I am a Trump supporter, and have been since he rode down the elevator. However, whoever it is that is advising him that the Big Beautiful Bill eliminated tax on Social Security benefits has been telling him a big fat lie, and sending him out to repeat it.
Just did taxes. No tax on social security is a damned lie. Gotta pay tax on social security this year, just like last year, and just like the year before. Amounts withheld on the pension payments cover that income, but the social security benefits are taxable, even with the new credits. All they gave us was an enhanced credit, and even that runs out in 2028. Smoke, mirrors, and lies.
Just amend the revenue code to make all social security benefits NOT taxable income, since we already paid tax on it when we paid it in, and then remove line 6 on the 1040. And stop lying to us about it. Looking at YOU, 47. I am MAJOR PO’d this morning. Gotta go find something to break. Happy $%&# Friday!

My income is low enough I can take out about $15,000 with no tax on SS. I am taking that out of my retirement account BEFORE I reach RMD to keep the tax down on my SS and total income when I have to take RMD at 73.

How it works (federal income tax, not payroll tax):
Calculate “provisional income” = adjusted gross income (AGI) + tax‑free interest + 1/2 of Social Security benefits.
If provisional income is:
Up to $25,000 (single) / $32,000 (married filing jointly): 0% of benefits taxable.
Between $25,000–$34,000 (single) / $32,000–$44,000 (MFJ): up to 50% of benefits taxable (phase‑in range).
Above $34,000 (single) / $44,000 (MFJ): up to 85% of benefits taxable.
Notes:
“Up to” means actual taxable portion is determined by formula; it isn’t a flat additional tax rate but the percentage of benefits included in taxable income. Your actual tax owed depends on your marginal income‑tax rate.
Separate from this, payroll taxes (FICA/SECA) for Social Security are fixed percentage rates on earnings, not a sliding scale tied to Social Security benefits.
Talk to a tax accountant the few bucks will save you a bundle in the long run.

I think the story was that senator byrd sponsored some bill that said congress had to do a stand alone bill to make changes to social security or something along those lines. Kind like taxing not just the interest on your savings account, but taxing you on the principal when you withdraw that.

Many of the M.A. plans cover dental, eyes, hearing OTC items, gym membership, transportation, etc.

You don’t pay extra for Medicare Advantage – unless you choose to. My plan has dental and eye care coverage and I do not pay more than the Part B premium.
However, I agree with you. Medicare is way too complicated. It should just cover everything without having different “parts”,,, and I also don’t think we should pay ANYTHING since we paid for it all our working lives.
At that point Medicare will eat up your whole SS benefit not just part of it

Ben Sass has 3 months to live and has numerous different cancers in his body. It was such a deeply moving and spiritual experience listening to his answers in that interview concerning family, politics, cancer treatment, AI, young people and old people, and his personal beliefs in his spiritual journey facing death. The NYT writer and I were both in tears while hearing what he said.
