I spent forty years lecturing on the subject of decline and fall at some of the country’s top research universities. I kept hammering at a few simple principles:
1) There is a difference between a country and a nation. Japan is a country; America is a nation. A country has a homogeneous population, language, and culture. A nation is in these respects and more “a melting pot.” The key here is culture. Immigration built America when it was tied to Judaeo-Christian culture; without a shared cultural tradition, nations rapidly perish. Hence …
2) History has not been kind to nations, and it has been especially unkind to countries that have willingly transformed themselves into nations. Think the difference between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. Both declined and fell, but the Republic recovered because Rome at that point was a country. The decline and fall of the Empire was permanent because it had become a nation. It is important to keep in mind that the so-called Germanic invaders were welcomed into the Roman army en masse, becoming citizens in the process. The emperor who presided over Rome’s thousand year celebration was born and raised in what is now Jordan.
Aristotle wrote on this subject at length, in an age when Greeks and Macedonians were flowing out to colonize the successor states carved out of the Persian Empire after its conquest by Alexander the Great. He concluded that the greatest danger awaiting the Greeks was gradually becoming indistinguishable from the indigenous populations whose lands they were expropriating. Down at the village level, over time his fears were fully realized in Ptolemaic Egypt.
3) Countries are especially prone to become nations as a result of what Arnold J. Toynbee called “deracination.” In short, depopulation. Systemic warfare and imperial ambitions are fingers commonly on the scale. How many tens of millions lost their lives in Europe during the two World Wars? You might style this stage one of the Left’s ongoing assault on the family. It continues to this day, yielding demographic change in a very brief span of time that is utterly astonishing for a professional historian to behold. All of these trend lines, already firmly in place in 1975, have continued to eat at the fabric of American society up to the present, and will continue to do so into the future. For example, as we speak women outnumber men in the nation’s universities 2:1, with more top heavy splits in the professional programs. This figure will continue to widen, in an environment where college educated women have been brainwashed to consider men of lesser education inferior and therefore unacceptable as partners (feminist revolution again). It should be obvious where the demographics of this social equation will lead, and what racial group is going to be hammered the hardest.
The transgender movement that you reference is just one more tool in the Left’s toolbox. It is just another divide, creating yet another tribal constituency, making it just that much harder for anyone to generate an effective defense of traditional norms.
Immigration’s role in this is quite simple. Introduce tens of millions of aliens into the country who speak little to no English, have no education or vocational training to make them self-sustaining, and who increasingly come from cultures untouched by the Judaeo-Christian ethic, and you insure that the number of tribes will proliferate. Without a unified culture and language, the life expectancy of a polity is limited, regardless of all other factors.
Lastly, I wish to draw your attention back to Japan and Finland, two countries with birth rates so far below replacement figures that both are effectively dying. Both have outstanding education systems, but it seems increasingly clear that universal education leads to depopulation. Educated people generally plan their families rather than simply take whatever nature gives them, and children are simply one priority among many. The end result is a demographic tragedy unfolding across the whole of the so-called first world, with the exception of Hungary, whose pro-family policies are a beacon of hope.

Perhaps the Finland thing is a bit more complex. Finland had always gotten along well with Russia. In the past, it would have been conceivable for Finland to contact Russia with regard to this issue. However, since joining NATO, Finland now must ‘flex its muscle’ and prove to be a viable NATO member….conversely, Russia would do little to dissuade migrants from going to Finland, now that Finland has made the NATO choice.
