Kraft-Heinz has announced the next wave of anticipated inflationary prices for their products. The announcement, and the timeline they provide for the price increases, is exactly in line with our prior estimations.
Prior CTH outlines on the path of inflation for this specific company are HERE (Dec) and HERE (Jan). Keep in mind, depending on the size of the buyer or wholesaler, and depending on the terms of the contracts for purchase, generally speaking, terms are net payment in 30, 60 or 90 days based on 180 day contracted price agreements which include rebates to retailers.
(Reuters) […] “The company expects inflation to be in the low-teens percentage range for 2022, with higher levels in the first half than in the second, said Chief Financial Officer Paulo Basilio.” (link)
Both Proctor & Gamble and Kraft-Heinz provide the best data points to predict future retail grocery inflation. Based on their previous notifications, we can now see that Kraft is anticipating the March – July rates of increase to remain approximately where they have been (20 to 30%) and then stabilize in the last half of the year bringing the yearly average into the “low teens.” This timeline is what we predicted back in October.
The prices we will see at the grocery stores will rise again in the spring (this is the backside of the inflationary cycle), continue through mid-summer, and then price increases should likely level off at the end of summer this year. Between the price today and the price at the point of leveling is approximately a 20% increase.
Each segment is different. However, on average a $5 item now will cost around $6 mid-summer, then settle. Average food basket prices going into the July 4th holiday will be approximately 20% higher than current, and 40% higher than July 2021. Some items will be 50 to 60% higher July 4, 2022, versus July 4, 2021.
Dairy products into manufacturing and processing went up 4.5% last month alone. Those price increases will continue accumulating into the products as ingredients. Expect another +25% on dairy goods at retail. Plastic packaging (jugs etc) is part of that product price.
Household chemicals, cleaning products, laundry detergents, paper goods as well as health and beauty care products like soaps, shampoos, dental and cosmetics, will see much higher price increases than food products because the raw materials (bases and chemicals) are off the charts higher in price. Cleaning products at wholesale jumped 3.8% in January alone. Expect to see anything containing chemicals on the extreme high end of price increases this year.
Another serious issue are paper and cardboard prices which are likely going to jump another 30 to 50% before they stop (if they do). Everything above comes shipped in boxes, so the cost of products carries the increased cost of the shipping cardboard.
Keep in mind a few points:
(1) The outlined price increases noted are against current price terms and contracts. Meaning, these are price increases from right now to the next fulfillment. These are not inflation price increases which are compared to a year ago. These are 5% to 20% increases from the current price right now.
(2) The price increases are not the final price increase. This is the price of a contract today from the field to the distribution center. The retailer also has additional price increases (transportation, energy, labor, etc) which they need to add to the wholesale price before you see the final price at retail (grocery store).
The final field to fork price is not yet known but will be higher than noted above. We are only seeing the notifications from field, through processing (Kraft and P&G) and into warehousing and distribution.
Additionally, the more an item needs to be processed, the higher the price increase will be. Food items that require multiple raw materials, ingredients and bases for processing (ex. condiments), when combined with increased packaging costs (oil, energy), will be much higher than foods with less processing, handling and packaging.
This has always been the nature of this specific supply chain.
Example: Many products, food, drinks and even cleaning products, contain citrus bases, additives, flavorings and distillation. Those products will be much higher in price due to the price increases in raw materials, combined with higher energy and petroleum costs. It is an issue of cumulative price increases in the production of the product from beginning to end.
Unfortunately, pet foods, specifically wet pet foods, will also be on the higher end of the price increases. Pet foods are subject to the higher end of price increases due to manufacturing and processing. Many high-end wet pet foods are also imported, so the transportation costs are higher.
CTH has recommended preparing for these massive increases in 2022 prices by thinking about the base products you use to make meals at home and holding an extra supply of shelf stable products, so you won’t hit the grocery store and face those massive increases. Another example will be coffee. Keep in mind Kraft Foods is Maxwell House, and coffee requires roasting (another energy cost).
The $200 food basket in early 2021 is now around $275. That same food basket will likely reach $325 this summer. I wish there were a better way to put it, because at the end of these price jumps is a lot of hardship for many working families.
Believe me, I feel that pain. I know what it looks like to see a grocery bill at checkout that suddenly makes the monthly car, rent or mortgage payment more challenging. That’s why we have been trying to support everyone with fact-based expectations since last fall, so we could help readers prepare ourselves to support our families, kids and grandkids who might be seeing these issues for the first time in their lives.
On the durable goods side of the equation, other than energy-price-impacted goods (tires, oils, rubber components etc), we can expect to see price increases of durable goods (electronics etc) settle down much faster this year, likely before spring. Unfortunately, the reason is obvious as demand is continuing to drop.
We must get the Democrat Communists out of office and stop the assault on the energy industry before it’s too late. If we do not get rid of them, we will lose the middle class.
Let’s Go Brandon!
Thank……PedoJoe46.
Bidenflation is violence.
Bidenflation will lead to violence for sure.
“I know where the food at, and I’m gonna get it.”
Which is exactly what they are hoping for…. just in time for midterms. “Martial Law and too dangerous to vote in person.”
It’s certainly purposeful treason
Bidenflation…Very clever
Come on man! As long as prices don’t go up, who cares how much inflation there is?
And I just saved you from Russia, you ingrates!
The big guy is trying to get his 10%.
10% inflation.
Yeah, those Russian Amish are really badasses, good thing slowpedosenilejoe was right on top of their plans to invade the Ukranian oasis paradise that Hunter likes to vacation/whore at, now that it has been saved he can continue to be the bag man for The Big Guy, bal.
HardyB: Why are you using the Amish to make a point they have nothing to do with?
Not funny.
Not even good sarcasm if that’s what you are aiming at.
I bought a box of cans of Diet Pepsi within the last month. They tasted watered down but had more fizz than what I remember.
Anyone else?
Watered down?
Are you sure you didn’t buy Coors beer by mistake?
Buy the canned drinks in the box and see what you think.
That Diet Pepsi was obviously not The Real Thing 🙂
Well, if Coke had not gone woke, I’d still be buying it. As it stands, no soda pop in this house.
We haven’t noticed that but we have run into stale bread on several occasions. We stopped for a burger at one of our local dives and we could hardly swallow it because it was so stale. Got a loaf of bread the same thing. Went to another local eatery on Sunday night for a quick Valentines bite and the bun again was stale ….seems like folks might be stretching the shelf life of the products. We are no longer eating out. We are NOT getting our money’s worth and we have plenty at hone. Sad for the businesses trying to stay afloat. But not on our dime. Sigh.
Restaurants all over the Country are going to start failing. Everyone I talk with are curtailing their restaurant patronage. There are always exceptions I guess, but overall I see more people cutting back. The same with traveling. It is no longer a; Hop, skip and a jump. It is now an investment.
We have !
I won’t be traveling by air (or train or bus) any time soon. At least not until the masking theater is over.
Not dining out any longer. Too expenses for the quality of the food being served ………….. which is pretty much what you said.
Went up the street to Citgo for a burger the other day. Cook said they were outta buns after trying multiple stores and not finding any. Got my burger with all the fixings on white bread toast. Very tasty!
The Diet Pepsi with caffeine varies quite a lot. It also doesn’t keep well–Use it or lose it. I suspect they vary the amount of artificial sweetener at the various bottling companies/plants. I’m seeing a lot of that kind of stuff in different products…they are skimping. I do a lot of food preparation as a diabetic, so, I know when something is off taste-wise.
That is what I drink since Coke went woke. I have not seen a change. You may have a bad run. It happens. Call the local Pepsi distributor and tell them.
So, they are sequestering CO2 in soda pop?
Everyone hates a flat soda.
Does Henry’s law not apply to the oceans as well?
*drops mic*
Well, normally what I do to capture carbon is to set a pot on the stove. I boil the water and get all the air out of it. When the water cools down it will reabsorb the air. Any carbon in the air will also be captured in the water. If we just had enough pots to do this continually, we could get ahead of the game.
Since you are my peer, you can review it. Regardless of the outcome, the end result will be peer reviewed.
Pretty sure that effect is going to be negligible compared to about 352.67x10E18 gallons of seawater.
Obviously, you are not familiar with Boil’s Law. 🙂
Got me there. 😉
You brought up physics using Henery, I set you up using Boyle lol. Takes one to know one.
I am your peer and I can peer into the future and see that you will always be a smart Alec.
Your humor is not peerless, but…
I like it. Don’t change. ✊
Mine are the same.
Drink water. Cheaper and better for you in the long haul.
Yes, especially diet soda ! That aspartame will kill you !
Yup.
Aspartame + MSG = perfect body ph for cancers.
Ouch.
I have switched to Frannie’s diet soda, which is sweetened with sucralose instead of the toxic aspartame used in almost all other diet sodas. Also has some vitamins and green tea extract added (in small amounts). They have a “coco coco latte” flavor, which is just diet chocolate soda for 59 cents a quart, which is good enough that I can drink it and not miss diet coke. Sometimes I add some cream for a nice sweet drink instead of dessert. And in summer I also put in coffee, so it’s a nice cold chocolate iced coffee – great!
Sucralose is no better.
If you like to make water special just add cucumber slices, or lemon, lime or orange wedges.
I bought a container of that old favorite “Tang “ for my soft drink.
There are 100 reasons not to drink and support Coke & Pepsi. Watered down soda is another one.
I rarely buy soda and almost never in cans. This was my 2nd such purchase in a year or more. It is handy to have bottles or cans of drinks that fit into the cup holder on my tractor.
Saw the Diet Pepsi at the Mexican grocery store. I don’t recall ever seeing Diet Pepsi there. In fact, I don’t recall seeing any diet soda of any kind there. Diet drinks are gringo drinks. The manager must have been offered a great deal. Maybe he got a great deal because the distributor didn’t want it to cause reputational damage among their loyal soda drinkers. Don’t know.
Diet Pepsi and Diet Dr. Pepper (aka Diet Texas Coke) hasn’t changed other than price. Twelve-pack has gone from $5.99 to $8.99 in the last couple months.
Diet Dew is too.
Buy a Sodastream machine and make your own with cordial
One can get natural cordials or even make your own with soft summer fruit, esp berries
Retired Magistrate here: Just got back from the local Kroger store. Found things on sale, which I didn’t really need now but I will need them in the future. Got Colgate toothpaste for 88 cents and Colgate toothbrushes for 88 cents. Salmon steaks were on sale along with other items. Spent about $68.00 this time.
Over the weekend we checked out Aldi’s and found good prices on white bread, 87 cents a loaf and wheat bread $1.47. Also good prices on frozen fruits and vegetables.
If you are willing to shop around and have the time, and we do because we are retired, you can still find good buys. No, we are not hoarding, we are just preparing so we can feed ourselves and some of our neighbors.
Don’t lose hope, we will get through this. GOD Bless.
This works if your vehicle gets good mileage. Otherwise, the pennies you save on bread are spent buying gas at BIDEN PRICES.
Retired Magistrate here: Thankfully the Kroger and Aldi stores are not far from each other. No, my 10 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee does not get good gas mileage; it is a tank. However, I need it to get up and down our steep, curvy driveway. So, I check out ads on line, do digital coupons and mailed coupons and then make a plan as to where we will go and when to make the trip so it is as efficient as possible.
That’s what I do too Marcia, but I usually only go to town once every 4-6 weeks. Had to make an extra trip this month so I could early vote yesterday. But voting is worth the extra trip.
Plan your route for max fuel efficiency, and go less often.
We WILL get through this, and ultimately the other side will be GLORIOUS!
Noticing a lot of the downsizing packaging trick.
Frozen meat balls, bag is 1/2 full, compared to 2-6 months ago, AND the price is double.
Smoked sausage, packaged like weiners,..a single row, instread of a double, and again twice the price,..and I swear they are a little smaller, as well.
Bag of Birds Eye mixed white and yellow corn has been 1.59 a bag for years, then went to 14 oz and up 50 cents yesterday was now 10.4 oz and 2.77, fresh broccoli is cheaper.
Shrinkflation is here for sure.
I make my own bread, sausages of all kinds and English style back bacon. Doing so saves a lot and I mean a lot of money and the product is far superior to what you can find in the shops. Please refrain from telling me that you don’t have time, look at how many hours a week you waste watching dumb TV shows!
Same here. Everything from scratch, but I don’t have a working television. LOL.
I also cook almost everything from scratch. And there is a television in my kitchen, connected to a DVD player, so I can watch and rewatch favorite movies while cooking or baking. No actual live TV – don’t need it with all the Internet streaming.
Sundance is right about the citrus. I went looking today at the most economical of my three local chain groceries for orange, lemon, and vanilla extracts for baking. The least expensive were McCormick – I seem to remember there was some issue with the company, but I had to buy them anyway, because the others were “boutique” brands I had never heard of. And boutique meant sticker shock. The large bottle of boutique vanilla extract – probably no more than 4 oz though I didn’t check – was $25. The McCormick was $8.
Oh, the citrus – 2 oz bottles of orange and lemon extract, one $3, one $2.50.
Yes, I’ve noticed very big increases on any processed food, including frozen meatballs and smoked sausages, hot dogs, deli meats….. and the downsizing from 16 oz to 12 oz, also noticed.
So far, my countermeasure has been to switch to fresh meat (whatever is on sale, and build my menu around that) and fresh rather than frozen vegetables, again on sale but sometimes frozen is what’s on sale.
Cutting out more junk food — good on the wallet as well as for health.
Just a lot more price scrutinizing than I’ve done in decades, and going back to my old belt-tightening strategies — “on sale with a coupon” is often a good route to take. Shopping the perimeter, making things from scratch, choosing cheaper alternatives, doing without, keeping a well-stocked pantry, planning meals and using up leftovers creatively.
Exactly how we’ve always done it here. Buy the best sale prices across stores and stock up. The longer we do it, the better we get since familiarity with best prices per item category really sinks in over time. Learned long ago we get better prices this way than we can at Costco or Sam’s Club. Not as convenient as a club but better pricing in the long run.
Well done and great advice!!!
Don’t ever think of yourself as a hoarder.
I told my wife last summer buy toilet paper and paper towels.
She bought a 3 year supply and the girl at the register thought I was crazy.
Who’s crazy now?
Wondering if the White House will boast about the cost of a hot dog this July.
I recall that 16 cents the Xiden admin claimed we saved last 4th of July holiday, grrrrrr……..
This is great, being on food stamps, does not bother me! </sarc>
25% increase on EBT cards for those who don’t like to work for a living.
5.9% increase on SS for those who did work for a living. Aggregate annual increase already used.
And as grocery prices rise, employees need raises to pay them which causes another push to inflation.
And that’s how we end up in an inflationary spiral. We have $30T in debt and have become a debt-based economy, so we can’t expect the Fed to do what it would take to cool inflation. Sigh.
It doesn’t take a psychic to see Cat Food cans becoming more prevalent in US landfills.
Thanks, Joe.
Cat food at my grocery is nonexistent.
There is something going on with cat food that they do have in stores. My cats used to love certain canned cat food. The last couple of times I bought it they would not eat it. I had noticed that it did not have the same smell it used to. Actually had no smell at all. The use by date on the package was ok but something definitely is off. I also bought cool whip and when I opened the container it looked like a sponge. My concern is that they are throwing any old product on the shelves just to have something to sell.
I have had the same experience with cat food, but thought I was imagining it! My cats quit eating the can food I have always given them, and it’s the only brand they will eat…..they now turn their noses up at it
Thank you for mentioning this
What brand cat food was it?
my cat will eat plain (human-grade) tuna, which is still fairly cheap — cheaper than canned cat food.
Be careful with too much tuna.
A lot of salt in the can and not a lot of vitamins like taurine.
Hard on their kidneys.
If you can afford it get the cheapest chicken and cook that , much better for kitty.
Cat food and cat litter is always out, or the stores have very few products on the shelves….. at every store where I live……even Tractor Supply
If you can find them. Friends who own cats saying cat food supply has been tight for a while now.
For pet food, go a bit out of your way and find a farm coop or other farm store. Around here it is Rural King and Tractor Supply. They have an aisle for each critter: cats, dogs, horses, chickens and more. Actually, 5 aisles for dogs at Rural King. If your horse needs deworming, they have that.
LOL
and if that dewormer can double as a ‘rona early therapeutic, a double win!
Orscheln too…last time I checked (last month), ours was well stocked with pet food.
Well, I guess cats will be what they used to be….catch mice.
I didn’t need to buy a cat. There’s a couple volunteer cats from the countryside monitoring my barns. Not a mouse or rat in sight.
Better for the equipment since no mice to chew the wires and urinate causing rapid rust.
That’s what cats were born to do, destroy vermin.
Why do you think the Egyptians worshipped them.
Keep the mice from eating up the grain in storage.
I told my husband if the dry food gets hard to find we can start shooting crow and tell the cats “taste like chicken”. They are all outside cats (35 acres) and we already have no snakes, mice or rats. Still have moles from time to time though.
Just a question – I don’t have cats; can’t get one because I have seven dogs. I have cooked for my dogs for 20 years – basically whatever meat is on sale (that would be chicken or pork) and rice. It’s cheaper than high quality dog food if you buy meat on sale and rice in bulk, plus you know what they’re getting. And my dogs never have health problems. I sometimes add some other things to be sure I get vitamins and minerals, but those are the basic ingredients day in and day out. Couldn’t cat owners just feed their cats meat? I can get chicken thighs for 89 cents a pound on sale on a regular basis – I’d think that would be cheaper than commercial cat food?
I raw feed the dog. Its getting more expensive but i find odd cuts most city americans would turn their nose at. Basically my dog eats like a foreigner.
I feed raw so he does get his nutrients. Chicken,du k, and rabbit bones from the meat i buy provide calcium. His vitamins come from organs and sardine/mackeral.
You can do the same for your cat. Kibble is garbage food quite literally canned food is not much better
Yup.
And they live longer and healthier lives.
Very sparse for at least a year in NE NC. Had to resort to Amazon for canned food. Thankfully TSC has had good supply of dry cat food.
Blame Biden policies starting with his shutting down producing fossil fuels in the United States. With Biden’s higher energy prices, everything costs more to produce. Did those who voted for Biden vote to pay more for everything? If so, they got their wish and all of us have to suffer for it! There is no current alternative plan to replace fossil fuel so the high prices will continue for years to come! people say solar, wind, batteries, garbage, but none of this produces enough energy to run the country!
And the Democrats have their election issue.
More welfare/food stamps/ subsidies for the poor.
And the radical Left will want price controls or rationing.
When the Republicans complain or object, the Democrats get to exclaim about who cares about the poor?
So easy.
Yet another data point, affirming that we can not AFFORD to wait or depend on politics, to achieve a correction.
The Convoy leaders put out a a since scrubbed youtube video, calling for a Worldwide general strike.
It was authentic, the faces were ones we recognise.
So, call in sick; covid, sprained ankle, whatever.
Show your support to those have cheerfully “given their all” to fight for ALL of us, and are now asking us to make a small sacrifice, to show the enemy our strength.
The enemy likes “collectivism” and purports to champion “the Working man and woman”?
Lets SHOVE it, where the sun don’t shine!
I think that Canadians should start withdrawing their money from the banks. That could be fun.
be careful what you wish for
Rumors of 3 Canadian banks offline tonight and inaccessible. Pretty frightening.
General strike to start on February 21st for 7 days.
We’ll see what happens.
Yes, they said everyone, no matter job they have, should twist an ankle or have the flu starting this Monday the 21st all over the world. Take a week off from work everywhere for every profession and every business. That is how you stand up for the truckers.
Because, freedom IS NOT FREE!
We all need to stand together, lest we fall apart. The greatest D nightmare is our unity.
Vote Zimbabwe, get Zimbabwe.
Only in this case, we didn’t even vote for it.
So here is a genuine crisis the left can exploit. Some because they want to collapse the system. Others through willful denial of socialist reality. A double edged crisis because even the low info demographic will have some residual capacity to link the left with what they are now experiencing. The kneejerk left always doubles down. More vote fraud and more socialism via price and wage controls.
The oligarch/crime faction of the left may already working out arrangements with the GOP on how to do nothing while giving time for the left to recover.
I hate Democrats with a white hot passion! Then again, there aren’t many on our side who are lifting a finger to fix this either. I think it’s about time we the people got to pick the GOP leadership.
You can pick the GOP leadership.
Vote in the Republican primary. That is a requirement for attending your precinct convention.
Attend your precinct convention and get somebody to nominate you as a delegate to the next step up which is either your county or state senatorial district convention. Try to become a delegate to your state’s GOP convention. That is where your state’s RNC committeeman and committeewoman are elected. As a delegate, you vote. In Texas, there are only a few thousand Republicans who come together to make the decision about who our two RNC members are.
You most likely will be displacing serious RINOs all along your journey.
I am rather proud of myself. There isn’t anything in that picture that my family consumes.
Thank you. Same here. And for what I spend in a grocery store they would have gone belly up long ago.
Our family does not use any of those products either but the restaurants use Heinz products.
.
We will likely eat out much less.
Same except for Claussen Dill Pickles. Love them, but easy to replace w/a different brand if needed. Now if they make Hellman’s Real Mayo, that’s a deal breaker!😁 (first world problems) Thankful & blessed.
Try Blue Dot, from what I understand it’s the same thing. different pkg.
Also Best Foods, the same as Hellman’s Real Mayo which I’ve never seen on a shelf in the Southwest.
Same boat…
We dropped Kraft-Heinz a number of years ago.
We run a 40’x60′ kitchen garden each year and can the produce. Have done so for about three decades.
We buy beef – black-baldy, grass fed, grain finished- by the half+ cow at a time. Fish and fowl are bought in bulk, then vacuum sealed . And we generally stock up when on other necessities when the prices are good.
Although I’ve not hunted game in a long time, I live where I can sit at the back of the house, and scope a couple of hundred yards across tree-lined pastures.
A good ole boy once observed, “A Country Boy Can Survive“.
I’d be proud too except for the Philadelphia Cream Cheese. Nothing else though.
There was quite a shortage of it in the fall but I lucked on a big supply and I find it lasts a really long time.
Also, today for the first time in about 2 months, the low-fat cheese was back at Market Basket. Also the “baby” white mushrooms. I must have hit them at exactly the right time – all the shelves were being stocked.
Pro tips ;
Get your veggie seeds for the garden now.
Get your fertilizer now. ( I got 3 bags 12-12-12 and 3 bags 34-0-0) 2 months ago, approx. 6 years worth)
Start a compost pile or just keep your chopped leaves in a pile and till them in come spring like I do.
Raid the neighbors horse stall clean out pile
Every little bit will help no matter how small your garden
We are doing our first raised bed square foot garden along with several felt bags of tomatoes etc, so far so good except for the freezes we keep getting probably a few more cold snaps here in FL then things will be fine.
I have just finished 5 new raised beds. 4 are 3×6 and one 3×12. Saved chopped leaves from the fall. Thanks for the fertilizer reminder. I don’t like to keep it for more than a season though as it picks up moisture and gets funky. That amount you bought is typical spring use. I have 2 acres m/l of yard and wife has huge flowerbeds. I need to learn how to eat grass clippings.
me too!
three 4 x 8 x 2h
two round 42in dia, 17 in tall
five 2 x8 17 in tall
two double stack things 5 cubic feet capacity
I went to town on Vego zincalume’s (or aluzinc if you prefer)
Turn your lawn into a garden. Plant fruit shrubs and trees….your state horticultural extension service usually has good handouts on what are the best varieties to grow in your area. Don’t forget root crops like potatoes, beets, parsnips and carrots, also onions and turnips….some varieties of potatoes are already sold out. Look for varieties that are described as being good for long term storage and set up a spot for them….a basement usually works well for most root crops. Look into inexpensive ways to dehydrate food for long term storage or go the canning route. I use my Sun Oven for dehydrating…there’s also a method called “The Hot Car Method of Dehydrating” or you can use your conventional oven on a low temp. I have found that electric dehydrators sent my electric bill through the roof. Shop for plants, trees and shrubs that have medicinal qualities….turmeric, elderberry, comfrey, etc. Learn how about sprouting…sprouts are packed with protein and are easy to grow. Don’t underestimate herbs…parsley is good for you in so many ways. If you’re like me, the 4 legged critters will also find your garden tasty so be prepared to invest in durable fencing, taking into consideration your winter conditions. My feeble fence around my apple trees might keep a porcupine away but deer could easily walk on the frozen snow and get to the tender branches. I’ve bought giant mesh bags and covered all my shrubs and trees as an alternative to fencing.
Red 20lb monofilament fishing line surrounding your property is also effective. They cannot see it at night and shy away. Works for deer.
thanks for the info and it might work once the snow/ice is gone. Right now the deer come up my plowed driveway because the snow in the woods is too deep and has a frozen crust on top. They walked up the hill to my house…about 200′ from the road…to eat the ornamental cabbage I planted in a big pot by my front door, last fall. The area is well lit…they are so hungry, they are fearless. Their noses could smell it even though it was covered by many inches of frozen snow.
The only food I’ve grown so far is herbs – quite a few – plus a gigantic raspberry patch.
Trying rhubarb under a mesh screen (too many rabbits around) – this was the second year, got a tiny yield, may get more this time.
We may set up some raised food beds thisyear, now that I just had a yuuge pile of dead willow taken away so there’s finally room. The dead pile was also functioning as a rabbit condo.
You will eventually end up with more rhubarb than you can use. I cut up some of my rhubarb crop into chunks last year and froze it in zip-loc bags. Once defrosted, it was soft but still suitable for a mid winter treat of rhubarb crisp. I’ve read it doesn’t dehydrate well so went the frozen route. My local nursery told me its good to plant rhubarb under fruit trees. The deep tap root of the rhubarb brings up nutrients and minerals from the soil which the shallower fruit trees roots can use.
I too have raised beds as my “soil” is mostly hard gray clay and rocks. I used green hemlock boards to build my 5 beds…they’re 4’x8′ and a foot deep. I’ve successfully grown lots of veggies in them including corn. I also use giant Smart Pot grow bags for potatoes, and big round Smart Pot Bag beds for zucchini, and strawberries. I like them because they’re cheaper than building more wooden raised beds and can be easily moved around. I’ve used my giant potato Smart Pot grow bags for 3 seasons and they’re still in great shape. There’s other brands of grow bags out there, but I haven’t bought them so can’t give you any info on them.
Happy growing and I would suggest buying fertilizer now, if you can find it. My local Home Depot and feed/grain store have the Espoma brand in stock now. Many reports saying it’s getting super expensive and farmers who usually grow corn are switching to soybeans because they use less fertilizer.
What about sales taxes they go up also so more tax dollars to be wasted on keeping government employees standards and services going.
Where I live, no sales tax on food. Stuff for the farm also.
I’ve been living off the 16 cents I saved on hot dogs since last July.
Baloney Sausages: I noticed you’ve put on a lot of weight.
😁
The Fed fiddles while inflation burns.
The price of chemicals has increased so much that Kraft-Heinz might need to start making food with real ingredients.
Well done. 👌
We all need food to survive it’s essential. We can make them suffer in different ways. Find cord cutting solutions instead of cable. Boycott the entertainment industry sports movies etc. Buy from your local growers and farmers market. Anything the government does will only make it worse. FJB!
Don’t forget your local library!
Just left HEB—toothpaste extremely low, none of my hair products available, pasta extremely low, as well as soup. Did not go to cleaning products or paper goods aisles. Everything else holding its own as far as availability. Don’t have pets, so can’t speak to that. Prices are way up on some things, but not on others. The produce that I bought was reasonable, even asparagus.
Produce has been mostly available up here in blueMA except during the Week of the Container Ship Memes – fresh berries disappeared then.
I did notice, however, that berries I bought at a different chain grocery in a different town went bad really quickly – as in, they started showing mold after 2 days…
We bought 90% Silver U.S. Mint Mercury Dimes in 2017.
Up 87% as of today.
Just Sayin…
All of these inflationary issues start and end with the left’s wealth transfer involving energy. That started with the Demented Fraud scribbling EOs that crushed oil and gas production and stopping the pipeline(s). Not sure there can be enough will within the GOP to make enough difference to overcome the Fraud’s pen. It would take a clean sweep of both the House and Senate in 11/22, and impeachment of both the Fraud and the Cackling Ho to overcome the globalists damage done up to this point.

I have been suspecting that Wage and Price Controls will be in the future, which will do nothing except cause shortages and increase the rise of an already functioning underground economy.
And living in an area of small towns here in Ohio, I can tell you that an underground economy of bartering has already been happening: car repairs for fertilizer, cabinet-making for house-cleaning, etc.
The Communists want Wage and Price Controls because A. They are ignorant of History B. They are arrogant and think that History will not apply to them and C. They want CONTROL!
I don’t buy anything from Heinz or Kraft and the companies they own. I do not wish to contribute to the lifestyle of John Kerry and his idiotic, dangerous ideas.

Senate Considers Gas Tax Holiday As Prices At Pump Continue To Rise
Feb 15, 2022
https://www.forbes.com/advisor/personal-finance/gas-tax-holiday-gas-prices/
Every time you fill up, you pay a tax of 18.4 cents per gallon to the federal government. That tax money usually goes toward maintaining highways. And although your local highways surely have some potholes that could use filling, a gas tax holiday is being considered…
Great / sarc. Our roads are going to become like the roads in Venezuela.
many roads in Calif are full of potholes or repaired badly
Fill the potholes with useless uni-party politicians.
Cut out the middleman 🙂
Fill them with needles, crack pipes and masks. Lot’s of all 3 in the (once) Golden State.
Would piles of discarded masks do?
They’re for free on all the highways and byways here…

Meanwhile, plans are being laid for a new multitrillion dollar “infrastructure” package do be unveiled for the first quarter of 2023.
and by infrastructure, they mean mansions in Florida…

The best solution would be to stop buying all the processed food crap produced by Heinz and Kraft. It is completely unhealthy anyway. Why are we paying them to kill us slowly with obesity and other chronic illnesses caused by processed foods?
I agree. But people honestly don’t know that the $1 loaf of “fresh bread” is full of crap ingredients.
The fed fiddles while America burns
am I wrong to consider that car prices will go back down a year from now as there will be less buying power?
will all those chip-less cars get their chips, and experience the year long lot-rot right about that same time?
plus gas prices will be super high, right?
maybe then will be a good time to buy a big truck???
It’s not called inflation in the White House ………………… it’s called “Corn Pop”.
Thanks Joe
It’s not like these massive price increases will magically disappear before November elections. Democrats will be held totally responsible for inflation, not to mention crime and educational wokeness. I read we’re up to 30 dem House members calling it quits. I’ll bet a half-dozen donuts (can’t afford a dozen) that more dems head for the exits before summer.
Is there one thing in that brand picture that’s healthy?
I’m sick of this! What can be done?
We had the strongest economy in WORLD history not just US history and these scumbags stole it from us.
In just twelve months.
We were warned.
I supply raw materials to these guys and my products have doubled in price due to the availability of raw materials and logistics.
How are the relative prices for organic inputs?
I am curious. Thanks.
where to put savings? Housing used to be a good place during times of inflation. But if interest rates go up, inflation rises faster than wages and fuel costs go up, people have less income to put towards housing than they did previously and many may size down to smaller properties. Probably in the long run, housing will be zoom if things stabilize, but that’s an if and when. The stock market is not reflecting reality and seems manipulated. Cash will be inflated away. Any suggestions?

Anyone else?
Tangibles are the only safe bet: Things you can eat, like food; things you can use to fix broken stuff, like tools; alternative energy like solar; things you need to grow your own food (buy a small farm?); antique firearms; working firearms and ammunition, etc.
Food, and things you can barter. It’s only going up from here.
People have to live somewhere. You might try looking at houses in the starter home range to use as rentals. There are a lot of factors to take into account, but it might be worthwhile for you. Rents can move with the local housing market.
Also, my nephew owns a rental where a little old lady lives alone. It was already covered under Section 8 when he bought it. He gets paid on time every month. Once a year, the house is inspected. He is given a list of repairs, if any. This year, HUD sent him an inquiry letter asking if he might own other houses that he might wish to qualify under Section 8.
I guess Brandon Obama needs housing for the people he is having herded across our southern border.

How Canada convinced the world to eat engine lubricant. — Financial Post Sept. 15 , 2020
Canola is one of the worlds most popular edible oils , but 50 years ago you would have only found it in mechanics; shops.
( It was called RAPE-seed oil , but good luck marketing with a name like that , so the name Canola was invented. Also know about this new trend if you eat out anywhere. Restaurant oil fryers are now being ” Filtered ” to extend oil life by subcontractors using portable equipment. Add to that a chemical additive called ” CLARIFRY ” that makes the oil seem less ‘cloudy’ …. yum , yum.)
A lot of things are technically edible.
Nutritious? That is a separate question.
On December 3, 2021, I received a heating oil delivery of about 200 gallons at a price of $3.79 per gallon.
Today, I received another delivery of 200 gallons and the price was $5.05 per gallon.
The delivery driver told me he has seen the price as high as $5.75 per gallon, depending on the location.
I just dug out a bill from November 2020 and found that the price I paid back then was $2.99 per gallon.
My cost of heating oil has gone from $2.99 to $5.05 per gallon under Joe Biden.
Auwtsnae: Yes, but, think about how much more equitable you feel.
It’s a good time to also know how to make condiments such as mustard, mayo, ketchup, BBQ sauce, and then buy those base ingredients, like mustard seed or powder. We would all be healthier if we stopped buying processed foods altogether.
In other news I bought a dairy cow from a local rancher after searching high and low for a particular breed (Jersey – known for high fat from whence cometh gorgeous butter, delicious milk, and everything dairy with a little work). He told me he had never seen such high demand for dairy cows in his whole life. Another rancher I spoke with said the same thing and all their heifers were sold out (unborn calves sold out for the year too!). I suggested that “food security” was most likely driving demand. Another trend I noticed was that raw milk sellers were either closing their farms to the public and only selling to friends and family, or raising prices to keep up with demand. I’ve paid as little as $5/gal up to $14/gal for good raw milk (A2/A2). Another reason to get out of the city so you can keep a cow. The price of milk in the stores keep going up and I’ve noticed sparse shelves along with not so fresh tasting milk (besides the fact it’s over processed). A Jersey can produce 4 – 8 gallons per DAY. We can sell off farm in this state after meeting a few requirements. Just sayin’ y’all.
Born Free…: Got any suggestions about where I might find a chocolate dairy cow? Preferably dark chocolate, 85% or above.
Watch out for the cattle rustlers. Seriously. They came out during the recession. They’ll come out again.
They’ll cut a fence, load up a few animals, and be gone in no time.
Also, anybody who decides to sell livestock of any kind should insist on payment in full before the animal leaves the property.
Soon the tired kabuki theatre of congressional hearings and outrage will be upon us again. Nobody does price-hike outrage better than a liberal without a rudimentary knowledge of economics.
Haul in the CEOs and rant and rave! Show the constituents how you fight for them against greedy capitalists!
If you want inexpensive frozen vegetables, try the “Great Value” brand at Walmart. Their 12-ounce steam-in-the-bag bags of frozen veggies are still a reasonable price.
I went shopping yesterday at Walmart. Most “Great Value” 12-oz bags were between 85 cents and a dollar a bag, with a lot of bags between 85 and 89 cents.
There were enough GV veggies in stock, but not a huge amount. They were almost out of mixed vegetables.
I am predictions reductions in quality for many products. Expect premium prices for premium products.

Went in half on a whole pig with another family. The Sellers are a small family farm. They raise a few pigs a year, keep one and sell the rest, which covers their costs. It’s a beautiful system – families and small farms working together to help one another out. I used to buy meat at Costco, but the prices are crazy insane for meat. I think we figured, after all said and done, the pork would cost about $4 – 5/lb. That’s a deal for organically raised happy pigs living their best life – no hormones, no GMOs, no antibiotics. I swear the food system is what’s killing people.
Just a thought.
There isnt one thing on the list made by krap…kraft or Jobn Kerry Heinz that I buy or eat. If it isnt fresh, it isnt in my house.
P E R I O D. Divorse yourself from this garbage.
Same here..
Have you noticed the increase in the price of organic produce? I have just in the past 2 week.
“Let’s Go Brandon!”
No. “F–k Joe Biden!”
@Sundance are you taking into account the increased cost of farming inputs? Fertilizer, seed, everything is increasing. We’re going to see famine of biblical proportions this coming year in third world countries who are already hurting.
Yes
