Firing missiles like this wildly seems a little inconsistent with their policy not to shoot down the Chinese balloon because of a very slight chance falling debris might hit someone.

I have read that similar events happened in the past with weather balloons that got loose and were headed to the USSR. Using guns didn’t poke enough holes to deflate it fast enough. I defer to someone that is an expert on 20mm rotary cannons and high altitude balloons. I’d also read that they were afraid that missile would pass through the balloon, but there must be something that the sensor can use to detonate, as evidenced in the shoot down near SC.
The US Military might NOT have a fighter jet available, that reach the altitude of the ‘balloons’ in the air. … A reader with experience with US Military aircraft could inform all of us.

The old P51 Mustang (propeller) had a ceiling of 42,000 ft. Armed with six 50 caliber machine guns.
The old Vought F-8 Crusader (jet) had a ceiling of 52,000+ US version. Armed with 4 = 20 mm Colt Cannons. [This jet is called the ‘last of the gunfighters’ on the Internet.

Guns are not safer. M61s fire five to six THOUSAND rounds per minute. That’s 100 rounds a second of 20mm coming out of that thing. Even with only 600 rounds in the magazine that’s a lot of lead hurtling earthward.

The standard warhead for the AIM-9X series air to air missiles is a proximity blast fragmentation payload. Think of it as giant buckshot shotgun shell: 100s of metal rods or large pellets are propelled at the direction of the target by the warheads detonation. Essentially poking many holes in whatever air frame is targeted. In the case of a balloon, rapid deflation would occur, bringing it down pretty quickly.

Bullets are a version of small missiles.
I learned to never, ever, shoot at anything I can’t see and don’t fully know what is behind it. Don’t shoot if the bullet will go through and hit someone in the background, don’t shoot just willy-nilly not knowing where the bullet will go. That empty spot in the woods — whether on your land or not — may not be as empty as anyone knows.
Never, ever shoot up in the air in celebration. That high velocity bullet still needs to come down somewhere and could kill someone.
