Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Love this post! This is The BOOK! Think of all the books in the world, all these “scholarly”, “worldly” writers from then to now. All missing The Truth, The Light, The Way. Matthew 18 1At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. 6But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
How interesting Our Wonderful Lord is! His Book has all The answers, He, the Word made flesh.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Romans 8:1
AMEN
And to the ones that offer their children to the jab.
Now we’re talking!
I ran across a picture of two little boys, about 6…one black, one white…both smiling sweet sweet smiles to brighten anyone’s day, with their arms wrapped around one another.
As the caption said they had both gotten identical haircuts so that their teacher wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.
Oh that this world we live in had their innocent blindness to the differences we see but that God does not.🙏💓
My 5 year old son’s best friend was Dominic a black boy his age who lived a few houses down. Dominic was fascinated by Ricky’s stick straight, white blonde hair. “His hair is like a carwash when he says no.”
In the Toy aisle birthday shopping with Ricky, I asked “What’s Dominic like?” Misunderstanding, he frowned and said, “He’s just like me except his hair is curly.”
This was way before CRT
Oh how that goes to my heart, Barbara. Left to their own precious natures, all this deliberately taught hate wouldn’t have a chance. I’m so glad you posted that story.
👋🏿
I don’t have a wavy hand, so I’ll just say 💓
Niiiiiice.

Good morning, FC 😉.
Good morning, GrandpaM! Late start for me, but got stuck on Sundance’s Stew Peter interview with Dr Malone. Had to put my two cents in.
Good afternoon, Betsy! Just got back in from having fun with my youngest grandson. We got up this morning, cooked him pancakes, then drove to the nearest town to gas up the old hunting truck, drove to the back of the ranch (can’t believe I had never taken him there, yet), helped the ranch guy to load up a couple of tanks, and finally handed him off to grandma for a walk. Now the contractor is here measuring for the new blinds.
Retirement definitely is not for sissies.
Last night late I replied to your post.
Be blessed!
I’m so glad you had one of those memory making days. He’ll remember it when he’s grown, I’m sure. What’s better than helping Grandpa when you are 6? I can’t think of anything. 💓
The word “retirement” conjures up all sorts of visions. But we’ve found them mostly false. The trick is to find a routine that’s comfortable I think. Even if it is involves the odd interruption like your blinds😉.
I’ll check on yesterday’s thread right now. All blessings to you as well as always, G.
I was just telling wifey I may need to go back to work to catch a break. Just kidding.
I enjoy the little guy so much (actually he’s pretty tall). Get to have him for a few days since both mom and dad tested positive so he is off school until Monday and they are trying to get over it. And we get the benefit of spending memorable days.
I pray his folks will be all right🙏🙏…one for each. How lucky they are you are near. And just wait until he eventually towers over you, as mine now do. One day they were small and the next they weren’t. Of course the fact that I am shrinking makes them seem that much taller. Ah well…
Enjoy that precious grandson, G💓
We are having so much fun. His mom and dad are already feeling better. Dosed mama with Ivermectin yesterday and daddy today. He called me a couple of hours later and said it worked like magic. I imagine there was some placebo effect, too.
He still thinks I can do no wrong, ha, ha. I know better. If anytime he wants to hear the real story he needs just to ask his Mom.
🙏🏻 ❤️
Good late morning, Cat. Just perfect!
Good morning, Frank. I replied to you on yesterday’s OT late last night.
I guess I’ll circle ⭕️ back
Good morning, Frank.
Good afternoon sissy!
LOL, Frank, we called our daughter sissy when she was in high school and our youngest son was small. It stuck and even today we call her Sis.
😁!!
One day I was answering her call and a person that was close by said, “So is your sister ok?” 😂
Good morning, W_P and thank you!
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
Thank you, WP. Written for all to see.
I enjoy reading Henry Morris’ thoughts on the Bible. He was a brilliant man. One thing Morris did not mention about the genealogies in Genesis 5 and Matthew 1 is that every generation of Adam is followed by death, “and he died,” but here is NO DEATH FOUND in the generation history of Jesus Christ in Matthew one. 1 Corinthians 15:22 “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Here’s my offering for National Bird Day … the ever-elusive “Snow-Capped Nuthatch” which can only be seen in winter! 🙂 Photo taken by me.
Hello I joined BirdFeederWatch this year. Signs of bird life everywhere around me. Such a joy to behold.
Very cool Retired IG ! 🙂 What’s your favorite bird, if I may ask?
He’s gorgeous! Very similar to the great tits and blue tits in the UK. Nuthatches there have the ability to run up trees. If one can catch site of a nuthatch, it makes for fascinating watching.
And if I can’t catch sight of a Nuthatch, I might be able to know they’re on site by hearing their calls or song. In any case, they sure hatch plenty of joy! 🙂
😊They do that all right, phoenix. We had 2 peacocks in our Welsh garden. They just appeared one winter day…female and male. We named them Phoebe and Joey. The display of his feathers was magnificent. Slowly he’d spread them, then turn as if surveying his kingdom Then he’d shake them like a fan to warn off predators, of which we saw none. Just preening I’m thinking.
They used to show up at our back kitchen window and peep in. I knew they were hungry and put out dry cat food, which they thrived on.
They molted twice yearly. Over a few weeks I would find their gorgeous feathers here and there until they had none. But gradually they would reappear, and Joey at least was back to his amazing glory.
We also had pheasants drop by, but so destructive were they I hate to say my husband dispatched them from his position inside the house at our back Dutch door. They are delicious eating, but as it killed him to have to do the dressing, we gave them away to grateful recipients.
We lived rurally so the wildlife we saw was amazing. I really miss it.
Betsy – love your stories
This one reminded me of a house we had on a lake in upper Wisconsin. This Detroit born girl was pickled tink enjoying all the wildlife. We were fairly remote. Other ‘home owners’ on the lake only showed up in the summer – had a full house (so to speak) for the 4th of July.
2 short stories – there were a pair of wood ducks nesting nearby. They don’t quack – they cry, sort of like babies – wah wah.
There were also a pair of loons on the lake. We didn’t know it, but they choose a different lake each year, so they don’t return right away…. Yes, it was fun to see them carrying babies on the back as they swam.
One day I heard a funny ‘slapping on water’ sound I couldn’t identify. Got outside to see the ‘babies’ running on the water for their first flight (slap – slap – slap…). They didn’t get airborne, so the sound would change as they flopped back on the surface. Then they would try again – and again.
Well, eventually they all got airborne – and left with their hauntingly beautiful sounds.
Know what you mean about ‘missing it’
How lovely, ms idaho!! You tell your stories so well that I can just see and hear what you did myself.
Wood ducks are so beautiful. And loons have the most distinctive call. Seeing nature as you have, undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of a too noisy world really brings you (and me) closer to God. What joy there is in that!
It really was a once in a lifetime ‘gift’.
We bought 4 embden geese chicks and some baby mallard ducks. Then we found it was a problem to keep them safe from the owls. That was an adventure all by itself.
Eventually winter came. We put an aerator near shore to keep the water open for them. We were worried that their legs would get frozen in the ice.
One day hubby came home from a 24 hr ER shift to find they had gotten themselves trapped in open water away from shore. Of course, by then they were too heavy to fly back to safety, so we set out to rescue them.
How, you might ask?
We had a canoe. Hubby was in front with a hoe, pulling us forward. I was in back with a paddle. We operated as an ice breaker, giving them a path of open water. So, they ‘flew’ back to shore.
When we parked the canoe on shore and got into the house to get warm, guess who paddled via our new ‘water path’ back to open water. After that we figured if they got stuck in the ice it would be their own fault.
Happy ending. They survived the winter and laid ‘goose eggs’ on the ice. These eventually sank. We ‘rescued’ them and boy were they delicious.
ps – next summer we had more embden geese 🙂
Hope this works – pix of geese with island in the distance – where they had their babies in the summer

i don’t know how to make the pix show live, but if you click the link you can see ‘our lake’. Only 3 geese survived
Besides the boat in the pix, and the canoe, we had a raft. Put an electric motor on it, called it our ‘queen mary’, and tooled around the lake without disturbing wildlife (including residents – ha ha)
trying another pix.
This link shows 2 boats & queen mary. For some reason we never figured out, the geese spent hours with their heads in the boat while standing on the raft. you can see the ducks. swimming – they also loved to sit on the raft.

Yes!!! Hahaha!!! Queen Mary😂. Wonderful! How funny are those geese?? I’m glad you managed to get those posted. Those have made my evening🤗
What a beautiful story!! You and your hubby are my kind of people💓 We’d have done the same. Neither of us can bear animal suffering. And bonus! Eggs! Free range. Yum! My sister in law has a property in Wales with chickens from which they get plenty of eggs. It’s a job to find them as the property is large with stables and out houses (which has a completely different meaning from those here).
I love reminiscing and I love hearing other’s stories. Simpler times…sigh…

Great story, dear Betsy! The deer that live around our house come and knock on the windows if we are late with the corn. They do enjoy all of my wife’s flowers. 🙂
Winter deer in Wisconsin 1990 ish
What a Christmas card that would make. Oh MY!
😁
Gourmands! I’m glad you feed those impatient creatures. I’ll feed any and all who show up here. My heart is too soft.
Your birds have certainly been colorful characters, Betsy jones ! Posh peacocks prefer cat food … sounds fitting! 🙂 As for the pheasants, while I personally think they’re too pretty to eat, I have enjoyed the opportunity of feasting on quail.
I can’t eat them either, though I did one time as I was a guest where they were served. The same with lamb, as our Welsh home was surrounded on all sides by sheep. In the spring, the lambs spoiled me for ever eating any. So precious, though as they grew they weren’t. It was a treat watching the border collies work the herds. And in August there were sheepdog trials on an immense estate in the hills not far from us called the Vivod, which also bred thousands of pheasants every year. We used to divert there on the way home just to ogle them and all the rabbits which ran amongst them. Glorious.
What a marvelous conversation this has been, all for the posting of one tiny nuthatch!💓
In Britain, bird watchers are called “Twitchers”. There are so many lovely feathered creatures there indigenous to those Isles. You would be in Bird Watching Heaven seeing them.
There is the most delightful movie for you as a bird lover. Steve Martin in THE BIG YEAR. Sweet and gentle, about a competition between a dedicated group of bird lovers to find and document sightings of the most unusual and hard to locate birds. It is an absolute joy I feel you’d appreciate.
Beautiful!
It’s so interesting to look at the colour differences between males and females. The “girls” much less bright for obvious reasons. All God’s handiwork.
Thank you very much, Lonestar! 🙂
Very nice, we like to feed the little birds. 🙂
I am a fanatical feeder of birds, especially in the winter months. How could I not be? Come one, come all I say.💓
Bird feeding is awesome! My dad made the best birdfeeder … it was a wooden box with a roof, floor, and three walls. So the birds could eat in shelter from rain, wind, and snow, but with one side of the box completely open, they could also get in and out easily, fit more than one, and provide those of us watching with a great view. We also placed food on top of picnic tables and on the ground to attract more species. At one point, we had a family of Ring-Necked Pheasants that would come regularly as ground feeders.
Which type of birds are your favorite, the Blue Jay by any chance? Judging by your name … 🙂
My husband constructed a feeder just like your dad’s. And how funny!! I just described the pheasants we had in my post above before I saw yours.
There was a huge estate called the Vivod just outside our village that bred pheasants for shoots. On occasion, we’d drive off the main road up into the Welsh hills and onto the vast acreage just to see them, so beautiful were they. It was a common sight on this scenic route to see families of rabbits amongst their feathered comrades as well.
Truly a gorgeous diversion for nature lovers such as we are.
We also had thieving magpies. Big and beautiful really. And there is a little poem recited by children there.
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.
One always hoped for the seeing of two. But when spotting just the one, it was a must to stand there and salute him and say, “Good morning, Mr Magpie!”
Little quixotic ceremonies that I became quite fond of and miss very much.
Magpies are pretty cool …
They really are.
Not a fan of the blue jay they terrorize my blueberries. We have loads of fun feeding humming birds, finches.
Hummingbirds and finches … elegant! And blueberries are definitely worth preserving …
Love the hummers. They can suck down a bottle of sugar water in no time. And they fight like crazy.
They’re a noisy lot as well. The British jays are a lovely cappuccino brown with deep black pointings and just the tiniest hint of baby blue. And a lot less chatty. That’s the renowned British reserve I think.
Wow, look how blue he looks! I commend you on the close-up!
Thank you very much, Slowcobra! This shot was actually taken with a zoom lens through the window of a Nature Center with rocking chairs and a cozy fireplace.
Hey! That’s beautiful. I’ll share this with my wife.
Thank you for your kind encouragement, Frank!
They’re so cute. Especially when they puff and stretch their wings out to stake their claim to the best seat around the feeder
Became a bird watcher when retired. Learned much by observing how the bird world operates. Their defensive tactics, sounds of alarm, gladness and mourning. All working together in unison.
No, I didn’t get a federal grant for the study😉
Do search for the movie I recommended above, Cat. Delightful.
I listen for birdsong. Our mockingbirds have quite the repertoire. Once I stood and counted the different melodies, one after another. I heard 21 before I had to go back inside. Unbelievably sweet each one and no two alike.
Yup. Love them!
They definitely are feathery little balls of cuteness! 🙂
Pilated woodpecker. First time I spied it I thought it was woody’s dad. They are magnificent
Hoping you get a photo, the ones in my forest are very camera shy.
I love woodpeckers / flickers as well, especially Red-Headed Woodpeckers. And one day I was truly blessed to find the actual yellow shaft feather of a Yellow-Shafted (aka Northern) Flicker along a nature trail! Sounds like I would LOVE it where you live! We had Great-Horned Owls in the neighborhood where I grew up … it’s hooting traveled quite a ways in the middle of the night.

Please pardon the double-post above … Discovered that for some strange reason when I go in to edit, my post duplicates itself … Now the 20 minute editing window is gone, and so is my lunch hour! 🙂
Beautiful picture. I enjoy these little beauties all winter long. I live in the woods and feed them in cold weather. It has not been very cold til now so have not had all the cold weather birds yet. I love watching them all. Thank you for posting this picture.
The woods in the winter…so quiet you can hear the birds from far away. Once i imitated, not well- just got the beat right, a bird call early am,.a “black” bird flew overhead to investigate who was up as early as it was.🙃
I think this is a song about redemption. Catching that “midnight train to Georga” is a statement of finality, a statement of a search for freedom.
When you do something like this you are closing some doors and opening other doors. But . . . is your return going to be welcomed? Is what you are returning to the same as what you left? In a lot of experiences it is just that—you find yourself enfolded in the culture you left behind. It’s still there, still just as you thought it would be. If this happens, then it is one of life’s great returning experiences. Let us wish whoever Gladys had in mind when she wrote finds that old reality . . .
ab_channel=GladysKnightTPVEVO
“Leaving on a Midnight Train to Georgia” has always been such a relaxing song that even now when I try to concentrate on the meaning of the lyrics, eventually I just end up enjoying the song for the instrumentals and hear / interpret the singing voice as melody / notes rather than words, with the “I’d rather live in his world Than live without him in mine” breaking through as being an intriguingly nice and sentimental, cool-sounding turn of phrase.
🙂
Love it. Thanks. 🙂
CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

“The stony soil of our heart, the rock foundation of our corrupt human nature, need not, therefore, be the basis for judgment upon us. It can be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus, just as the hill of Golgotha was when drops of blood fell upon it and it was transformed from a place of execution to the Rock of Atonement.”
― Bo Giertz, The Hammer of God

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow, that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ.
AMEN.
We all need to polish our armour now.

✟
“O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.”
Psalms 96:1 (KJV)
https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/verse-of-day.php
Beautiful song, thanks for posting!
If you get stuck like those people on I-95 and are in need, look for a big truck with a sleeper.
I carry a minimum of five days of food and drink in my big truck at all times. Lots of other truckers do the same. I also carry spare clothing and bedding. So if you happen to be stuck like that and are in need, look for a big truck with a sleeper to see if the driver can help. They may also be better informed because many have TVs in their rigs.
Big trucks for OTR use generally have a minimum of 200 gal useable fuel capacity. Idling they use about 1 gallon per hour of fuel. Some, like mine, have idle management. I have a whole extra battery bank under the utility deck of the tractor for environmental control. It runs the Webasto heater. That heater is like a little electrically fired furnace burning diesel fuel and will only use about 1 gallon of fuel in 10 hours even in very cold conditions. When the battery bank drops below a certain voltage the engine automatically fires up and idles until it’s recharged.
Other big trucks have APUs that are single piston diesels that provide all the power and heat they need.
So like I said. You get stuck and are in dire straits, then look for the big trucks with sleepers.
That’s as practical as it gets. Thanks rah!
God bless you Rah.
Colorado Eisenhauer Tunnel live. Yuck
My father was a long hauler, but this not what I want to tell you.My daughter drove back to MO. from Ca. to attend collage. I was very worried about her driving alone, so a trucker friend put out a call for all the truckers to look out for her license plate no.When she stopped at a rest stop to sleep, she woke up to the truckers staring at her. I love truckers, they are the best.
America at its best, sandra, and the best are our truckers. What a brilliant story about her guardian angels💓
Awesome and generous advice, Rah!
You’re definitely more prepared than I am.
Though I will say, having grown up in the Buffalo, NY area, I always have winter hats, extra coat, gloves, and scarves in the car! Along with a sleeping bag and blanket, and cowboy boots and a helmet in case I want to stop off and go trail riding somewhere. As well as a snow shovel … all year long! 🙂
I always travel with food and water, but should really keep extra packed away.

FC, I’ve heard that there are different batches for different age groups. Even color coded. Don’t know if true or not but if it is, the suspicios cat in me gets very suspicious. Trying to kill the older folks first… Hmm
Saw an explanation of sorts, we’re lab rats. Being studied with varying forms of shots, different ingredients and percentages of ingredients.
We didn’t volunteer for this. The color coded and classification of batches for different age groups is a new one for me.
IMO we always felt we were being culled. It’s another being validated.
Hang in the grandpa. We’ll give em hell on earth.
Hmmm…rage on into the night….shaking my cane.
😃
No, we didn’t FC. God willing, I plan to learn how to reload and have my collection of jabs in response to theirs. Mine are administered by a remote device.
Oh boy that’s the truth, G!! Remember the evil Ezekiel Emmanuel…he who says 75 years is enough for you and me…sits on the Covid Committee.
These demon possessed creatures infuriate me so much. See my response to FC above. Maybee I should start making some silver-tipped jabs.
Oooooo now there’s an appropriate thought!
I saw this. Good on you for posting. Information is power!

Good Morning ms Idaho!
Back at’cha
It is a good morning- no new snow, warmer than it’s been, windy – and best of all hubby and I got up this morning.
With God as my Co Pilot I get to work thru another day.
Oh – Just spotted the post below from Lonestar – Good Morning Lonestar
Good morning, ms idaho! I got distracted by Sundance’s late post from yesterday. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

We ended the year with the same DNA we started with
Don’t ‘cha just LOVE it!
Do I ever!! 👍!!!
Good morning, Ms Idaho. I enjoy your pilot stories.
Thank you
Glad I can brighten your day
Meetooo!
Morning, Treepers!
Am so grateful for all of you faithful posters who show up here everyday. Some days, this Treehouse is my only connection to the outside world. God bless you all.
Good Morning Lonestar ☀️
I, too, am very very grateful for the eclectic blend of the treehouse!
Thanks for saying what is in my heart, out loud ❤️
It is the most soul comforting place in existence I do believe.🙏😊
Morning, FC.
I find it so comforting, LS, to show up here every day and find friends ready to start their day. I worry if I see familiar names missing. It’s our coffee corner where we check in and catch up. I’m so glad to see yours!😊💓
Thank you , Betsy. Top o’ the mornin’ to you.
😊💓
I share your sentiments betsy, and enjoy all here with regularity.
Good afternoon, Slowcobra.
So comforting with all the familiar “faces”. I love them all😊
Good afternoon, Lonestar.
There are a whole lot of us who show up but don’t post too often or in every thread.
This Open Thread has grown in the total number of comments over the past month or so.
It’s one of my first places to read when I open CTH in my browser, no matter what time of day I start browsing.
It has grown immensely. A gathering of like souls no matter how frequently or not, GB. It’s a joy to see it.
For your Wednesday Morning frivolous Entertainment: Come Fly With me
Takeoff – the act of getting an aircraft from the ground into the air
Every airplane has a preflight walk around check list. I always loved this check list from an early biplane:
Jenny check list – 1917 – Biplane JN4D – Aviation knowledge – safety
1. Inspection – it is best NOT to inspect it. If you do, you’ll never get in it.
2. Climbing into the cockpit after you haven’t inspected your airplane. Do not attempt to enter the cockpit in the usual way – if you put your weight on the lower wing panel, it’s gonna fall off – and besides, your foot might go thru that wing panel, which usually sprains the ankle.
3. The instrument panel. A thorough preflight of the instruments is necessary. After having carefully lowered yourself into the seat and groped in vain for the safety belt (which has been removed) look at the instruments – both of them. The one on the right is a tachometer. It doesn’t work. (That’s hand written in the margin) The other one is the altimeter. That functioned perfectly until 1918, when the hands came off. (Again, noted in the margin) Look at them right now, because after you start the engine, you can’t see them.
4. Warming up the engine. Please (in capitol letters) do not warm up the engine. It has only a few minutes to run anyway, and the longer it’s on the ground, that’s the less flying time. After the throttle has been opened, do not expose any portion of yourself beyond the edge of the cowling. It is no fun to have your face slapped by flying rocker arms.
5. The flight. After you have dodged thru the trees, the windmills, the chimneys, until you’re over a lake, you will see a large hole in the left side of the fuselage. The hole is to allow the stick to be moved far enough to make a left turn. Never make a turn to the right.
6. The landing. The landing is made in accordance with the laws of gravity. If the landing gear doesn’t collapse on the 1st bounce, don’t worry – it’s bound to on the second. After you’ve extracted yourself, chew some gum and then walk away.
Never run away from a Jenny.
Our ‘normal’ takeoff in a small (2, 4 or 6 seater) airplane: taxi onto the runway, and line up with the centerline. Apply full throttle, steer with the rudders to maintain direction, apply slight back pressure to the wheel. This produces a slight ‘nose high’ attitude, allowing the nosewheel to lift free of the ground as you gain speed.
The wings have a curved top, so the air flowing over them has a lower pressure than below. Below the wings there is denser air, as it is trapped between the wings and the ground. When sufficient speed has been reached, the airplane will lift free of the ground.
Yup – its as simple as that – unless, of course, the wind is to the side, gusty and strong. Time for a go-no go decision is past. Contrary to what you might believe, the take off is actually the time you are most vulnerable. The ground is near, the airspeed is slow and in many cases the places available to land are few. Pre flight planning and pilot alertness to changing circumstances, are all important considerations. In the event of a problem, options are limited. Decisions must be made quickly and correctly.
A multi engine (2 or more engines) take off is similar – EXCEPT:
Multi engine airplanes have 2 critical speeds for safe takeoff. The lower number is the lowest safe speed allowed. (measured by wind speed, not ground speed). The higher number is also a safety number. If you have lifted off after attaining the lower speed, but if there is a problem AND you are below the 2nd speed, you MUST abort the take off. Continuing the flight is not an option.
During my time at the FAA headquarters in DC, one of the projects I got involved with was ‘minimum equipment requirements for a multi engine airplane take off. That seemed an easy rule to write. The ‘team’ consisted of a pilot, a mechanic, an avionics specialist and a specialist writer of rules. We all knew what we meant by minimum operational equipment.
The rulemaking ‘team’ had been working on it for a long time before I became involved Several years later I had the occasion to visit – and they still had not been able to write the rule.
The thing that was so hard to articulate was that under normal circumstances you would not take to the air with parts malfunctioning. Except – what did it matter that the airplane was equipped with (malfunctioning) de icing equipment and you were going to fly it on a clear, sunny, warm day – and had NO INTENTION of getting into icy clouds. We all understood that if the airplane had 2 engines you would not try to take off with only 1 working. And those examples are only 2 of the many permutations of ‘inoperable equipment’ on a multi engine airplane that are possible. Some malfunctions affected how the airplane ‘flew’, and some malfunctions affected the flight and weather conditions that applied at the time of take off (storms vs clear skies for example).
Of course, the FAA could not look to the airplane manufacturer for guidance – the owner probably added equipment after manufacture. And you could not leave a decision this important to a mere pilot. How could the pilot be expected to determine if it was ‘safe’ for takeoff – given little things like weather, flight importance, maintenance needs and other factors?
In addition to actions the pilot takes to get ready for takeoff, there are other factors involved. The runway for instance. Is it grass? Is it gravel? Gravel will put some really big pits in a fast spinning propeller, knock it off balance and perhaps imperil the flight.
The runway may be paved, but how high is it above sea level? Very high temperatures, especially combined with heavy loads, can mean an airplane might use a lot of runway gaining enough speed for takeoff. Um – it is important to be airborne before reaching the end of the available runway – and you want to have enough speed and altitude to avoid hitting anything near the end of the runway.
Regardless of runway surface, a pilot has to consider the surrounding area. Are there tall trees close to the airport? Power and / or telephone lines? Taking off from Denver’s original airport was always a challenge – especially if you wanted to go west. The Front Range is a wall waiting to trap unwary pilots. You had to coordinate with the Air Traffic Controller and fly North, South or East to gain lots of altitude, before heading West. PS – Denver is already at 5000 ft above sea level. Summer temperatures do get warm. It might take a LONG time to get high enough to cross the mountains. In addition to the heights marked on the aviation chart, you need to be several thousand feet higher to be safe. That’s where knowing how to find rising air really helps a low performance airplane.
I was fortunate enough to fly and obtain a sea plane rating. They have their own set of take off and landing kinds of fun. There are a couple of important lessons seaplane pilots learn if they want to survive.
1. It is possible to land on a relatively small body of water – but maybe not possible to take off from that spot (leaving you stranded)
2. An amphibious plane has wheels that go up and down. Wheels UP to land on water, wheels DOWN to land on terra firma. Many experienced pilots feel they don’t need an ‘after takeoff’ or a ‘pre landing’ checklist. However, there are consequences.. Landing on water with the wheels down (because you forgot to pull them up after takeoff) is sure to result in an ‘ass over teakettle’ devastating accident.
Takeoff in a seaplane, especially a low power, single engine float plane, can be very challenging. You would think that a calm lake would be easy. Nope. The pontoons ‘stick’. Waves are a little better, but not much. The pilot may have to raise one pontoon out of the water to get ‘unstuck’. Another technique is to ‘pop’ the flaps – to get more lift – to ‘pop’ the plane off the water. Then you have to fly in ‘ground effect’ until you have enough speed to raise the flaps and gain altitude.
And, as mentioned above, you may not have enough space available to gain enough speed to get airborne.
rah’s description of fully loaded gliders during WWII being’snatched’ off the ground and flown to altitude left me breathless. I can only imagine that the pilot must have worn a hard hat and been braced against the back of the seat. Because when the ‘tow’ plane flew by to snag the glider tow rope it would be flying in excess of 100 mph. So the glider would go from 0 to 100 or more in the blink of an eye.
While the pilot responsibility for the safety of flight involves a lot of pre flight planning, IMHO, transitioning from the ground to the air has to be the most interesting and challenging feature of flying.
Teaching preflight planning involves many tasks for the pilot to complete. Will this be a local flight? Will there be more than the pilot on board? How much gas is needed? Will there be luggage (or hunting trophies) to carry? How will the weather affect the flight – winds aloft drastically affect the time needed to make the flight. Will the flight be in the vicinity of large airports (to be avoided) or restricted airspace? How should the weight of passengers and cargo be distributed (weight and balance calculations)? Check aircraft log books (rental) for maintenance records. Preflight planning has a lot in common with the rule we were trying to write about minimum equipment on a multi engine airplane – the pilot has to ensure that he has operable equipment for the planned flight.
Ah – but the reward. Once you are airborne, slipped the surly bonds of earth, you are next-door to Heaven.
Thanks, ms idaho, always an enjoyable read.
A lot of bashing of overweight people has been going on, surrounding the covid scamdemic.
Here’s a little bit of empathy:

mornin treepers. in thinking about multi culturalism vs monoculture I come across two music videos that demonstrate to me the beauty of both. maybe a genius can load these videos for us. one is set in Barcelona and is an advert for a bank.
it is SOM SABADEL FLASHMOB. sure it is a setup but those people watching know the words even the guy hoisting a cold one in the blue/grey shirt starts singing it(yes, I know, he may be chairman of the board of the bank.)
juxtapose that video with Billy Joels ITS JUST A MATTER OF TRUST official video where they open the windows and there is New York the way we knew it multiculture at its best. love the “shut up” lady
Deliver us from evil has never been more important.
Deliver us Lord from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin, and protect us from all anxiety, as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Thank you, sc, for that simple powerful prayer🙏
It really does cover everything.
Have you seen this from Jon McNaughton?
The Magnificent Seven – 10×15 Litho – McNaughton Fine Art (jonmcnaughton.com)
I love all of his sketches – but this painting is something else. From Jon:
“The Magnificent Seven” by Jon McNaughton
There have been 46 US Presidents since George Washington: some good, others not so much. As the artist, I decided to put together my team of the most magnificent seven Presidents. How did I choose this motley crew? Each was loved and hated for different reasons, but all stood against the establishment and to fight for American ideals. These are – The Magnificent Seven!
Left to right: Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, George Washington, Donald Trump, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy

Great devotional this morning.
I go to Bible Gateway each morning to read Spurgeon.
Thanks much 🤟
This.
I have watched a clip of the insurance company CEO from Indiana. One thing really bothered me. Near the end he said that insurance rates will have to be raised in counties where vax rates are low because that is a risk factor. Now, he hasn’t really said whether vax/no_vax is related to the increase in deaths. His suggestion that low vax rate is a factor should be a caution to us. It is possible that the increase in deaths/disability is from the jabs and they are covering it up, but we just don’t know yet. He didn’t say that the increases are happening in unvaxxed people.
