As we work through bugs associated with CTH 2.0 launch, consider this a thread to provide information, report user issues, ideas and concerns. Please read the information provided below as it might answer many questions in advance.
Today, December 2nd, was our official eviction date as established by WordPress/Automattic two weeks ago. Considering the scale of moving 11 years worth of data (56,000 articles, massive media file, 7.2 million comment library), the tech team did a great job.
That said, we anticipated some issues, are encountering others, and we are carefully working through a checklist.
First, we wanted to migrate the data and site in the least disruptive way to the CTH community that provided continuity and familiarity.
Despite the tech issues with the disconnect from WP/Automattic servers to our own proprietary server system, that overarching goal was achieved. Now we are getting into the weeds.
First, some background so everyone can understand the big picture issues. Obviously WordPress/Automattic wanted us gone; however, in hindsight the unspoken purpose and motive behind our eviction is now making a lot more sense.
Based on insider information, there were two distinct issues that merged; sunlight upon them is against the interests of massive multi-billion dollar organizations, but at CTH the truth has no agenda, so here’s the inside explanation as it appears.

♦ Ideology – As they said in their notification to deplatform, the “content” of CTH was against the terms of WordPress/Automattic. This is not really a surprise as Big Tech looks for any obtuse or obscure reason to silence voices that are not in political alignment with their goals. The decision by WP/Automattic is not surprising even if they would never publicly admit it. Quite simply, this battle has been going on for years and now it is at an inflection point. Alternates to the grip of Big Tech are starting to emerge, slowly.
♦ Business – In addition to the ideological nature of the motive, there is another element which has gained significant clarity in the past few weeks. Our CTH community did something WP/Automattic never expected… we were too successful.
The scale of the CTH reader and commenting community literally was/is a rebel alliance reeking havoc inside a host network that didn’t like our voice. Simultaneously, we were chewing up massive amounts of their server space and capacity. This is very interesting.
According to insiders who have reached out and shared their opinion, what CTH evolved into is far more than a simple blogging community. Essentially the metaphor provided is this: “you took a blog platform and built a mini FaceBook social media enterprise within it.” The CTH community, our extended global family of ragtag misfits, was/is using CTH as a network of like-minded friends to share and discuss information.
You might say well, isn’t that what a blogging community is all about… and the answer eleven years ago was a simple: yes. However, our assembly became much, much, much larger than a simple community.
The scale of having up to 25,000 simultaneous users is way beyond a simple blogging platform. CTH became a social media enterprise. Discussions, information sharing, networking and contact with each-other is what social media was all about.
The FaceBook social media model is essentially operating in our site. That’s an awesome outcome, but one WP/Automattic did not expect. In essence CTH hijacked the platform to create a social network.
All of that engagement costs the host (WP/Automattic) server space and massive amounts of bandwidth. Despite my paying for their hosting services (business plan), we were essentially living cheap, almost rent free, inside their platform. Once we realized this was also an element of concern, some prior work by WP/Automattic to control CTH made sense.
There is an interesting conversation happening in the coffee shops of Big Tech about this issue… WordPress/Automattic can never admit the unique financial problem that CTH created for them.
The business model for WP/Automattic is to sell the potential outcome of exactly what we achieved. WP/Automattic pitches their business plan by saying you can build a blogging community and share your voice.
Well, we took them up on that offer ten years ago and we built the biggest community within their system; a massive community. We did exactly what the marketing people at WP/Automattic say is possible… except we did it bigger than they ever imagined. Our success at achieving the scale of community created a problem they can never admit.
If WordPress/Automattic were to be honest now about the financial impact of users -like CTH- achieving success, they would be undercutting the entire marketing/advertising plan of their hosting platform.
The honest sales approach from WP/Automattic would be to say: we can provide you a platform, up until you achieve significant success; and then, it is in our financial interests, for you to leave. Obviously WP/Automattic would never sell their product if they were honest… so they look for reasons, any reasons, to control or eliminate the community. THAT appears to have been a big part of what drove their decision.
It was not a surprise that WP/Automattic kicked-us out immediately after they went into the market to get more money to expand operations. CTH was costing them money, perhaps a lot of money. As a consequence not only were they hosting a voice against their ideological interests, that voice was so big it was costing them money. Combine both factors and you get the insufferable excuse “your content” is against our interests.
Believe me, this financial ‘cost to host‘ issue is a big topic in the background of conversations in the tech industry. The hypocrisy of selling a product they do not really want to see succeed is a very interesting conversation. Sunlight upon this motive in the world of tech is kinda funny. The Automattic members can never allow this to be widely known; but the people within the machinery know exactly what the issues are.
♦ So, what does that mean to CTH 2.0? Well, we have a big server network hosting us right now – and it ain’t cheap (by a long shot). To give you an idea of how unique this situation is, they cannot even calculate the cost until they see the results over the next month or so.
This is uncharted territory. Our commenting community, specifically the number of simultaneous users, is essentially like a mini Facebook inside their server network. No-one has any idea how to manage this outside of pre-existing social media platforms that generate millions/billions in upfront revenue and construct proprietary and dedicated server farms.
It’s a good problem.. so everyone says.
It’s a good problem from the perspective of those who would love to monetize our network/community. However, that is not the purpose of our assembly.
To the extent our community will need money to securely exist and thrive safely, publicly and with privacy protections on an independent platform, that is ok. However, the true value in our community is our fellowship and the search for the truth.
♦ To the DETAILS:
The comment restoration function was a significant hurdle for a variety of reasons previously explained. One of the issues moving forward is the type of software that drives the comment function. We are trying to use the most private system possible that also provides security. The WordPress/Automattic system used a combination of proprietary creation and a system called JetPack.
Jetpack has some functional issues and is inherently connected to the comment function. When JetPack was uninstalled, it impacted the comment platform; that is why “likes” and the familiar embed Wavy avatars were lost. We are looking for alternate options that we can add to the site to restore those features and also add an edit button (if possible) to the comments. In the interim if you register a gravatar with your email address your custom avatar will follow you.
There is a comment system that most platforms are using called Disqus. If you let Disqus run ads in the comment space they provide the comment software free. However, Disqus does track users and I am not too happy with the privacy aspect. That would be a last resort, and only if they will set-up a custom privacy component.

Great job, Sundance — from a guy who spent 35 years in the software development business (from programmer to CEO) and saw the technology move from wiring boards to punch cards to mainframes to minicomputers to client/server to the Internet.
Your team is obviously quite capable, both in its technical and project management skills. You did the transfer in a timely manner, while retaining your core functionality similar to how it worked on WordPress.
I can’t thank you enough for establishing TCTH years ago, bringing excellent content to those of us willing to read the truth, and persisting through all the tough times.

Not quite wiring boards, but definitely punch card days. Ya, that was fun.

I’m so glad to see the comments back here again. There appear to be fewer comments than usual, and some of my own don’t seem to post, even after I refresh the page.
I enjoy the fact I don’t have to sign in to WP or Discus to comment here. I’ve never signed up to participate in any social media before. So I never had a “like” button or received any notifications. As long as I can still see the articles, the comments and can comment myself, I am good to go!

Sundance, I suspect this post will draw some daggers, but please consider carefully BEFORE adding an edit feature in Comments.
I’ve been a system operator and moderator for online groups, boards and forums since before there was an internet. I’ve seen plenty of confusion (and sometimes mischief) when users can Edit their posts after the fact.
More important, I believe the inability to edit keeps users here on their toes, and is one of the main reasons the QUALITY OF POSTS is superior to almost anywhere else on the web. It sets us apart. It requires users to proofread, self-edit, and think twice about the content of their message before they press “Post Comment.” I view it as a form of SELF-MODERATION.

Very good points! If someone feels they have posted a comment that is misleading of their thoughts or intent they are free to post a “corrective” subsequently. As aggravating as it is to realize a post was not what you wanted, it is certainly possible to add to and/or correct it. Furthermore, in a system with “likes” and the ability to edit, you are opening what was liked to future modification thus de-valuing the impact and accuracy of the “like.” Thanks!

I agree with your assessment.
The only good use for editing is to correct spelling/grammatical errors that the human mind is ridiculously good at processing through anyway (ex. “I can compreetly mispell th1s sentance amd evin a word out an jest abut any1 her can stel red it.”).
Far more important for the Treehouse is that each comment is a permanent record of thoughts, quotes and links to information that can be looked back upon as part of larger whole that gives it greater context than messages that can change out of fears of political winds or because it no longer agrees with the consensus.
Bring back the likes… though my personal first priority would be the ability to see Twitter and YouTube posts (and ideally Gab, Rumble, et al) in the thread… but don’t introduce editing; I fear that way lies madness.
I agree with the points made here…..long time members of the treehouse have wanted an edit function for the simple reason that they notice a spelling error or mis-languaged phrase after they have posted, and would just dearly love to fix it.
For most of us, it would never occur to make use of the edit function to twist communication around….one of the disadvantages of being a normally courteous individual surrounded by devious and manipulative people who are intending to twist communication.
I’ve accepted (to the best of my habitual ability!) the responsibility to edit before posting and then, if necessary, add a little reply correcting something that I missed. I really think Niagara makes valid points here. Those who hate us will not stop hating us now.
I’d like to dissent just a bit from NF’s view, which is not unreasonable.
One thing I’ve seen work is a limited window to perform edits/delete. Put them on a short timer, like 2-5 minutes, and you give people the opportunity to fix small mistakes like a typo or not correctly closing an html formatting code without letting things descend into chaos.

As an Ol’ sailor outside of a hurricane/typhoon, fog is by far the most treacherous condition at sea. We live in constant turbulent political times that we can navigate with skills learned through experience. Fog is a paralyzing condition requiring constant attention due to impaired vision. I felt the same sense, being unable to navigate this political fog of late. Without CTH to guide me through of devious media reporting of this election mess we find ourselves I’d still be floundering. Thank you SD, this is the beacon that allow one to avoid the shoal in the fog.
The major issue I’m having at CTH is I cannot logon and must post with a generic name and email address. I don’t even see the links to attempt to log on.
CattleDog, you only needed to login at the old WP site to comment and get notifications. If you didn’t need notifications, which I never did as I checked in daily, you didn’t even need an ‘account’ at Word Press. CTH 2.0 is no longer connected to WP, so, no account login needed.
However, now that Sundance/CTH is not restricted to just what features WP offered for their hosted blog sites, there is an infinite amount of ‘add-on modules’/features that could be added to the all new CTH 2.0 to make it even better. At that point, having a user account may be something you may need to do.

SD, thanks for the update and information. Your efforts and those of the CTH staff to migrate are so much appreciated by me and no doubt by all of the CTH community. It is so important to the future of our country that your voice and the voices of those in this community are not lost – so everything you have done and will do under very stressful conditions is very important and very appreciated!
Many thoughts about the subjects in the article.
Puzzling to me that WP didn’t try to negotiate with CTH re: a more realistic financial arrangement. IOW if CTH was costing money, why not just charge more? “Pay for what you use” seems like a rational business model on both ends. Of course the ideological factors could have been a barrier to rationality, we’ve seen that a lot. But smart, rational businesses aren’t concerned about (legal) ideologies of customers if their focus is on making money.
I looked ’em up, the new host seems typical within the “managed hosting” sphere, though I was a little surprised that their largest “standard” plans would suit only modest-sized clients, wouldn’t accommodate a really large client like CTH. So the hosting provider works by making an offer based on the resources required, essentially what Sundance said. It gets complicated re: what the host provides. Services for large clients are generally custom tailored, and costs not predetermined.
Disqus was problematic, at least it was for a couple of years that I was a moderator for one of the “channels” they used to have. Like other tech outfits Disqus became increasingly disruptive to conservative voices. However their current business model of providing paid services might change their approach. After all paying customers (sites that use their commenting engine) wouldn’t put up with interference by Disqus. If that’s how it would go, Disqus might be an acceptable option for CTH.
Hope that’s coherent. Gotta pick up my wife at the hospital—she had outpatient surgery today. Should be fine but needs a ride home… 🙂

I mostly use it for Breitbart and I find many of my comments are ‘lost’ or deleted for some reason. Most commentators believe it is Disqus that moderates and others claim it is Breitbart. I wonder if they both have the option to modify comments…
Since I comment ie., at Breitbart’s site, I agree that they have the right to keep their site’s commentary as they see fit and worthy of their Site’s Intentions Decorum and Honesty…
Haven’t been on BB in years, always was a circus there. GP seems more sane, perhaps a better model for CTH. American Thinker is even closer.
If the CTH makes a deal with Disqus, please require that they have a method for asking questions, and compel them to respond to inquiries. Disqus is absolutely horrible about helping users otherwise.
Sundance, please don’t go with Disqus. The mods for ‘connected’ comments are horrible and pre-moderate before AdRem would ever see them. And they are far from conservative. At noted above, they will never respond to inquries… they don’t need to.
There’s a ton of free or inexpensive commenting modules available to you now that you are not confined to just what WP offered. Tons. Check some of the CMS vendors out there. Many modules are stand-alone and can be added to most any php site. There are some really great features that could be incorporated. Such as; Member private messaging, counters, image utilities, user signature panels, search engines, galleries, and on and on.
Frankly, when I first came here 6 years ago, I was put off that TCTH was hosted at WordPress. It kept me from posting for the longest time, as I didn’t want an WP account (then I learned that I could post with a disposable email address).
DO add an edit feature, but set it to disable editing after say 3 minutes. Graamer and punction; fixes are real nice for us with fat fingers. 🙂
Add emojies and not just a like button, but Like options such as Award, LOL, Beer, Thumbs up, Eye roll, etc… All now available to you.

Given the short amount of time you had between notice and eviction date, I think you’ve done a fabulous job! Truly I mean that. I have one maxim I use for any big project. Expect at least 3 major problems to occur. Nothing will ever go perfectly, so count on at least 3 biggies to help set expectations.
I have complete faith you will figure it out and CTH 2.0 will be even better. Now I’m off to see if I can register my avatar!

Disqus is not a bad platform, if you can live with the tracking. I can live with a few ads if it’s free. But, whatever you do, don’t use Vuukle! The way it acts, it’s straight out of the Chinese Communist Party, including a “social score” than will get you quickly banned. Everybody hates Vuukle!

Gravatar won’t work for me since it would follow the email address, not the pseudonym, and I signed up with a recognizable email address that I’d rather not disclose — but that’s a very minor issue IMO.
I do, however, miss the “like” function as it alerts me to what others think, and commenters’ opinions on this site are valuable.
FYI most everything else seems to function pretty well on my cabled business network on multiple platforms and browsers.

This is a great post by Sundance. And I’m a tech guy. Built a company, and agree with the commentary. This community is huge. But we don’t have advertising support from companies who need eyeballs (yet).

Strange pop up earlier today and another Treeper said they got it as well. Paraphrasing it said I was posting to fast and slow down. Server overload maybe?
Only problem that I see is having to return to the main page, click on the the story again in order to see the latest comments. It appears that this happens until the comment page is full, then the comments stay posted.
Im patient, and know that all of the bugs will be worked out. Im just glad to read the articles again, and view comments.

Not thrilled about an edit function. One of the things which has made your CTH comments stand apart, is that one must take a modicum of care (and thought) to post, because it is permanent. Keeps the riff-raff down, ha!
Additionally, when users are able to reply to each other sometimes the threads get long and conversational. Coming in and editing later can RUIN the context of what was said by others. It is essentially erasing history and facts.
Missing the notifications, as you can’t have conversation when you have no idea if someone has replied to you.
Also, would like a way to stay signed in. Currently have to enter name and email for every comment.

The site was established and maintained according to very specific standards. While we all feel the pressure or anxiety for expediency, anything that would sacrifice long term values and standards for a “quick fix” might not be in the community’s or founder’s best interest.
Bring on your insights and research en masse (that’s the important thing) and we’ll all deal with any temporary “shortcomings” (according to what we’ve become comfortable and familiar with).
These are extraordinary times to which we’ve been bred….

Browsing via desktop has been most successful, especially today and right now.

Problems encountered are mostly deployment related, IMHO.
Last night:You turned on comments and said “let er rip”. I did a couple test comments that appeared to go through, then comments froze at #600, another thread at a different number that never changed. Figured you turned it off. Testing.
during this time, CTH on windows desktop worked fine. All new threads were loading, some without comment ability which you commented on.
iPhone and iPad functionality was sketchy. Could only get to your recent posts by going to the “recent posts” on R side, or @thelastrefuge2 directly. No comment abilities from IOS.
This evening(1700 MT): full visibility and comments ability on desktop and it appears full visibility and functionality on both iDevices.
Chalked much of the problems I encountered up to background work being done, but I have to admit, I had to work to not take it personally as this is my true social network like you mention above.

On one of the last comment threads before liftoff, the trolls were dropping site recommendations for gay dating sites. Saw a few and hopped on with Troll begone messaging…the last time I did it I posted “this is not a gay dating site”.
Well, guess what? All of the other comments were removed(not sure if by mod or AutomattiKKK)and my comment was the only one remaining. Someone commented that the site is not a dating site and why am I so homophobic. I swear the site they link was different than the one that I posted my reply to. JUST AMAZING.
Sorry if that made anyone look bad, but I felt a lot better when SD explained that they would do EXACLY these types of things in their efforts to ISOLATE, RIDICULE and MARGINALIZE.
