wasn’t just the rain from the hurricane.
SPOT ON!!!
I found this geologists videos very helpful in understanding why this event was so catastrophic for the region. Mark Honeycutt WNC resident also did a video exploring an area to show what the geologist stated.
Retired Magistrate here: My cousin went to Walmart at 6:00 A.M. and there was already a small line. All the people in line, including my cousin, rushed back to where eggs, bacon, milk and other staples were. My cousin was able to purchase 12 days worth of food.
When he left, the Walmart parking lot was jammed with people were trying to find a place to park. He was so happy to get food. All is good for him now, water back on, power, food and hopefully the men will come and take out the old moldy carpet so his floor can dry out before new carpet is laid.
That’s great! So glad he is doing well.
They are called Welch piles” named for the incompetent Mayor of St Petersburg Florida who failed to clear debris after Hurricane Helene’s record surge compounded by poor storm water management. Public works administrators did not know/anticipate/act to open storm sewer pipes and locks draining major lakes, like Lake Maggiore and smaller retention pond like lakes resulting in street flooding and homes flooding. Unforced errors of an incompetent rubber stamping county commissioner who was selected by local rag’s editorial board to be the City’s first black mayor-no actual skills necessary-just skin color. Karma is interesting though. Huge crane smashed Rag’s Tampa Bay Times’ historic building. Officer suggested building may never be occupied again.
Black Democrats can’t govern, and other poorly educated blacks vote them into office. Tragedy.
So Tampa has a rabid white lesbian mayor and St. Pete has a typical black democrat mayor. So special.
There is a video out there where CBP is touting their work with FEMA. In the video it shows a line of fifteen men passing one log to one another. The replies from people to the video were brutal and deservingly so.
Blanche, here ya go:
No, just no. How freaking insane are these people? Somewhere in the massive number of videos I have watched there was one guy, a volunteer, carrying essentially half a tree by himself. He looked like an entire SEAL team carrying the log but solo.
Simply embarrassing.
That must go viral.
Let’s make it so.

Your posts are on fire today!
Just returned from Ashe County in NC. First, I keep hearing or reading people say you can’t cross the mountains from TN to NC. You can but it’s secondary roads.
This area lost lots of trees which created dams in the stream beds so flooding and mud everywhere.
Roads are pretty much clear and ready for visitors.
Rebuilding is beginning yet an elderly couple was found alive yesterday in a hollow. Lots of mostly local volunteers are working hard. They had plenty of things for us to do and they were endless in their gratitude. Everyone has a harrowing story.
Schools start in a week and a half. I was all over the county and saw 2 female FEMA workers. One of which almost caused a traffic crash by not getting completely off the road with a curve and a hill. I saw 5 National Guard guys walking around the town- aimlessly. Nice but not useful- there are still missing people and people living in campers and buildings in town with water and mud but whatever. I saw Samaritan Purse volunteers working on multiple projects for families. Anchor Ridge seems to be a clearinghouse for logistics and has a huge distribution center in a neighboring county that is responsible for 8 of the 37 counties with disaster designation. Some volunteers like us from out of state. I volunteered here because this is home for me. I had extended family still there and thought by knowing the area, I could be helpful without being in the way. Further south, in Spruce Pine and Swannoa closer to Asheville- there was a lot of talk about bodies still being recovered. I think the fatality numbers are going to be significant. All I can think is Biden Harris don’t want the numbers out there before the election because I heard very specific numbers from several communities. These numbers were reported daily – so the locals know even if the government doesn’t.
Thank you for first-hand report.
Thank you for going and for telling us your experience.
I have a difficult time believing the local Water Management District “Authorities” when they tell us river flooding has “crested” and evacuees can return to survey damages.
Every morning I walk down to the canal from my high spot the “No Wake Idle Speed” sign normally 10 ft out of the water is submerged another 10 inches. I really pray we do not get another system.

It rarely gets mentioned but even though a lot of people are getting their electricity back they are still without water. Lots of different reasons but it’s a heavy burden .
Yes. Here is just one example:
https://www.wunc.org/environment/2024-10-17/mitchell-county-water-shortages-wastewater-helene
Over 2 weeks AFTER the disaster and just now they are WASTING 10s of millions of dollars (all told over multiple camps more than a $100 million easy) to build FEMA camps to later house and support the “rescuers” that FEMA will bring in at that time. Note these are NOT camps to house and feed the people of the disaster. Nope – for the “rescuers” that will show up 3 or 4 weeks AFTER the disaster, along with “mental health professionals” for the “rescuers” – again, not for the people that might need it.
Think of how many tents, tiny homes, winter parkas and clothes, generators, heaters, chain saws, etc and how much gasoline, food, and propane all of that money could buy + all of the helicopter flights and UTVs to transport those supplies deep into the mountains.
We really do not hate and loath the current administration and government enough – including the morons in FEMA.

It is like watching a movie. The US Military can set entire tent cities w/heat, A/C, and showers in like zero time, much like this so called responder camp, but nothing for the survivors?
It is always about the vendors and the contracts, always.
Harrison that was an awesome interview from Vandersteel. So we learned that “responders” get accommodations that are at this point better than most of the locals have and will have for a long time. Nothing but the best for our government workers!

This copter flight gives the unaware an idea of the vast areas being serviced by mule, goat, UTV, side-by-sides, helicopters, foot, and truck. You can also see how the water and mud came pouring down through the valleys, wiping out all in its path – often including roads as well.

Further down 75-those mini pine forests—trees uprooted, snapped in half, some many stripped of their needles, mobile & RV parks hard to tell but one permanent building missing half the shingles. Trees looked that way all the way to I 10 junction in FL. FL had some sad looking palm trees w/ drooping palm fronds at the border-they were hard at work when I went by.

Please remember to add sw Virginia in your prayers . Damascus , Va is a small tourist town that depends on the Creeper Trail – a 35 mile formerly abandoned railroad line turned into a bike trail . It starts at the top of Mt. Rogers and is mostly downhill through the woods and crosses many rivers and streams all the way to Abingdon . Damascus ( D ) is midway along the ride and is downhill .
There is the problem : from Mt. Rogers to Damascus is 17 miles and is governed by the National Park Service . Also , it is the most popular of the two sections . It has about 25 bridges in this section – 19 of which were washed out . The section from D to Abingdon is owned by those two towns .
The Forest Service will require all types of environment studies in order to rebuild – time the town of Damascus does not have .
Mike, are the Damascus people getting help? Is there an organized relief effort to get supplies to them? Thank you for reminding us about SW Virginia. Prayers coming . . .
Youngkin and JD went there and brought attention to the area. A group from my area sent down a ton of stuff. A part of GA got hit hard and no one talks about them either.
Missed the news about Youngkin and JD. Thx for update. What part of Georgia? Are they getting help?
I am thinking about going to Damascus. I listen to Born in the Mountains every Sunday, Ivy talks each week about Damascus and Taylor Valley.
My life has gotten so much better since I finally got the internet yesterday. I actually watched the Trump rally last night.
My town, Weaverville,,is doing really quite well at this point. Water electricity and now internet to almost everyone.
I don’t actually live in the town but on the outskirts and a friend of mine who lives further down finally got her internet last night and she said she was just about ready to cry when she finally got it.
. I’m so happy for her as she went for a much longer period of time without water or electricity and the small Bridge that the trucks had to cover was not crossable for a while.
I got a big long text from Spectrum today apologizing for being such jerks and not getting out and helping us sooner.
There was absolutely no communication and it took 2 weeks for them to realize that there had been a hurricane in one of their areas and a mass number if not all of their customers were without internet.
Spruce Pine is not that far from me and there is another town Barnardsville that is in really bad shape. Other towns such as Marshall are covered with toxic mud and had their entire downtown district wiped out as well as Hot Springs.
I’m going to be able to go back to work on Monday because I have the internet now. I do feel a little shaky and exhausted but I’m going to try to remember how to do my job.
The heroes in Weaverville were the Publix grocery store and the Baptist church on Main Street. Also the power companies are just tremendous. They went where they weren’t supposed to go crossing little unsteady bridges that the neighbors propped up.
And I watched the Trump rally last night and it felt so good.
So glad things are looking up where you are ! Publix seems like a really America first store…I know they banned Bill gates engineered frankenfood Apeel. Shopping there whenever possible.
So glad you are ok! And now back to work, it will give you something to occupy your mind.
God Bless you.
Hal Turner posted this yesterday from a woman in WNC boots on the ground helping in the recovery. 200+ dead is a lie, more like 10k deaths….
