WHITE HOUSE – The prayers of the entire world are with the people of Ukraine tonight as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces. President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.
Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable.
I will be monitoring the situation from the White House this evening and will continue to get regular updates from my national security team.
Tomorrow, I will meet with my G7 counterparts in the morning and then speak to the American people to announce the further consequences the United States and our Allies and partners will impose on Russia for this needless act of aggression against Ukraine and global peace and security.
We will also coordinate with our NATO Allies to ensure a strong, united response that deters any aggression against the Alliance. Tonight, Jill and I are praying for the brave and proud people of Ukraine. (link)

I’ve seen some comments referring to the CTH stance that Russia wouldn’t invade Ukraine in this thread and minutes later they are gone. I’m a long term CTH reader and commenter, and support Sundance as one of the top conservative bloggers in the world, but this needs to be addressed and not swept under the rug by deleting comments. I’m screen shooting this comment and if it’s deleted will share with other blogs.
I will go out on a limb right now. Putin will NOT invade the Ukraine IMHO. He will attack and drive out the Ukraine military forces and the anti-Russian militia forces in the breakaway provinces. He will probably also take the opportunity to destroy a lot of Military infrastructure, air defense systems, military air bases and heavy weapons that he feels threaten Russia.
He will not do a general invasion IMHO. I could be wrong but if the reports of the troop and armor strength were close to accurate then Russia was never configured for an invasion. Again, I could be wrong but I agree with Sundance.

This was done to convince businesses to move there, a small island in the Caribbean. What a frustrating mess this is, especially because it’s largely – maybe even entirely – our own political leadership class’s fault. All the trouble between Ukraine and Russia started in 2014, after the Euromaidan violent coup which was spearheaded by ethnic Ukrainian neo-fascists and backed by the US state department and Soros NGOs, overthrew the democratically elected Russia-friendly president and replaced him with an EU- and NATO-friendly president, and after an announcement following a summit of NATO leaders in Bucharest that Ukraine and Georgia were to become members of NATO. This is what triggered the ethnic Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine to declare independence, which has lead to an eight-year-long civil war, and it is the reason why Russia annexed Crimea as well (Sevastopol is where Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is located, and there was no way the Russians were going to let that naval base fall into NATO hands). The 2016 version of Trump had the right idea about what our foreign policy toward Russia should have been (and still should be): We should forget about expanding NATO , which is an organization that has outlived its purpose anyway, and look for areas where we can work together with Russia toward common goals. We should have been working to strengthen our relations with Russia if for no other reason than to get them to assist us in containing China. Instead, we’ve repeatedly, needlessly provoked Russia by going back on promises not to expand NATO closer to their doorstep, treating Russia as if it were still the USSR. Putin, and the Russian people, see Russia as a European nation that is part of Western civilization. For cultural, historical and economic reasons, the natural inclination of Russia is to gravitate toward Europe and the West more generally.
This all leads back to Biden, Obama and his criminal regime. Now we have good people in a war zone that may soon come to our shores.
