Apparently, there is an influx of “unidentified objects”, somewhat similar to surveillance balloons, coming from the Pacific into U.S. and Canadian airspace.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced earlier today a third “unidentified object” was shot down over Canadian airspace in the Yukon territory. The third high altitude object was tracked by the North American Aerospace Command (NORAD) and intercepted by U.S. military F-22 fighters in coordination with the Canadian military.
(CBS News) – An “unidentified object” which “violated “Canadian airspace” was shot down over Canada Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed. The object was shot down by a U.S. military F-22 over the Yukon, Trudeau said.
A U.S. official previously confirmed to CBS News Saturday that the object was detected by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and appeared to be a “high-altitude balloon.”
Trudeau tweeted that “Canadian and U.S. aircraft were scrambled” after he “ordered the take down” of the object by NORAD.
In a statement to CBS News, Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said that the object was detected over Alaska on Friday night, and then monitored by two F-22 fighter jets with the assistance of the Alaska Air National Guard. (read more)

Greenland is considered N.A. but belongs to Denmark. Although the U.S recognizes Greenland’s strategic importance (we have an airbase there), Greenland is not officially a part of the NORAD agreement.
Greenland falls under NATO since Denmark is the responsible authority.
FYI: Thule (pronounced Too-lee) is the base in northern Greenland built in 1951/2. The first fighter aircraft to operate out of Thule (responding to potential incursions from Soviet aircraft coming over the North Pole) were F-80 “Shooting Stars” from Otis AFB, MA. This occurred before Thule officially opened in 1953. I know this because my father was the first to fly an F-80 into Thule. I think Thule now is a Space Force base, but may well still have aircraft deployed there. Another base at Sondre Stromfjord in Greenland was also active. I believe this is now a civilian airport but may still have a contingent of US personnel there.
Yes I understand that NATO covers Greenland but the issue was NORAD. I would think that the NORAD detection system covers any threat to Greenland but the online information about that seemed to be a bit ambiguous. My guess is that because of our bases there it is well covered defensively, but using logic doesn’t seem to be reliable these days.

There are both Canadian and American early warning installations round the north pole. Most people don’t visualize the shorter distances to invade North American air space from that “over the top” route. The question that should be asked is why they let the objects get so far south before taking action. What good are early warning systems if objects are still allowed to pose a risk so far into sovereign air space

I think you are referring to the old SAGE system. My dad was an officer at the SAGE location at Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls, MT back in 1962-63. It was a multi-story, windowless, thick concrete building. There were a number of them across the USA. They would hold an open house once a year. There was a huge screen like the one in Dr. Strangelove. It had a gigantic, two-story, IBM mainframe computer using vacuum tubes. They had an enormous air conditioning system to keep the computer tubes from burning up the computer. They produced massive amounts of heat.
It was the SAGE Complex. Yes sir.
It was underground. Under solid granite. A four story building, on giant assed springs. Self sealing, all the trimmings. Same as you describe.
Giant screen, the threat board they called it.
Buses could drive in and out. Transported the workers up and down the place all day long.
Room for many people. They did tours back in the 70,s and early 80’s.
2 entrances, 1 at the top, 1 at the bottom. (I live 4 blocks from the South Portal/Bottom entrance, facing the hill. The airbase is on top, although its been many years since any Airwings were stationed here. )
