Folks, this story is not from The Onion or any version of sarcastic media. This is very real.
To meet the compliance standards of the Paris Climate Accords and the subsequent treaty that all EU nations agreed to, they must reduce carbon emissions in freight and transit systems. They have spent thousands of hours pouring over possible solutions and will begin the test phase next month.
Bloomberg News – At the start of next year, the Ville de Bordeaux, a 154-meter-long ship that moves aircraft components for Airbus SE, will unfurl a 500 square meter kite on journeys across the Atlantic Ocean. It will undergo six months of trials and tests before full deployment.
While the industry has come up with multiple decarbonization initiatives, it is struggling to keep pace with goals set out under the Paris Agreement on climate. There’s also pressure on shipping lines from large customers who are pressing to make their own supply chains less polluting. (read more)
Yes my friends, the extremely well educated scientists, physicists, climatologists, sustainability engineers and cross functional decarbonization problem solvers for the planetary saving climate justice agenda, have invented…. wait for it….
….Sailboats!
With each and every passing day it is becoming more apparent that the Democrats/liberals and their like domestic and international ilk have a serious chromosome defect. As I’ve stated before, if all the aforementioned individuals suddenly vanished off the face of the earth, 99 percent of all the serious problems that we face would disappear.
Obama is not a Liberal Democrat and neither is Ilhan Omar, Adam Schiff, Chuck Schumer or Mitch McConnell. Chromosome defects sure but we have underestimated the enemy for years now.
Excuse me, what the procedure when it looses air🤓😂😂, helicopter 🍺🍺🍺☕️
I thought along the same lines. What a head fake. None waves in picture is a tell. That para sail is in the water and sail goes under ship to foul propeller. Joke photo in that arrangement. Now if ship her fitted with masts and proper sails I would say might work as an assist to forward motion.

“Swabbies, to the oars! Put your backs into it, you dogs!”
Fans on deck operated by solar cells will blow air at the kite
Or, you could just run them on gasoline to efficiently move products while also releasing life-giving carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is known as a two-fer.
This is the funniest story of a bunch of Europeene Dolts I have read in a long time. To think that calling a sail a kite is not a sail is dumb founding. Stupid is as stupid does. I now live by this to get me through every day. Thank you, Sundance, for the great release through laughter. LGB
Subsidies, mandates, laws, treaties, and regulations that require this are all dumb.
But using readily available wind power to supplement diesel in trans-oceanic shipping is not dumb.
If you want efficient.
Put a nuke power plant on board and run that ship for years without fueling up.
Now that’s not dumb.
How long before some enterprising entrepreneur offers free sails with pre-printed messages (how about “Let’s go Branden”?
I’m up with this option:

Oh the humanity!
Ja Ja!!
That’ll help the supply chain issues. Let me guess, the sails….I mean kites, will be manufactured in China.
In order to have a dependable electric grid, for every Megawatt of electricity generated by unreliable wind and solar, there must be a matching or greater amount of electricity generation capability by reliable (fossil or nuclear) generation sources, and those sources must be online 100% of the time (I am paraphrasing author Terigi Ciccone and Jay Lehr, Phd). This means wind and solar are not economically viable energy sources in a properly costed system. Imagine ships using this wind powered sources that haven’t been used for commercial, cross ocean trips in decades. They must always have reliable energy sources available at a moment’s notice or they will become stranded or worse, battered by storms. Of course, slowing the shipping traffic might relieve the CA port backups. At least until the wind and solar powered trucks stop moving.
I remember sailing across Texas’s bays fighting a 25 knot headwind. Tacked like an America’s cup race. Took us 12 hours to go 12 miles. Using technology to reduce drag and improve aero dynamics is a worthwhile endeavor. As a primary source of power is foolish and political.
We’ve reverted to windmills and kites; so what’s next, discarding the wheel and using sledges? The ultimate triumph of socialist science would then be reversing the whole industrial revolution, I suppose. Why not? If Fauci is self-anointed “science,” anything is possible/believable.
Best comment bc it is absolutely spot on.
Maybe they will outlaw fire – after all it generates CO2. Maybe we attacked the riots last year wrong and should have pointed out how much they contributed to global warming /s.
Nothing like sailing over a 500 square meter sail and its rigging that has crashed into the sea in front of its ship moving at cruising speed to make its trip more efficient. May take them a few years and billions in grant money to figure out the purposes of masts, spars, stays and other fine points of sailing paraphernalia.
There are actually sane concepts being considered out there that do address such:
Michelin’s inflatable sails hybridize freight ships to cut emissions

The US is pretty pathetic on the world stage.
Other superpowers are planning the demise of America.
The US is worried about the temperature of the planet, toxic masculinity, and gender pronouns.
Everything that’s not real.
Russia is building nuclear powered icebreakers and using them too.
The key word being “Should”. Should along with the words “might”, “may”, “could” are wishful thinking.
Build Back Better, to the 19th century(and prior); bring back slave propelled galleys.
Rowlocks and oars. Using unvaxxed serfs.
What a great idea, fantastic!
If you’re a Pirate on the seven seas. Heck, you should be able to board the cargo, steal a bunch of stuff, take it back to your lair, go back, do it again, and again, and again.
Your pirate ship moving at 25 knots vs that cargo clipper moving at a blazing 4 knots following the trade winds, assuming it’s windy.
God forbid a hurricane comes up from the South East as the cargo clipper is lumbering along at 3 knots…
This brilliant idea must have come up from the grand children of the geniuses that created La Maginot Line…
Dropping that Spinnaker in the water will create huge risks.
Sometimes a concept, should just remain a concept. Nothing more.
They should put a big fan on the bow of the ship to make it go faster.
Science ™
Yes a solar powered one.
Faster!! How will they make it stop?
just how much constant wind will be needed to move those ships….bring out the unicorns
What was once old has become new again.
Great painting. I wish we could bring back the plank to eliminate our problems.
“This could revolutionize our submarine fleet.”

A Borg Analysis:
Note all the practical things not being considered:
More efficient hull design, less drag. Catamaran? How about a longer, narrower ship with a gradually-tapered stern allowing for a vortex-free flow (no bow waves, no churn).
How about switching to jet-pump impellers instead of traditional propellers? If not, at least improve propeller design to reduce energy-wasting cavitation and vortex generation. They figured this out decades ago with fast-attack nuclear subs.
How about pumping compressed air through thousands of tiny holes around the bow area, creating a thin coat of bubbles along the skin, minimizing contact with the water? The Russians have been experimenting with this tech for designing super-fast torpedoes.
New engine technology or bolt-on fuel management system to improve performance.
Vent exhaust through bolt-on carbon recovery systems. This tech is in use for many coal-fired power plants.
How about going slower to reduce drag. Trading improved fuel economy for slightly longer transit times. Rate of fuel consumption increases radically the faster you try to go; more energy is required simply to move tons and tons of water out of the way before the ship can go forward. Same with your car; fuel economy plummets with increase in speed due to air resistance.
No matter what solution these twits come up with, it belies the fact that CO2 isn’t a very effective “green house” gas in the first place! And no matter how much carbon you allegedly block from entering the atmosphere over the next decade, just one minor volcanic eruption in Iceland, Spain, Italy or Mexico would produce 5 – 10 times that amount.
I see a wake from engines turning something under the water at the stern. A nice straight wake on an almost dead calm piece of water. In addition that boat is NOT a cargo ship.
All this nonsense for a global problem that’s not even real. I thought the dems were moving to Mars. Lol
What’s next, getting rid of all farm equipment and work the fields by hand with a mule?
Some people believe with an unshakable faith that Washington DC can control the daily temperature, rainfall, snowfall, peak cherry blossom date and the amount of plastic bottles floating in the tide pool underneath said cherry blossoms if the rest of the country pays enough Carbon Tithe to Albert Gore,Jr and Congress.
The fantasies of idiots
That nylon, dacron, kevlar mylar whatever sail is from petrol.
That boat needs to be wooden and the lines (ropes) out of sisal.
You won’t believe how much coal is dumped with iron ore into blast furnaces to make a steel hull.
All of that manufacturing will happen in China and India so that the Guilty White Liberals in The West can pretend that it doesn’t exit.
Can you imagine the tension on that center line back to the ship?
Caption your own supply chain cartoon…

Fixed it for them.
Dump the stocks right now.
Will the Circle Back Bitch be available for the PR campaign. Great ideas need someone like her.
What happens when that huge kite drops into the water when there is a calm spell? Do the crew get out and pull the ship with oars via a rowboat? How long would it take to remove that kite from the sea? If they could only install giant poles on the ship and hang the kites from those poles I’d think it would make much more sense. Instead of kites they could hang giant tarps or sheets to catch the wind. This is probably a pipe dream and it will take decades to perfect the technology.
How about we put long oars, maybe 50 -100 on each side of the ship to row it? We could use criminals serving time or the unvaccinated.
Spielberg is already working on a movie utilizing my last idea. It is a woke movie. “Ben Him”, I think it’s called?
You made my day with Ben Him.
The BIRDS and FISH, what about them? How many will die getting stuck in flying tarps?
Hey Boogystew
Too funny.
(I was also envisioning the un vaxxed manning the oars. Haha)
A large pod of endangered whales drowned when the weighty mega kite, attached to a behemoth cargo ship, dove into the sea on top of the pod. Scientists are studying how to recapture the kite which has become the center of a shark feeding frenzy. Film at eleven.
I was thinking more like “Ben Hur Done That”
About a hundred and seventy-five years ago, the British Navy discovered that switching to steam-powered ships gave them a tremendous advantage over sail powered vessels since they could sail where they wanted to, even against the wind!
I have an idea: How about we stop buying junk from China?
A more significant issue than carbon, in my opinion, is pollution (noise and trash) in the oceans. Research underwater noise pollution killing sea life. It seems to be causing whales and dolphins to be unable to hear signals, disorientation and possibly internal bleeding in their “ears”
This insanity will end when China conquers the West which unfortunately is becoming more and more likely.
Sweet kite! Kevin Costner’s character had one of those in that movie Waterworld (1995).
I can totally scale that down and modify it for horse drawn carriages.
The local radio station interviewed some health expert on why rural women would turn up for mammograms, but not colonoscopies. Apparently quite a bit of money has been spent on research for this issue.
They have not yet figured out that a woman can drive herself to get a mammogram, but needs a driver to get a colonoscopy due it being a procedure that requires sedation. It is far more difficult to find a ride to and from town for a surgery or medical procedure that requires a driver if you live in a rural setting than if you live in the city. Over time the rules have become more strict w/the transportation issue. Find the women rides and they will go get their colonoscopies. It ain’t rocket science.
This is worse than stupid: The parasail shown in the photo above only works if the wind is behind you. With a proper mast and sail you can go in any direction you want by tacking and in fact, you can attain greater speed while tacking than when the wind is behind. But of course there was a really good reason for ships converting from sails to powered propulsion – TIME, it was much faster and the time saved was more than worth the use of expensive machinery and the cost of fuel ! Furthermore, shipping moves 80% of the worlds goods but only produces 3% of the CO2 !!
Follow the money.
Bingo!
Seriously, I just can’t stop chuckling at the stupidity. Even the picture is hilarious, I can imagine the “brainstorming meetings “ , or lack there of , that went into this ridiculous idea.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
We’ll be back to horse and buggy before we know it!
Oxen and carts, mules and plows (if we’re lucky), washboards etc, I’ve been saying they want to bust us back to the 1800’s. Looks like they’re going to do it. I actually bought a washboard and lots of thread to mend clothes, or sew up Patriots. As Sundance says “whatever it takes”. I’ll try to do my part. This is lunacy, I hope we’re not headed for another Great Depression but nothing would surprise me.
I got an idea! You know horses, the animals that run in races like the Kentucky Derby? Yea, here’s my idea: we hook horses up (connect them somehow) with carts to carry stuff and carriages that people can ride in! I think it will work!
I don’t know… they have problems with cows. Are horses any better?
Also, I think they want horses carriages banned.
maybe they could put one of the giant windmills on the ship
If we made more stuff here in the USA, we wouldn’t need so many ships.
But I suppose the mega yachts for billionaires and rental yachts for Hanks, JayZ and whomever else from Hollywood are fine?
I can see it now …
“You getting vaccinated?”
“No way, never!”
Next thing you know you’re shackled to an oar …
if you removed all emissions generating marine vessels…all of them…from the largest all the way down to tge
Now that we’re going to re-invent the Bronze Age maybe somebody will be kind enough to take notes for the future generations’ study of ancient history…seeing as the notes disappeared from the last time thru.
How long before “cruise vacation” means you get an oar when you board the ship?
And furthermore, how are the wind turbines gonna make electricity when our oceans are filled with cargo ships capturing all the wind?
It’s going to be awesome to see the amount of drag that sail creates when it drops in the water during a lull even if the ship doesn’t run over it and get tangled in it.
Windmills are good until the first high wind hits. These will be good until the first no-wind hits.
Gosh, can’t they just put electric engines in those freighting ships? Then we could spend another $5.7 trillion building charging stations (maybe using decommissioned oil rigs, for example) all around the worlds oceans.
On a more positive note… can you imagine the shipping time from Japan or Europe using sail power? You thought the supply chain was delayed now… But, it would solve the problem of ships having to be anchored off the coast of California waiting to be off-loaded. it would take them so long to get here, there would be NO delays at the port.
that is not a kite — it is a jib
Wow. What a concept. Using wind to move ships.
Can’t fix stupid.
As a long time sailor my first thought is how do you rig and reef the sail with no mast. (Ever tried to stow a spinnaker). Also what happens when the wind dies or shifts, & the whole thing goes in the drink &
And fouls the props & rudders (not to mention the forward steering engines)
Or, get too close to a wind turbine in the sea??? LOL………
SHOULDN’T THEY BE RAINBOW KITES…. I’M SO OFFENDED.
NEXT, THEY WILL BE TRAINING WHALES TO PULL SHIPS…
Even better, instal gallery slave benches for the Davos crowd to do their part outsourcing their private yets carbon footprint. Most of them need to work out anyway.
private jets I meant
Will Lloyds exclude damage caused by knock downs?
Fart sequestration… brilliant!!!
I didn’t read all the previous comments, so someone maybe already said something similar…
But what if the wind is blowing the wrong way?
Oh, that’s easy…
They’ll just wrap the wind around the sail so it’s blowing the right way
Tacking. A sailing maneuver.
You don’t get very far in the direction you want to go, since you’re sailing back and forth, but it’ll get you there eventually.
From the looks of it, they will only be able to run free. How often does a ship have the wind at its back? This isn’t just an ancient technology but one that the ancients knew how to use much more expertly.
They can just mount a wind propellar on the ship engines are electric anyway. hell of a wave for a jet ski to jump. !!!
Seems like a large market for selling wind generators. Won’t work, but sounds like it would. When you know nothing, you think you know everything. Put wind generators on every ship. Then, gentlemen, start your engines. Libs won’t be on the boat, so, problem solved. “Yeah, all of our ships are Green-Qualified. All have wind generators and a sail.”
Easy. They’ll install a giant electric fan on the bow. Powered by a diesel engine, of course!
That’s easy, they’ll deliver their cargo to a different port.
