Folks, this story is not from The Onion or any version of sarcastic media. This is very real.
To meet the compliance standards of the Paris Climate Accords and the subsequent treaty that all EU nations agreed to, they must reduce carbon emissions in freight and transit systems. They have spent thousands of hours pouring over possible solutions and will begin the test phase next month.
Bloomberg News – At the start of next year, the Ville de Bordeaux, a 154-meter-long ship that moves aircraft components for Airbus SE, will unfurl a 500 square meter kite on journeys across the Atlantic Ocean. It will undergo six months of trials and tests before full deployment.

While the industry has come up with multiple decarbonization initiatives, it is struggling to keep pace with goals set out under the Paris Agreement on climate. There’s also pressure on shipping lines from large customers who are pressing to make their own supply chains less polluting. (read more)
Yes my friends, the extremely well educated scientists, physicists, climatologists, sustainability engineers and cross functional decarbonization problem solvers for the planetary saving climate justice agenda, have invented…. wait for it….
….Sailboats!

wood and other biomass is “renewable”. What if we burned it and use the heat to make steam and then powered our engines with steam? That would be a huge advancement!
Dammit Charles! I should have all of the replies before I created my post about Steve Fulton and steam ships. You beat me to the punch…
Oil and natural gas are renewable, too. Just expand your time frame
…old wells blocked in for decades ‘recharge’ and are able to be returned to production…
Ya, just like my great-grandpa did back on the farm in the 1910s.
Failed windmill technology from Denmark check, Vlad the Impaler type sails, what’s next liberals out houses? Oh look it’s the progressives version of a 19th century sailing ship.
Keep in mind while the failed windmill tech is from Denmark, so is Maersk, the world’s largest shipping company. Would it be so surprising if Maersk has plotted to increase the need to have more ships by reverting to wind power? Who shipped all those windmills???
They just imprisoned a woman for banning child marriages… right? I did just see that in the news.
Next: we return to 1970’s-90’s China and everyone rides a bike.
“Easier for roads, easier for air, easier for you and I!! Let’s all sing… ‘Together we ride, for the people….’ “
$900 subsidies for e-bikes. JaBiden never heard of just peddling.
No need for outhouses. We’ll just do in our diapers like the pResident.
I don’t have any engineering degree that would qualify me to make a definitive estimate on the size of the sail area needed to use wind power to move a loaded 154 meter (approximately 450 feet waterline???) ship across the oceans, but large sailing ships used to do it until fossil fueled ships began to be more cost effective from the standpoint of time and actually sailing miles needed for taking because of wind shifts. But I guess we can go back to the days of the Clipper ships and the vagaries and dangers of those days.
I suspect it will take a lot of Yankee ingenuity to deploy huge sails without multiple masts and without larger crews than todays cargo ships if it can be done at all. The demo picture shows what amounts to a huge spinakker deployed downwind of a modern steel cargo ship, but unfortunately the wind doesn’t always blow from that direction.
I wonder if they will feel the need to have some onboard cannons to ward off pirates that are still using fast fossil fueled boats to board ships for loot and ransom.? It’s going to be fun to watch the ‘greenies” go back to the future.
A 500 square meter kite is approximately the size of one U.S. basketball court, about 20m x 25m. You would hardly ‘see it’ in the picture above.
The Clippers established the then newfound United States of America as a significant player in what was then ‘global trade’…in fact sailing ships and the accompanying trade funded the then young nation which rose up against it’s oppressors and emerged triumphant…even the King of England gave a slow clap and a bow to the bold ‘upstarts’….and sailing ships is one of the things the then Americans did very very well…I am not saying wind power is the cats meow…I prefer natural gas for most energy applications…just that wind should not be dismissed offhand….
There ARE advantages to using kites, instead of sails, for sailing “yachts”.
Sails require a KEEL, heavily weighted, to keep the mast and sail from tipping the ship over.
Kites don’t, and they have developed rigging and control systems to control the kites, and much like sails to “tack” in order to movecthe ship in a different direction to the wind.
I’m not a sailor, but as stated above a friend has told me about such systems.
But yes, this is for relatively small sailing boats, which use lightweight construction methods, whethervwith sails or kites.
Practically speaking, this idea of using it for 100’s of ton cargo ships, should have never made its way ON to the drawing boards, let alone off.
Just try reefing down one of those massive sails if the sheet get stuck in stormforce winds.
Not happening.
NEXT UP: Steam engines retooled to burn FIREWOOD! We are officially living “Atlas Shrugged”–and I believe Elon Musk may be Ellis Wyatt-
Living Anthem – a return to the Dark Ages.
Why don’t we just make the stuff we need here and let every other country do the same. This is getting stupid!
Silence that woman for insubordination and Wrong Think!!!!!
Their ultimate goal is to force us to “need” fewer things. Part of the strategy to achieve this is to make said things scarcer & harder to get. They want to dramatically reduce the standard of living in the Western World.
As well as reduce the existence of the Western World.
These idiots really can’t be that stupid. PDT was right getting out of that Paris Climate Scam. Like up here in the northwest. NO plastic bags, but paper bags filled with plastic wrapping from nearly everything you buy gets burned daily from everyone around us up here. Heating oil? No problem, been burning wood for the last month and will keep right on burning it until Spring
Because then you would be polluting in your own country.
There is a NIMBY aspect to environmentalism that is seldom, if ever, brought up. Part of the reason of off shoring to Asia and other third-world countries was to move manufacturing – and resulting pollution – to countries without EPA regulations. Then the powers that be can claim how green they are by moving to a service-based economy.
WOW! Its not like anybody ever suggested such a novel concept, particularly not PDJT!
Of course I think kites are a great idea,
to provide the energy necessary to move merchandise over the oceans !
What’s my profession…you ask ?
I sell kites, of course !
The Romans used undocumented workers as rowers. They were very environmentally conscious. When the rowers were no longer productive, they fed them to the lions and charged admission! When the Uigyrs become unproductive, the Chinese harvest their organs. XI takes efficiency to new heights and the NBA applauds!
HA HA HA HA!!! Idiots.
Go for it! I hope we get to see that trial.
We need some laugh every once in a while.
If we could convert cow methane to wind, we’d be getting somewhere.
What about developing a gigantic vacuum/pneumatic tubing system like the banks and pharmacies use for drive up customers from China to California? Was this considered?
Don’t laugh. Isn’t that was Elon Musk’s underground “LOOP” idea was all about? Except it was domestic. A tube from China is really going to need a lot of sucky-sucky.
Ross Perot has a quip for that.
Justbplumb the endvof it to DC, it sucks more than enough.
O. M. G
Wait just a minute, is that a while (supremest) sail ?
Satire is dead. These creatures are caricatures of themselves. The next thing you know they’ll be demanding that we wear stupid cloth masks to prevent transmission of an imaginary cold virus. LOL
Steve Fulton solved this problem back in the early 1800’s! Steam propulsion will solve this carbon emission garbage, and it may even help create some much needed rain! Good lord folks, this technology is over 200 years old. Surely it can be improved and used quickly.
What happens when the wind blows in the opposite direction?
You zig-zag.
I have a better idea: Make more stuff local instead of importing out of China.
Import back the jobs, produce more goods and services. Simpler supply lines, less pollution to transport.
Needs a theme song…
“Kind of a Drag” – Buckinghams
“Dragging the Line” – Tommy James
“Let’s Go Fly A Kite” – from Mary Poppins
Come Sail Away – Dennis DeYoung aka Styx
Southern Cross, CSN
“Tangled Up” – Caro Emerald.
If we went back to making all of our own stuff Europe could park all those ships.
How about: WE GO BACK TO MAKING THINGS HERE?
Okay, did we change worlds overnight? This world gets crazier every day! Let’s start making stuff in the good ole USA again, close our borders, grow our own food and DARE any other country near us! Oh and let’s get rid of the wackos that are trying to ruin our country! Don’t know rather to laugh or cry. Please, Lord Jesus help us!
Actually, HONESTLY:
Just like the Covid, this is a test of how dumb and/or weak people are, atm. There is not ONE person around this committee that didn’t laugh their hiney off, half drunk or stoned, at the absurdity of it. A complete, utter farce.
This is the adult, Congressional version of the rubber dog turd, and they are STUNNED some people bought it. At this point, they must figure we’ll accept anything.
Worse- I almost wonder if they’re right for nearly half the population.
Thats ONE view, but there IS another, far scarier version, and I am still “on the fence” as to which it is.
The other one is that the people, sitting around discussing this were ABSOLUTELY serious, and were thinking (in their heads) about how they and a couple of buddies, could qualify for 100’S of millions in govt loans, to do a start up that would promptly fail,…and they could skim off MILLIONS!
Since THAT was their actual thinking and motivation, “whether it could work” was NEVER a consideration, only whether the SCAM could work.
How many, and to what degree, do the idiots in charge really believe what they are saying?
I fear they are so out of touch with reality, they REALLY BELIEVE the foolishness the are spouting.
Talk about a brainwashing experiment, how many people will say a woman can have a p—s????
Soon they’ll be shipping on the Mayflower II. The more we “progress” the more we go backwards.
Thats just rasssccist!
Brings to mind a Bible prophecy:
“After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree” (Revelation 7:1).
“Woe to all the merchants . . .”
Let them keep their shit. We should be making America Great Again and make what we need here in the USA. This is the reason they had to get rid of our President Donald Trump. F/U Joebama and the EU globalists.
To all who have expressed this MAGA sentiment, which I agree with, please note the ARTICLE is about the EUROPEAN UNION exploring options, so the EU can comply with emissions standards.
IF we were to bring manufacturing back to US, and if our companies wanted to sell products to the EU, there would still be a need for a way to transport.
The EU and any other Gov’s that sign on to the Accord, are going to encounter the same impossible situation; they made agreements they can’t possibly keep.
Despite there being no real consequence for failure, they will use this created crisis, to justify CARBON CREDITS, which is thecreal next goal.
Like Derivatives (remember 2008?) they want to establish a whole new market, trading in Carbon Credits.
Another phoney, only on paper market, like Wall Street has become.
These climate goons all need to go fly a kite.
As long as we are going backward in history how about the 1870’s Nautilus of Jules Vern’s Captain Nemo which derived its power source from sea water. Nowadays Hydrogen/oxygen fuel can be derived from sea water H2O and gold could be a byproduct.
Note to self— Invest in horse and wagon ASAP.
Sail on, Sail on, sailor.
Kon Tiki redux!
Container shipping faces the brunt of new European emissions rules
Maritime is having to contend with the splintering of environmental regulations following last week’s proposal by the European Commission of a cap and trade system for shipping emissions. Analysis carried by Splash today shows that of the three main shipping sectors, containers will face by far the greatest impact from the Brussels directive.
The European proposal calls for 50% of the carbon emissions on a voyage to or from a port in the EU, rising to 100% for intra-EU voyages, to be offset by purchasing carbon credits on European emission trading systems (ETS). Shipping’s inclusion in the ETS will start in 2023 and be phased in over three years according to the proposal, which will need the approval of the European Parliament and the EU Council before becoming an EU law.

THERE ya go; Trillions of Euros at stake, from trading, buying, selling pieces of paper,..and THINK of the commisions and trading fees!
Hospitals in USA and in first world countries are refusing life-saving Ivermectin treatment even with court orders. Big Pharma doing everything they can to jab us no matter what, while alternative COVID cures EXIST! There happens to be heavy censorship who are looking for these treatments. The Research Is Clear: Ivermectin Is a Safe, Effective Treatment for COVID.
Get your Ivermectin before it is too late https://ivmpharmacy.com
The FED is ahead of the curve printing all those dollars for the sails we’ll need.
My God this isn’t progress, we’re going backwards. Isn’t that how everyone came from Europe to the ‘New World’? On ships with sails, Mayflower anyone? My word it’s going to take 3x as long now to get things across the ocean, what happens when the sail is torn? do they have backup sails? Will there be motors on the ship to help out when the sails can’t be used?
Inquiring minds want to know..!
Such sails would be dunked and deflated more often than Charlie Brown lost his kites to trees.
Adds new meaning to “taking the slow boat to China”.
Equivalent to putting a poodle on a treadmill to boost a freight locomotive.
China’s New Silk Noose just added a new dimension of farce.
We are being ruled by children, and the dumbest ones in the class at that.
Well, wait. Some may also be deviously clever. Like the ones who have “friends” in the sail-making business.
And those friends employ their children.
Let’s just tie long rope from country to country and we slaves can pull them into port.
Ever realize how when innovation and advancement was driven by the producers (the Industrial Revolution, etc.) the results made life easier and better, but when pulled by end goal mandates from the government, they make life worse and more difficult?
Good grief. The movie “Idiocracy” ain’t got nothin on real life in 2021.
I know what we can do!
What!
Go back to building ships with sails like it is 1870
Brilliant!!!
Seriously, the manning for a sailing ship is signifigant.
This is just a reality response to the ridiculous mindless ‘initiative’ propositions. Well first, good for real sailboats. The route from Europe, Canary Islands across the Atlantic from Cape Verdes to Brazil will not have to worry about ships since when the calm sets in nobody will have any motion capability so no cargo ships will be on a time table using this route – hence production and delivery stop because of weather conditions for certain routes). Under normal and particularly storm or mishandling conditions – sails tear, sheets give out .. who will be able to even drop and retrieve violently flapping sails with wind-driven whip-lashing sheets or even handle those under widely rolling conditions (rolling the more violent for top heavy vessels, no speed – that will be present, since sheets tear and sheets break under extreme weather circumstances .. nightmare for even the smallest of boats let alone huge cargo ships. Crew is needed to sail those boats 24/7 at less than time-efficient speeds. Thorough outfitting/replacement of all cargo ships by shippers. Cars and heavy equipment breaking loose under storm or any rolling conditions taking deep dives into the ocean. This is just stuff of reality becoming cartoon material. Not going to happen – the impossibility of big cargo ships especially for perishables using sail to get to their destinations on time.
Exactly. Also…have you ever been out in the ocean in near hurricane winds? I have. If you don’t have a motor to keep position against the waves you will roll over and go under
I have been through many hurricanes having lived and worked on luxury vessels up and down the Caribbean. Personally on my own boat, been through icy gales or fog crossing the English Channel with heavy shipping traffic all around, caught in strong tidal current off the coast of Brittany, with full rudder to get out and further away (praying the rudder won’t break) – been in many gales or storms with 12 foot waves – a few times downwind – at least with enough wind even with jib on boom forward of mast, main sail fully reefed but able to maneuver without jibing or broaching; the long in between high waves don’t bother me, it’s the steep ones that require more than just knowing what one is doing. Not easy when it’s cold, one is tired which is normal. It’s those high waves full slamming the boat 90 degrees on a beam reach (didn’t want to have to close haul miles away later. Sitting facing forward, legs couldn’t get fully anchored on other side of cockpit seat. It still hurts every time a huge wave slams into the boat, but no broken back. Still, that I don’t like. The small motor on my boat had to be hand cranked to use and it was not something I use would use normally. This was an old wooden cutter – 2 of its kind ever built. Only once – first time ever used – was in that tidal drift slamming me further toward rocks. Couldn’t tack. When the wind picked up considerably I had the rudder tied way over praying within 5 seconds to get it going. This wasn’t even a strong motor but sure did got me away further out to sea.
What they REALLY have in mind for us:
And AOC will want to go water skiing.
Come sail away!
Come sail away with me!!!
The Drax power station in England burns sustainable wood chips from the US. Yippee! Unfortunately the wood chips come from complete deforestation of 100 year old forests on the East Coast. Yep it’s reneeal alright. It just takes decades to renew. Brilliant thinking by these mental midgets.
😲
It’s clear beyond doubt now.
Being educated does not make you smart.
These are really, really, really stupid people.
What if we put thousands of people in the boat, stick wooden oars out of holes along the side, and have them row. That would really do the trick. We could empty out all the prisons for the first trips. Think of the money we would save on their room and board.
Those rowing jobs will be automated.
Propelled by miniature sails.
Automation runs off of non sustainable devices most of the time. Solar and wind alone will not sustain a sailboat. Sailboats are fun, but not for the “new” world.
Don’t give them any ideas. Next they’ll be using the unvaxxed to man the oars.
Hah – just made the same statement before seeing yours 🙂
The unvaxxed will be the only ones healthy enough to row….and reproduce….and fight…
Im unjabbed! How does it pay?
Ever seen the rowing scene in “Ben Hur?”
Gonna need a LOT of whips
LOL
Good idea but it might not not reduce the carbon used on the voyage by that much as the energy required to forge the shackles from steel and feed the crew working the oars would offset the savings gained switching to oar power.
Unless of course you want to put the people pulling the oars on the honor system and skip the shackles but I wouldn’t want to risk my life beating the drum to keep them all pulling in sync if the threat of them revolting existed.
You could appoint the rowers to the level of honorary Vikings and give them a share of the plunder.
They’ll be using Australian COVID detainees. They need the exercise, right?
A lot of the carbon reducing measures don’t actually reduce carbon. This would fit in well.
The version of the Valdiz in the movie water World comes to mind.
Still remember Dennis Hopper…”get them excited and they will row for weeks before they realized we lied”.
Of course the designs for the old Yankee Clippers are on file in several archives.
I was thinking this scene:
Ben-Hur (1959) – Rowing of the Galley Slaves HD – Bing video
That is a good one as well. Still remember the scene when the new Roman fleet commander sat next to the orator and tested the rowers.
Row well and live, forty-one.
I volunteer to be the masked thug who flogs the galley slaves!
Everyone will be masked. Or else… keelhauling!
That would be against their human rights. Same with illegal immigrants. Only regular citizens should have these conditions imposed on them. After all, that’s what the draft is for, isn’t it?
BTW, those galley slaves drank a LOT of water. That is why they were generally only used in warcraft.
Nope, that will be the NEW JOB of the Unvaccinated!
Haha! The prison guards could be reassigned as compliance officers to make sure those rowing the boat give their best effort, “for the greater good”.
If we save the universe, no sacrifice is too big.
On a serious note…
I guarantee the Pirate ships will have engines and run on gas.
On a serious note, all seamen will have to return to maritime school to get their sailing endorsement.
With all the extra days at sea, marlin spike seamanship will have a rebirth.
It shall be known as “Sailyndra”
😁
I sea what you did there….
It’ll never float.
LOL!
It might float, but it’ll need a heckuva lot of ballast or one very large and deep keel….to stay upright.
Just need Joe Biden to fart
And will be about as profitable
