Interesting video capture appears to show the moment the U.S. military hit the Chinese surveillance balloon with some type of detonation.

Trump in office the balloons never fly in the 1st place.
“Some kind of detonation?” The F22 Raptor that shot it down enters/exits the bottom of the screen seconds after the ballon pops during the live feed. I don’t think the missile even detonated. I think it literally flew through it and popped it.
Seems to have come down pretty much in one piece. So much for fears of a large debris field.
Well, two big pieces… If you look carefully at the HD video, you will see the puff of black smoke as the missile hits. This indicates that the warhead detonated. Watch a little longer and you can see glimpses of the main payload falling rapidly out of the sky, so it was definitely separated from the balloon envelope. I doubt that it remained intact during its descent, as it is a lightweight structure never intended to withstand aerodynamic forces that would occur with an uncontrolled fall from 25,000 ft. And once it hit the ocean, most anything left was well broken up.
Finally, you can see the balloon envelope “crumple” when the missile hit, indicating that shrapnel from the warhead effectively shredded the envelope. After that the envelope slowly drifts downward. Most of the “live” video coverage focused on that drifting envelope and completely missed the payload fall after its separation from the balloon.
Did you see before the missile hit I saw smoke coming from the payload it was fried by the Chinese
Congratulations. You just shot down someone else’s weather balloon as though you’d never seen any such thing before. The “course” that it was following was set by high-altitude winds. Just like yours do. A balloon can remain aloft for many months and circumnavigate the planet many times.
The frequencies and data streams used by such devices are public. You could have simply listened to it.

We should have had a civilian competition to bring it down instead we likely spent a few hundred thousand to put on a show of force. If we reall wanted to be impressive, capture it and tow it to Lakehurst.
One possibility may have been to ensure it came down quickly before it got past our nautical territory.
Twenty years ago Canada tried to shoot down an off-course weather balloon and it took 1000 cannon rounds and kept going. I did more digging and it turns out the barrage of fire did get the balloon to come down …eventually. It deflated slowly over many days and covered a great distance in the interim.
