We accept things as they are, not as we would wish them to be and never as we would pretend them to be. Pretending is an endless quest akin to convincing. Those who operate in the world of political pretense expend an exhaustive amount of energy in constant vigilance against those who speak plain truths.
The House of Representatives has adjourned until 10pm tonight, when another vote will be taken, as outlined by the design of the Kevin McCarthy supporters.
Why adjourn? Why return at 10:00pm on a Friday evening? Simply, because the McCarthy team is counting on several House members (mostly Democrats) not being in attendance for the quorum, facilitating a lower threshold of the vote to achieve a majority.
435/434 members present = 218 votes needed
433/432 members present = 217 votes needed
431/430 members present = 216 votes needed
429/428 members present = 215 votes needed
etc.
(Washington DC) – […] McCarthy got an additional jolt of energy on the 13th ballot when Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), another previous opponent, also flipped to support him. He still fell short of the necessary majority of those voting present, however, with six GOP members remaining in the no camp.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), a moderate and key McCarthy ally, said the chamber hoped to adjourn after the thirteenth ballot to allow allies of the California Republican to sit down one-on-one with his remaining dissenters. As to whether their opposition comes down to McCarthy himself, he said: “We’re gonna find that out.”
And lawmakers then followed suit, voting to adjourn the chamber until 10 p.m. That will tee up a potentially decisive ballot late Friday night.
McCarthy, speaking to the press, said he would have the votes needed for election when it came back into session. (more)

Kevin McCarthy is going to be Speaker by hook or by crook. The Freedom Caucus isn’t going to stop him, and there aren’t any viable alternative candidates stepping up. The “Magnificent Seven” are in a position to extract a price but the window is closing fast. If they decide to kamikaze in without getting anything then they may be brave but they aren’t smart.
I was just thinking I hope they extracted some benefit but if McCarthy is using a scheme like a lower quorum then they may be SOL. Hopefully the ones who have recently flipped would flip back if he does such a thing.
The “Magnificent Seven” turned into six hold-outs. I commend them, but let’s see what they do tonight. I expect Biggs, Boebert, and Gaetz to hold tight; the others, I don’t trust. Plus, I believe that Kev has made some BIPARTISAN back-door deals in order to confirm his “win” tonight. He probably made arrangements for 7 House members to not show up tonight, lowering his number to win at 215 votes, while at the same time, buying off a few of the last six hold-outs.

I hope McCarthy is like a Republican version of Pelosi, not another John Boehner or Paul Ryan.
Boehner sandbagged conservatives but gave Obama everything he wanted, saying he only had 1/2 of 1/3 of the government.
Then Paul Ryan couldn’t deliver despite the GOP having both houses of Congress AND the presidency.

No, they won’t. That’s where the “by crook” part comes in. If all 20 remain opposed but the other 200 remain united then McCarthy would work a deal with the Democrats to get him over the top. Then it’s payback time for the 20.
Furthermore- the Democrats wouldn’t help Kevin for free.
In that way the Freedom Caucus would not only erode their own position in the GOP caucus, they would make an implacable enemy in McCarthy and give the Democrats a stronger hand.
The other 200 are only backing him because he won’t fold. If he were to fold and step aside, they would immediately back somebody else and Kevin McCarthy knows it. Why? Because he’s been here before. Nobody was backing Paul Ryan before Kevin McCarthy got out of the way, and he only got out of the way because he realised he did not have the votes
As for him making a deal with the Devil, well, like you said, the Democrats aren’t going to defect for nothing and if Kevin McCarthy gives them major concessions in exchange for putting him over the top then he is finished as Speaker and finished as a Republican. He will have no credibility as Speaker and as a Republican after ceding so much ground to the opposition

I figure they thought that when they stood fast for several votes then others would join them and then it would hopefully snowball. But when nobody from the 200 budged after twelve votes they realized it was a lost cause and tried to make the best deal possible. Regardless, if all we have are the 7 or even the 20 out of 435 then we don’t have much at all.
If the Dems help McCarthy get his numbers by not showing up, he will be a one-term speaker. Not sure if he wants the speakership that badly. Media can try to hide the slimy-ness of this but within Congress, within the R Party, McCarthy will not be able to get the stink off.
It’s also possible that the 14 members who are trying to make a deal with him – take a look at the smaller assembly and back-out of the deal.

Their one option to get rid of McCarthy later on is a non-option.
There is a rule that allows a call for a vote for the speaker to vacate the speakership. It requires 218 vote majority to want McCarthy removed –anything less, McCarthy stays. They have 5 to 20, not 218. It’s the flip situation to this week’s speaker vote, where a small number do have power.
If McCarthy gets the gavel, he’s like an embedded tick.
