Mark Levin had an interesting take on this last week and it made me start thinking of the debt ceiling in a different light. For as long as I can remember, the argument, no matter who was in control, was that we cannot default on our debt. If I understand his him correctly, Mark’s view is that it is the debt service (interest) that is at risk because we keep rolling over any maturing debt, so we are not worried about paying principal. The federal government takes in about $330 billion in revenues every month and $44 billion (I don’t remember the exact numbers but these are close) of that is needed for debt service. There is still plenty to pay SS, Medicaid/Medicare because those are absolutes. The problem is that after that, Congress would be required to make decisions on what would and would not be paid – obviously something they do not want to do. I say hold their feet to the fire and force them to make some hard decision about the nonsense that the federal government is spending our money on.
Having said all that, it will never happen. The debt ceiling will be raised after both parties have put on enough of a show to make us think it is a real nail-biter.

I’m hoping the government does shut down this will give a way out for our soldiers who don’t want the shot without getting a dishonorable discharge. If they don’t get paid its a breech of contract. Came close to happening when I was in but Navy Federal credit union floated a loan.
Understand the difference between the debt ceiling fight and a budget impasse.
A budget impasse is when you and your spouse can’t agree whether to buy a car or a canoe and you stop writing checks for half the household budget and you don’t pay the maid but you always made it up to her all those other times so she keeps working anyways – but the rental house rent is still coming in and automatically paying the utilities on the rental. (Federal Employees and contractors don’t get paid but the postal service and patent office employees and some State department functionaries still stay in business and pay their bills because they are funded through fees).
A failure to raise the debt ceiling is when you have spent everything in every bank account and your credit card companies just shut down your card. Now you cannot pay a single one of your bills.
Not the retiree pay, not the Social Security, not the disability, not the doctors bills (Medicaid), not the charity payments (no EBT refills).
If the debt ceiling holds, then in three weeks, tens of millions of Americans don’t eat.
Whatever the government can do for you, it can do to you.
We have seen a lot of hard truths hit home this year. Don’t become dependent on the government to put food in your mouth, or at the very least have a plan B, may be about to be the next lesson.
If it has to pass to avoid complete societal breakdown, will it? Amid all the crazy, maybe not?
Get out of cities. Review your FEMA family emergency plans.
