The weird just continues to get more and more weird. According to Fox News, the “object” targeted over Lake Huron was engaged by an F-16, firing a “sidewinder missile to attack the target.” However, the first missile missed the target and the military have no idea where it landed. Yikes.

The Air Force F-16 jet was using Sidewinder missiles to attack the target. “The first Sidewinder heat-seeking missile missed the target,” one official said.
It wasn’t clear where the missile that missed ultimately landed. The second missile took down the target. Each of the missiles costs more than $400,000.
None of the debris from the object has been found in the lake, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Monday. The Defense Department, or DOD, said President Biden, just before 2:42 p.m., directed an F-16 to fire an AIM-9x missile to shoot down an airborne object flying at nearly 20,000 feet over Lake Huron. Unless it’s a hot-air balloon, a balloon won’t emit any heat, so it’s not surprising the heat-seeking Sidewinder would miss. As someone earlier suggested, a WWII fighter with a 50-calibre machine gun could shred the thing easily, whereupon it would float gently down to Earth. But I don’t suppose there’s anyone in today’s trillion-dollar military with the sense to field the right weapon for the job.

Pretty difficult to jam or misdirect a volley of high speed projectiles.
Seems like it would have been less costly to approach and visually confirm the target then use their 20mm Vulcan cannon?

The US military is conducting wide-area surveillance tests across six midwest states using experimental high-altitude balloons, documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reveal.
Up to 25 unmanned solar-powered balloons are being launched from rural South Dakota and drifting 250 miles through an area spanning portions of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri, before concluding in central Illinois.
Travelling in the stratosphere at altitudes of up to 65,000ft, the balloons are intended to “provide a persistent surveillance system to locate and deter narcotic trafficking and homeland security threats”, according to a filing made on behalf of the Sierra Nevada Corporation, an aerospace and defence company.
The balloons are carrying hi-tech radars designed to simultaneously track many individual vehicles day or night, through any kind of weather. The missile had three means of detonation-
1) Proximity to target
2) Impact
3) Timed self-destruct
