Apparently, that type of commonsense possibility did not make it into the analysis. However, the authors of the study do suggest insurance companies should start considering insurance risk hikes based on vaccination status.

Or at least those are the findings of a new study published this month in The American Journal of Medicine. During the summer of 2021, Canadian researchers examined the encrypted government-held records of more than 11 million adults, 16% of whom hadn’t received the COVID vaccine.
They found that the unvaccinated people were 72% more likely to be involved in a severe traffic crash—in which at least one person was transported to the hospital—than those who were vaccinated. That’s similar to the increased risk of car crashes for people with sleep apnea, though only about half that of people who abuse alcohol, researchers found.
The excess risk of car crash posed by unvaccinated drivers “exceeds the safety gains from modern automobile engineering advances and also imposes risks on other road users,” the authors wrote.
Of course, skipping a COVID vaccine does not mean that someone will get into a car crash. Instead, the authors theorize that people who resist public health recommendations might also “neglect basic road safety guidelines.”
Why would they ignore the rules of the road? Distrust of the government, a belief in freedom, misconceptions of daily risks, “faith in natural protection,” “antipathy toward regulation,” poverty, misinformation, a lack of resources, and personal beliefs are potential reasons proposed by the authors.
The findings are significant enough that primary care doctors should consider counseling unvaccinated patients on traffic safety—and insurance companies might base changes to insurance policies on vaccination data, the authors suggest. (read more)

My daughter & I were rear ended by an illegal in Austin TX. He spoke no English. He had no license and no insurance. Talking with the Travis co deputy, I asked why he wasn’t under arrest. His response was for me was to file a claim with my own insurance if I expected a settlement. There was nothing he could do. It’s a little off subject but it came to mind & I wanted to share.

In looking over the study it was noted that the subjects were not only drivers, but also passengers and pedestrians.
Also, “The largest relative differences were that those who had not received a COVID vaccine were more likely to be younger, living in a rural area, and below the socioeconomic quintile.”
In summation they reported “A limitation of our study is that correlation does not mean causality because our data did not explore potential causes of vaccine hesitancy or risky driving.”

There are multi-variate statistical methods that allow possible or likely co-variables like that to be incorporated and that will quantify the percentage of the final outcome or statistical variance that can be attributed to them
Medical researchers use those methods, lest their very important outcomes turn out to be because some subjects are overweight or have certain unhealthy habits or pursuits
Insurance companies are capable of that too, they’ve got numerous statisticians to produce actuarial tables showing how long people are likely to live so that they can set rates to ensure they stay in the black and don’t run themselves bankrupt by not charging enough to counterbalance their payouts
… although the insurance companies just might accept the simplistic conclusion of a study like this as an excuse to raise rates, even if for the wrong reason (not vaccinated), and not look too hard into the pesky details

“Involved in” doesn’t mean they caused the crash. I have been involved in two car crashes in my life, both caused by the other drivers. And I did nothing wrong, THEY wen’t driving safely and attentively.

Did they have data on miles driven/ridden by their vaxxed and unvaxxed populations?
Did they only count accidents where both drivers and all passengers were unvaxxed, or was it just the one or more injured persons? Do we distinguish whether the at-fault driver was jabbed?
I don’t see confidence intervals or p-values. Is it 0.72 +- 1.04 with 95%, which is meaningless?
Also, when they publish a study like this, I suspect someone of p-hunting. Medical folks generally use 0.95, which is fine. It means there is only one chance in twenty that the result is not due to chance. Except that only works for one question. If you have a spreadsheet with 20 columns of data next to the vaxxed column, it is pretty likely that one of those columns shows a correlation with a high enough p-value, because it’s the one due to chance.
I spoke with someone at a Christmas gathering. She said her husband was sick as a dog with the worst case of Covid. Said her husband was double vaxxed and triple boosted.
