The scale of a determined military capability eventually wins, even with a strong resistance, specifically because: (a) Ukraine is connected to a common border with Russia, and (b) the citizens in the eastern part of the country are aligned with Russia.
Macgregor also identifies the financial motive for the government of Sweden to join NATO, even though the Swedish citizens would likely not support the effort if put to a referendum. As the retired colonel also notes the lack of recent U.S. media talking positively about the status of Ukraine, is an indicator that Russia is solidifying the eastern part of the country with lessened resistance. Battalion Tactical Groups are hollowed out to where the burden of battle is being shifted to the company level. This makes coordination with artillery support more difficult because the effects of the smaller units are harder to evaluate.
Without robust artillery support, advancing Russian troops are easier to kill.

And there’s probably a third reason too. No accountability for all the previous aid/weapons already sent over. It wouldn’t surprise me if most of the weapons have already been sold on the black market by the CIA.
I don’t trust our lawless government, DoD, SD, CIA, none of it. Both parties or msm thrown in there too. Burn it all down. Start from scratch starting with the movement already begun at the school board level. And then just stop at the state level. At this point we no longer need a federal government. Period!

He is not a tool of Putin or a propagandist, but he is a contrarian who has over the weeks morphed into an advocate for a certain point of view. I appreciate hearing “the other side” from him as a necessary counter point from the rah rah Ukrainian pom pom waivers in the media, however, it is pretty obvious that this war is not going well for Russia and proving to cost many multiples more than expected in money, material, and men. They made impressive gains early in the war particularly in the south east, but the drive on Kiev must be recognized for what it was — a tactical and strategic defeat. Nor is getting your flag ship sunk a good look either. On the battlefield we are witnessing a technological shift in the balance of power away from tanks in favor of high tech hand held infantry anti – tank weapons. Everyone keeps pointing to Mariupol as a success. Sure, just like Santa Ana had a great victory in San Antonio. It had been surrounded and effectively cut-off since early in the war and has been doomed for a very long time. What is remarkable is how long it held out. Whether they were Nazis or not, they were fierce fighters willing to put up fanatical resistance to the Russian. So…. It seems the initial moves are over and the war has settled down into a bloody stalemate. Contrarians like McGregor keep telling me that Russia is grinding out a slow but sure victory in the east, but I don’t see it. They have not made many notable advances in a long long time and they even seem to have been pushed back around Kharkov. This looks to me like a costly war of attrition. Who that favors? I’m not sure. McGregor might be right and the weight of Russia’s greater military might may eventually lead to a Ukrainian collapse, but I do not know about that. The Ukrainians seem to be up for this fight, and Biden has already promised our grandchildren’s inheritance will backfill their material losses. I don’t see a Ukrainian collapse coming anytime in the near future. Nor do I see the Ukrainians reversing the Russian gains in the south and east. It was obvious to any serious student of military history that once Russia decided to start, this was an OPERATION conducted to fulfill a LIMITED OBJECTIVE Strategic aim. heck Putin even telegraphed the objectives for months.
Putin is well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of his Armed Forces and his own internal power base.
Colonel McGregor left out a couple of interesting levers that Russia can deploy v/v Turkey:
First is Russia’s relationship with Iran. There are actually factions in Iran that have had relationships with the Russians (USSR) since WWII and dating back to the “Great Game” of 1800’s. That relationship forced the Allies to commit troops to Iran to keep an eye on the Russians, while securing the lend-lease route through Iran. Even during the regime of the Shah, Iran bought equipment from Russia (USSR). The RUSSIANS always honor reliable friends, a friendship that transcends who is running the Kremlin.
Second is that Russians can turn on and off the resistance to the Turkish efforts in Iraq and Syria.
Third is that Russia can and will supply more stuff to Turkey.
These three items are the reason Erdogan’s price to NATO and the US will be high to cooperate on Sweden and Finland.
Also, keep in mind Colonel McGregor’s last point, the joining of NATO by Finland and Sweden put two more pigs at the trough of US Tax Dollars … which is why Putin is likely made his current statement that he is OK with these two joining NATO so long as the military situation is not altered drastically. The current regime in DC is killing off the US from within and extra help to that end is fine by him.
Russia went into the war without powerful, committed allies. I didn’t think they really needed them because I thought the world’s reaction would be the same as when Putin took Crimea back. But Putin took Biden’s bank so now it’s the West vs. Russia. That was the surprise to me.
It depends on your definition of “Allies”.
In a strictly military-operational sense, Putin knew he would get no soldiers from his friends.
Yet, he also knew that short of direct conflict the only weapon in NATO’s quiver was economic sanctions to counter his announced intentions. That is where he has “Allies”, which in a limited objective conflict is working out fine. Plus, the US has even accelerated its economic self destruction.
There is a difference between OPERATIONAL (and Tactical) and STRATEGIC levels of thinking, planning and execution.

Russia was going to do this and do it now because they felt they had no choice. If it was only about changing Ukraine’s leadership, Putin could have done that easily enough with a little well placed polonium or novichok like he’s done on the soil of NATO countries (England). Putin wants the gateways back. I’m NOT saying he’s trying to rebuild the former Soviet Empire, but he wants those invasion routes locked down.
Unfortunately, he has neither the time nor the resources to be successful in conventional terms. The demographic clock has already made that clear. Russian education levels make that clear. The state of Russia’s military training and education make that clear. Add in the abx-resistant TB infection rate of nearly 25%, HIV that is so high they don’t even track it anymore, substance abuse off the charts, and not even touching on Vlad an his buddies clearing out the treasury and you have a country that is simply one man’s playground.
I don’t know anything about Zelensky and don’t really care to. Ukraine is the sacrificial altar on which Russia’s army and Russia’s government dies before Russia implodes into various regional countries. Better to have it there than spread all over the place, and yeah, we’ll owe Ukraine a bit to help them rebuild once this is over. Things would go better if an industrious Ruskie would speed Vlad assuming room temperature.
Yes, it’s absolutely a proxy war and we’re walking a very thin line. It has to be kept at that level to not trigger Vlad from crossing the ‘existential’ line and firing off nukes. There is another major flaw in the article your site and it is a flaw that has been repeated for at least the past 75 years.
The assessments done by these “experts” in these articles is done through the flawed prism of currency conversion and equivalent costs to the West. There are financial limits as to how rapidly the Russians can recover but to use Western Standards to measure the “recovery” would be a big mistake.
It is the same flaw as in the arguments made about the money spent by the US being equal to Military Power and Equipment Stocks over the past 75 years as well.
Will the cabal running the west risk a hot war with Russia after their proxy war has been lost? It’s over except for the arms and money laundering continue.
The Russians of course have planned for a war against NATO and have only used a small number of troops in the special military operation in Ukraine.
Once the propaganda mouth pieces have to admit that Russia was successful and now control the east and all sea ports of Ukraine, will they push for an escalation of war or diplomacy?

Trump could have secured the southern border had the Democrats been prepared to give 10% or less of what they have been pouring into Ukraine, not to mention their numerous boondoggles.
