The Republican battle for Speaker of the House of Representatives continues with multiple factions competing for influence. The sausage making inside the GOPe conference is doing what that sausage makers in the GOPe conference always do. There’s a lot of opposition to Kevin McCarthy and the vast majority of it is well deserved.
Yes, the swamp is doing swampy things, and yes, it’s a hot mess. But that’s also what happens in a two-party congress within a constitutional republic where members from very different states end up arguing for position based on an ideology that varies wildly. Notice that if you get rid of the two-party system, all of this stuff seemingly evaporates. Funny how the people who construct the two-party system don’t want us to notice that.

There essentially WERE no “parties” when Washington was President. There were “factions”, but they had not really coalesced into “parties” yet.
Parties, as we understand them today, basically consolidated after the 12th Amendment was ratified in 1804 that established that the President and Vice President had to elected as a “team”. Thus, the “team” had to be formed, and political parties solidified in order to make sure that both the Pres and VP candidates were “of the same political bent”.

The 2 party system is a direct consequence of the structure of our representative democracy that awards power by majority vote. To “get rid” of our 2 party system, you first have to “get rid” of the basic structure of our system of representative government.
In our 240+ years of the Republic, viable 3rd parties have been fleeting and rare. And in most cases, have essentially either replaced or merged with one of the 2 extant viable Parties.

Maine CD #2 was pro Trump in 2016 and 2020. The problem is in CD #1 which encompasses the libtard enclaves along the coast. These are the two philosophically diverse areas of Maine. I’ve been attending my local GOP organization’s monthly meetings. One of our Maine House candidates won, the other lost by a small margin. Support from Maine GOP was minimal. A central issue is the LGBTQ agenda being pushed in our public schools…including elementary…that should be non-partisan and one all parents can support regardless of party affiliation. I attended the GOP provided training to be a poll watcher…the training was better than nothing but not by much. Many same day voter registrations even in small town western Maine. Democrats running elections in these same small towns were oblivious/ignorant-willful or otherwise to the laws they were to follow. I believe re-enacting voter ID has more impact on election integrity than anything else. I agree RCV is horrible but we need to pick out battles. School board elections are now critical to protecting our kids.

I’ve been told by one of the candidates for a Maine House seat that a lot of folks in this area are not registered voters. They’re not interested in politics and just don’t care. I think both the MTG side and the Gaetz/Boebert side are acting on principle as much as they disagree.
Debates like this are healthy. I do not see either as an enemy. I don’t know how this will end up today. However, the passionate debate needs to be had.

The last time we had free and fair elections was UNKNOWN.
I currently reside in a country that has more than 2 political parties. The US system is basically ‘first past the post’….whoever gets the most electoral college votes wins. This is somewhat more difficult (or fairly impossible) in a system with more than 2 parties. You often end up with coalitions, etc. For example, where I currently am, there are two main parties….for the sake of argument, let’s call them Democrat and Republican. They have alternatively been in power for 50+ years. The electorate became totally disillusioned with both these parties in the last election, and voted BOTH of them out. However, NO PARTY had enough votes (consider electoral college votes) to get the majority. So, what did the corrupt (and voted out) ‘Dems and Republicans’ do? They formed a coalition, so that, with their combined votes, they were able to ‘pass the post’, and became our current government. Even though they had been resoundingly voted out of government.
