The House is scheduled to begin the effort for the installation of California Representative Kevin McCarthy at 10:00pm ET. It is unknown whether the 14th ballot effort will succeed or exactly how many representatives are still in DC for the activity. The livestream is below:
UPDATE:
- Round 14 fails for McCarthy by one vote. 232 votes cast. McCarthy got 216 – one vote short of majority.
- Representative Mike Rogers (AL) tried to fight Matt Gaetz and had to be restrained. (LINK)
- GOP tried to adjourn. Voice vote failed and failed counting of yeas and nays. House cannot adjourn.
- Republicans now go for round #15

actually it allows at the last moment to change the vote. and if that is not changed, then yes, it drops the 50% rule +1 …think of it as a placeholder but also as a tool to develop a dramatic impact that can the effect of holding all other members in check. And that is exactly what gaetz and others are doing with the present vote.
as some have noted the risk of dropping that threshold is present with this strategy and thus jeffries might win, but under the rules those voting present may change that vote in the end.
I think this is what gaetz and boebert are doing. Placeholder but if there is a real risk that jeffries gets the votes under that threshold, they can change and vote for mccarthy.
but here is the twist: gaetz has stated he WILL vote for jeffries to prevent mccarthy.
I think some of that was just a gambit threat and I really doubt he would risk actually voting for jeffries.
but tonight, there is a definite visceral strangeness in the air. Be prepared for weirdness.

McCarthy was NOT the winner tonight. The House Resistance Freedom Fighters won because through this ordeal they pushed & got (we hope) more transparency & accountability inside the Swamp. That’s a win for the American people, no matter your party affiliation or ideology.

I will just point to history and nancy pelosi leading a sit-in on june 22, 2016 while the house was in session. the democrats ignored the speaker, chanted, sang songs, behaved like 5 year olds. Paul Ryan was speaker. No DC Police or national guard were called in, nobody came in shooting, nobody was arrested, censured or removed from office. nobody claimed that their life was in danger.
