Roy is a politician. Never be surprised by anything they do. This was not his first grandstanding followed by a 180.
I am all in for the holdouts and most proud of Rosendale and have nothing but disgust for how my rep, Zinke played it. However, I have a lot of empathy for Chip Roy and how he handled it from a negotiating standpoint. As a businessman, you never get everything you want in a negotiation and in the case of Chip Roy, he stuck his neck out, held firm and extracted tremendous and much needed rules changes which hopefully will have real impact. He, along with the others, did it from a tiny minority position with blocking powers and pretty much extracted as much as he could. At some point, you have to cut the deal. I have zero trust in McCarthy and enforcement powers and am expecting some future bait and switch on debt ceiling talks and elsewhere. Maybe the holdouts are helping further tighten the terms of the deal but who knows. Maybe the sequencing of holdout changes is a carrot to strengthen these terms. At lease via Chip Roy´s efforts we will come away in a much stronger situation than we were at one week ago. I still view Roy´s efforts as heroic. My problem is with the 200 or so get along go along Republicans who did nothing in that effort. I also wish that KM and some of these others had expended as much energy trying to block the $1.7 trillion omnibus as they have expended on protecting one guy’s job promotion.
I don’t disagree, although I think of Roy more as a pragmatist rather than of a hero.

I was just saying that Roy put himself out there and used the leverage to get a stronger deal on Rules and I respect him for it even if he concluded those talks prematurely…..and maybe they are using the other holdouts to further strengthen. My real. beef is with the 200 Rs who were worthless to obstructionist in obtaining those rules changes.

Nobody should be disappointed. Realistically we were never going to “win”. We only had 20 or 21 votes at best. We can’t elect anyone with only those votes. The best we could hope for was to obstruct and delay and ultimately humiliate Kevin McCarthy, which we did. It has taken the most rounds to elect this RINO scum since the freakin Civil War!
Hopefully, the rebels have obtained something worthwhile for switching their votes. If they get assignments where they can make a difference then great. If they get rule changes that positively effect House procedure then that’s good. We also got to throw a lot of sunlight on just how corrupt these Congresscritters are, especially McCarthy who’s obsession with power is disgusting. And, lastly, we once again got more information on these reps. The Freedom Caucus, for example, is not worth a pot to piss in and is overflowing with phonies.
At the end of the day we all know that government is not going to save us. Not the House, not the Supreme Court, not the presidency. Government IS the problem. It can never solve the problem. We were able to throw a wrench in their machine if only for a little while. This was never going to be the final battle where we could win and all would be well. This is just one more skirmish on the long road to freedom. We have to just keep fighting them everyday any way we can.
Well said. There’s also the sad truth is that most of these reps, even ones who are “well meaning,” are bought and paid for, and can only take so much pressure. We can be mad about it, but we know the swamp has organized itself this way and set up effective gatekeeping, so the mere fact that a dozen or so held out long enough to accomplish what you’ve described is a true, actual victory. We aren’t dealing with perfect people.
With it pared down to 6 or 7 holdouts, there becomes a real risk that KM will pivot to shenanigans with the numbers, maybe cut a deal with Ds to reduce the denominator, and then forever-more blame the “extremists” for making it necessary. The holdouts need to be very savvy and careful at this point. Also, the 6 or 7 should consider the value of letting it be worth the while for the others who held out with them for 3 days. Don’t make them regret it. It’s actually the stronger position now to let the 14 take their victory, compromised as it may be; that way, the holdouts can keep the moral high ground – and the leverage – for future showdowns. If the holdouts go kamikaze at this point, they risk not only being brutally punished and vanquished as terrorists (was always going to happen) but also drawing the ire of the 14 who think they got a deal. If the holdouts go scorched earth, they risk turning the dozen who took the deal against them. This exercise proved that the Speaker will have to cut deals if they can get the holdouts into double digits. That is a win. If the 14 end up getting burned on this deal, which we all probably think they will – the lesson won’t be to fall in line and be good soldiers, cuz think of what it took to get them to this place to begin with; it’ll harden them in the right direction, make them driver a harder bargain next time.
This has been a wildly successful showdown. There’s a strong coalition going forward.

We look so fondly back on Jefferson, Washington and the other Founding Fathers who had their hand in our early amazing American Government but forget that they would not have been there if not for the average member of the Colonies that helped fight the down and dirty battle against our original Government the British.

It honestly just seems to take a few hours some times when the political horizon seems to change a bit and we need to expect to see many downcast and emotionally dreary posts.
