The alarming statistic is really that -post COVID- 31% of Americans still trusts news media. I would surmise that if a similar poll was done on professions, teachers, nurses and healthcare workers would also be at the lower end of the scale.
That said, this really is not a surprise if you have ever interacted at a high level outside the USA. Internationally, thanks in part to the traveling USA press corps who have showcased their ideological attributes to a host of foreign audiences, the entire world now view the USA media apparatus as various shades of something akin to Baghdad Bob.
If you think that a cognitively compromised USA President parading around the world as a blithering fool, while the USA media openly pretended he was functional, does not have some significant impact on global views, you are mistaken. The entire world sees Joe Biden as he is, not as the media pretended him to be.
When it comes to polling, the numbers are nearly always manipulated to receive the desired outcome.
IIRC, it “used to be”, (but I am not so sure it still applies), that the IQ scale ( <Intelligence Quotient scale) was like a “Bell Curve” and that half the worlds population was of an intelligence quotient of less than 100 IQ, which would be the “Average” IQ, and half the worlds population was above 100 IQ.
I do not think that is any longer the case, If it ever was….

by definition the 100 IQ is the average for the population. ie, a 100 IQ can and does change over time.
Interestingly, The average IQ (100) in the US has increased from the 1930-1950’s era upto the recent times, 2000’s. The people that research this and design the tests, and do the adjustments do not understand why.
I also agree with you, it appears the IQ is dropping. I am not sure if it is actually inherent intelligence is dropping or that many people just have lazy thinking. I have seen many examples of the former.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on landline telephones and cellular phones, with interviews conducted in Spanish for respondents who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Landline and cell phone telephone numbers are selected using random digit dial methods. polls like this do not account for the good generally conservative people who are so busy in their lives and just trying to get by that they don’t give much thot to whether something is true or not. I know good salt of the Earth people who think PDJT incited an insurrection and paid hush money to a hooker. They don’t give any time to the truth of the statements because they only happened to see the headline while they were looking for the weather. and when I try to expand on what is going on, they don’t really have time for me either.
