Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg appeared on the DC narrative shaping program hosted by swamp gatekeeper Chris Wallace. Within the interview Buttigieg was questioned about why West Coast port backups are worse now than before the White House announced their solution to operate ports 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Buttigieg proclaimed the ports are being impacted by the pandemic, and ships stuck in China are the reason why ships are sitting off the coast of California. Yeah, try to square that circular logic. LOL. The scale of incompetence, even in common sense politispeak, is off the charts. The illogical statements by this guy are legendary; however, he outdid himself today.
Eventually Pete weaves his way through fourteen nonsensical catch phrases to get to a point where he proclaims nothing in the supply chain will start being more efficient until everyone is vaccinated. And yes, it appears that he is so stuck in pretzel-speak, Buttigieg actually believes that.
All of that said, I wouldn’t post this for review if it wasn’t for the ‘hard-hitting‘ segment from Wallace that comes right after. You just gotta watch (prompted):

As noted, and as previously outlined, the issues with the backlog of the California ports have absolutely nothing to do with rapid unloading of ships and container vessels. The issue is the inability of California truckers to move those containers. The problem is a shortage of CA emission compliant internal transportation trucks to move the containers out of the port and into the U.S. mainland.
As a result… the politically expedient goal to get rid of the optical problem (the ships) by offloading containers into a California port system, that is already overwhelmed with tens-of-thousands of containers, is only making the original issue exponentially worse. More people are now starting to understand the internal issue that has been created by recent California laws, rules and regulations.
Daniel Greenfield at Front Page Magazine has a solid outline of the emission compliance issues and the problem of independent truckers not being able to work in California:

Get several fleets of heavy multipurpose transport helicopters (probably left a few dozen at Bagram Air Base) and use them to airlift containers off the vessels waiting in the ports to the mainland.

The NAVY could lift “Empty” containers off the chassis and deliver them to the cargo ships.
Then, the NAVY could move the loaded containers (Freight) from the cargo ships to where the “Empty” chassis is located.

If even a small part of the “Get the EMPTY off the chassis” problem could be mitigated for the drivers, the time spent “At the Port” would be lessoned and “Loaded” containers leaving the Port (now in storage) would increase proportionally.
Imho, the “Ports” are adhering to a rigid plan, when the situation requires fluidity. If the “Empty” containers are stacked together with others owned by the same company, a significant portion of space now allotted to “Truck Traffic” at the Port could be utilized as “Empty” container storage space.
You don’t need to find a specific location of a specific companies container… just go get one… anyone.

Note–Early pictures of the container ship indicated that it was grossly overloaded. Add 109 containers to the top of the ship in the after the storm pictures.

Percentage-wise, the wait time at Savannah is apparently worse than the west coast and there is no issue with chassis/tractor compliance, rather drivers being in shortage both for in-port and out-port operations. Due to the Jones Act, and relatively little US built, US flagged cargo capacity, shuttling containers along the various coasts by water is nearly impossible. Everything has to go by land or be landed directly from foreign ports at the destination. Other U.S ports not affected by CA environmental laws are experiencing similar challenges. Houston and Savannah are two big ones.
Also, LA/LB ports are apparently instituting fines for landed dormant containers in the ports, post 9 days for truck, post 6 days rail, and escalating per day per container beyond the initial 100.00 fine. I believe the container state is irrelevant, either loaded or empty.
Also, I’ve seen reports from merchant mariners that due to the backlogs at anchor, transporters are burning more fuel to get to ports faster to get in line earlier since it’s first come first serve in the queue, then they sit for days or weeks at anchor paying crew for idle time and running the shipboard systems while waiting, driving up costs and increasing the queue size. Normally they’d schedule and steam for the most economical sail and to minimize anchor time.
The one thing that puzzles me though is shipping analysts are reporting record landings apparently due to high demand at the same time jobs are going unfilled and Americans are being idled by vaccine mandates and other related job actions and job participation is hovering near record lows, not to mention scores of businesses were destroyed by the Covid operation.
Where is all this demand coming from? It takes money to buy widgets. My instinct is it’s being artificially created, similar to the crazy high home prices, crazy low interest rates, and a flat line stock market at near record levels. The whole economy is being manipulated. How they can keep this up I have no idea. God help us when it all comes crashing down, presuming that’s what happens.
