As with all things Ukraine, when the initial reports of the Russian cruise missile attack against the military training facility located near the border with Poland, we said to be cautious about western reporting of no NATO military personnel present, killed or injured.
The reason is for the warning was simple – if NATO is providing weapons and training, they’ve got to be doing the distribution and training somewhere in Ukraine near the NATO border. Conduct war operations in a war zone, and you run the risk of war outcomes.
Now the Daily Mail is beginning to report on ‘missing, feared dead’ former British special forces operators likely killed in the blast. As the story evolves, how long will it be before U.S. headlines carry similar missing U.S. “contractor” stories?
Most of the U.S. and NATO warfighting is carried out by independent contractors or mercenary groups now. Ukraine is the perfect battlespace for that unofficial type of war fighter engagement.
(Daily Mail) – Three British former special forces soldiers are feared to have been killed in a Russian airstrike near the Polish border. More than 30 Russian cruise missiles targeted the Yavoriv base yesterday, killing as many as 180 people.
Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for Russia’s ministry of defence, said the base was struck by ‘long-range, high-precision’ weapons because it was hosting ‘foreign mercenaries and a large shipment of foreign weapons’.
He added: ‘The destruction of foreign mercenaries who arrived on the territory of Ukraine will continue.’
Konashenkov said up to 180 people had been killed in the strike, though Ukraine initially said 35 people died and another 134 were wounded.
But a source told The Mirror today: ‘There were many more killed within the site than has been claimed and bodies are still being found.

There’s a big motive to keep any American or British death quiet, because it would undermine the official narrative being broadcast by western media. All of these mercenary soldiers know they are operating in an unofficial capacity in order to provide western government with plausible deniability. That is the risk that “contracted” war fighters assume when they take the very generous money offered. It’s a mess.

A week ago or so, I posted a FLIGHTAWARE app track of a US military helo in that area that had been reported as being in Oklahoma 2 days prior. There was also large cargo planes tagged as NATO through their transponders in that area at the same time. That build up has been going on for at least a week or 10 days. Far longer than the MSM has been reporting military assistance to Ukraine through Poland.

Suddenly, the Western elites have gone pale at the realization that they cannot replace Russian oil, gas and grain easily or quickly. I hear lack of nitrogen potash, and other fertilizer/ plant nutrients is impacting farmers in the south and causing those in the Midwest to shift to crops that need less of those things, so maybe less corn, wheat and other grains, the sorts of things needed for poultry, hogs and cattle. We too may see food issues if the inflation and ban on Russian imports become long term, and it looks that way.

You are right about those shortages. I was painting with a broad brush, though, that we have abundant natural resources that we are not using in a smart manner. Can anyone ever really alone or any country ever really go it completely alone? No, but the USA is better situated than many others.
However, it does look like there is famine on the horizon for the poorest countries because of the fertilizer issues. Those will impact us, too, as you say. It’s all so stupid and frustrating. People are hurting here now, too, with the energy prices, and your comment about the current state of farming in the US is what I am seeing, too.

Yes. A family member, former US Navy Seal, was on Karzai’s security detail. $10K per week. 6 months in the zone, then would come back and try for a “normal life” but could not ever get close to the “rush”. So after a year or so, back into the next zone.

You made an excellent point. The Ukrainians claim that their defenses were overwhelmed by a salvo of 30+missiles. They claimed to have shot down most of them, but eight got through and hit the base. However, if this were true, why didn’t they sound the air raid alarms when they first detected the incoming missiles and why didn’t the mercenaries hear the explosions from the intercepted missiles.
According to pro Russian site, they claim that only eight cruise missiles were fired from a corvette in the Black Sea. You might remember the Russians used corvettes stationed in the Caspian Sea when the targeted ISIS with a missile strike some years ago.

Also, we had an old Soviet era drone (Ukrainian?) fly across multiple NATO countries before it crashed in Croatia a couple days ago. It makes one wonder about NATO’s air defenses.

I heard today that Russia was running out of ammo. 30 “high precision “ cruise missiles doesn’t sound like they are running outta ammunition .
And there will be more hits on any Ukraine base near not just Poland, but also Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia (Slovak Republic) or any possible convoy entering Ukraine from these countries. Russia had already warned that such would happen and … surprise … it did and it won’t be just the one time.
Should Russia prevail and it turns into an insurgency war, it will probably play out for Russia as a replay of their fight in Afghanistan.
When Russia recently warned about foreign fighters and they would be targeted equally as an enemy, that was the first hint Russia already had intel.
Whatever they warn about, they already know and are not speculating.

I don’t think so. There are a lot of ethnic Russians in Ukraine. Probably more than a few others who prefer Putin over the Ukrainian corruptocrats. Any insurgency might be easily compromised.

I’m no soldier, but isn’t it foolish to be staying in building over which the enemy has complete control of the airspace? Between surveillance technology and missile technology, aren’t you a bit of sitting duck, so to speak? We’ve all seen videos portraying the Russian army as a bunch of incompetents , but doesn’t this incident sort of take the cake when it comes to poor decision making?

All that fantastic special forces training doesn’t help when someone drops a rocket on your head. A long time ago I spent several hours in a hole while mortars were falling about. I was later told by someone who was counting that the enemy was dropping some 400 shells an hour. I had time to ponder the randomness of it all. It didn’t matter how fast or smart or skilled you were. Some moron on the other side of the hill who wasn’t really aiming might just blast you to pieces out of dumb luck. It made me reconsider the wisdom of messing around in other peoples’ wars.
Proof again. Use the 72 hour rule before forming an opinion on the goings on in Ukraine. Stay neutral until facts come out.
