The Republican battle for Speaker of the House of Representatives continues with multiple factions competing for influence. The sausage making inside the GOPe conference is doing what that sausage makers in the GOPe conference always do. There’s a lot of opposition to Kevin McCarthy and the vast majority of it is well deserved.
Yes, the swamp is doing swampy things, and yes, it’s a hot mess. But that’s also what happens in a two-party congress within a constitutional republic where members from very different states end up arguing for position based on an ideology that varies wildly. Notice that if you get rid of the two-party system, all of this stuff seemingly evaporates. Funny how the people who construct the two-party system don’t want us to notice that.
In this video, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a representative who supports the MAGA agenda and Kevin McCarthy for speaker, calls out some of the well-known voices in the GOPe apparatus who are doing swampy things. WATCH:

I would suggest not getting emotionally invested in any of this internecine arguing. If you have let your congressional representative know your expectation, the only thing we can do is watch it play out.

Yes. She wants to be on committees again. Gaetz wants real investigations. Both things are important. Different strategies for them.
She sounded totally unhinged on Bannon’s War Room. She claims others are making it personal – but truly sounds like she is. She said her “friends” should “take the win” but she was against them from the beginning, so admitting that their strategy has brought a “win” contradicts her early support for McCarthy. If she been bitterly opposed her “friends” from the beginning and is now patronizing them saying they got a “win” – what the hell does she stand for? She’s coming off as irrational on this.
I heard something different. Demanding committee assignments & leadership for themselves in exchange for their vote for speaker is definitely wrong headed. I wouldn’t support anyone that would sell their vote for a committee assignment.
In the context of her statement, she’s the only member of the caucus without committee assignments yet she asked for nothing for herself or anyone else. The referenced 3 asked for positions for themselves & didn’t stand up for the member singled out.
She heard that from McCarthy, she took his bait and got it lodged in her teeth. Careful.

It sounds like the Freedom Caucus got the “rule” changes they wanted and MTG thinks that there was a deal made for those concessions by McCarthy.
If they got the rule changes that they wanted then they should have voted accordingly.
If they didn’t uphold their side of the grand bargain then they cannot be trusted either.
Seen on War Room: MTG was furious that Gaetz, Boebert, and one other (can’t remember name) were allegedly bargaining with McCarthy for specific Committee positions in exchange for their votes.

Technically, couldn’t enough republicans stay in their offices to lower the denominator, so that Jeffries would win? Unlikely, but I think it’s technically possible. I still support the play against McCarthy, even not knowing how it will turn out. The difference between Republican dissidents and democrat dissidents is the Rs are willing to “kill the hostage.” and dems (including the squad) always – ALWAYS – fall in line. It would be catastrophic if Jeffries or someone like Liz Cheney were to get speaker – but IMO the grassroots right HAS to show it’s willing to fight, come what may, or we’re already lost. MTG is wrong that this is “just one vote.” It’s the Speaker, it affects how the whole Congressional term plays out.

I think she said it would help conservatives control committees, not just her, and that would let the conservatives control McCarthy because he would need their votes and policies. A Dem speaker would not care what any of the conservatives or really any repubs wanted nor would he listen much to them nor would he put them on committees that they wanted to control. It actually made a lot of sense when she explained it.

What did Trump get in exchange for his endorsement of McCarthy? There must have been some empty promise made to Trump to get maga support for McCarthy. Why else would he do it after McCarthy’s two faced nature was revealed beyond a reasonable doubt? Maybe McCarthy promised to help him with the never ending witch hunt. I will try to take the advice of the wise one and not get too emotionally invested.
That being said, I am disappointed in MTG.
I recall a time when all here and many other places knew what a snake that Lizzie Cheney was.
Around that same time, MTG was getting stripped of any committee responsibilities while McCarthy was defending Liz Cheney in her number 3 role.
It was at that time that we knew for sure that McCarthy was linked with McConnell within the swamp.
And that McCarthy’s trajectory was right in line with those of his predecessors (Ryan, Bohener, etc).

A discussion on radio I heard suggested that one of the big RULES issues at play is putting one in place where the Speaker can be recalled if he loses his support from the base. It seems like a necessary requirement and I would hope that someone would ask MTG whether McCarthy has committed to this rule change or not.
Otherwise, I see McCarthy just doing the McConnell backstab on all the conservatives.
