As we work through bugs associated with CTH 2.0 launch, consider this a thread to provide information, report user issues, ideas and concerns. Please read the information provided below as it might answer many questions in advance.
Today, December 2nd, was our official eviction date as established by WordPress/Automattic two weeks ago. Considering the scale of moving 11 years worth of data (56,000 articles, massive media file, 7.2 million comment library), the tech team did a great job.
That said, we anticipated some issues, are encountering others, and we are carefully working through a checklist.
First, we wanted to migrate the data and site in the least disruptive way to the CTH community that provided continuity and familiarity.
Despite the tech issues with the disconnect from WP/Automattic servers to our own proprietary server system, that overarching goal was achieved. Now we are getting into the weeds.
First, some background so everyone can understand the big picture issues. Obviously WordPress/Automattic wanted us gone; however, in hindsight the unspoken purpose and motive behind our eviction is now making a lot more sense.
Based on insider information, there were two distinct issues that merged; sunlight upon them is against the interests of massive multi-billion dollar organizations, but at CTH the truth has no agenda, so here’s the inside explanation as it appears.

♦ Ideology – As they said in their notification to deplatform, the “content” of CTH was against the terms of WordPress/Automattic. This is not really a surprise as Big Tech looks for any obtuse or obscure reason to silence voices that are not in political alignment with their goals. The decision by WP/Automattic is not surprising even if they would never publicly admit it. Quite simply, this battle has been going on for years and now it is at an inflection point. Alternates to the grip of Big Tech are starting to emerge, slowly.
♦ Business – In addition to the ideological nature of the motive, there is another element which has gained significant clarity in the past few weeks. Our CTH community did something WP/Automattic never expected… we were too successful.
The scale of the CTH reader and commenting community literally was/is a rebel alliance reeking havoc inside a host network that didn’t like our voice. Simultaneously, we were chewing up massive amounts of their server space and capacity. This is very interesting.
According to insiders who have reached out and shared their opinion, what CTH evolved into is far more than a simple blogging community. Essentially the metaphor provided is this: “you took a blog platform and built a mini FaceBook social media enterprise within it.” The CTH community, our extended global family of ragtag misfits, was/is using CTH as a network of like-minded friends to share and discuss information.
You might say well, isn’t that what a blogging community is all about… and the answer eleven years ago was a simple: yes. However, our assembly became much, much, much larger than a simple community.
The scale of having up to 25,000 simultaneous users is way beyond a simple blogging platform. CTH became a social media enterprise. Discussions, information sharing, networking and contact with each-other is what social media was all about.
The FaceBook social media model is essentially operating in our site. That’s an awesome outcome, but one WP/Automattic did not expect. In essence CTH hijacked the platform to create a social network.
All of that engagement costs the host (WP/Automattic) server space and massive amounts of bandwidth. Despite my paying for their hosting services (business plan), we were essentially living cheap, almost rent free, inside their platform. Once we realized this was also an element of concern, some prior work by WP/Automattic to control CTH made sense.
There is an interesting conversation happening in the coffee shops of Big Tech about this issue… WordPress/Automattic can never admit the unique financial problem that CTH created for them.
The business model for WP/Automattic is to sell the potential outcome of exactly what we achieved. WP/Automattic pitches their business plan by saying you can build a blogging community and share your voice.
Well, we took them up on that offer ten years ago and we built the biggest community within their system; a massive community. We did exactly what the marketing people at WP/Automattic say is possible… except we did it bigger than they ever imagined. Our success at achieving the scale of community created a problem they can never admit.
If WordPress/Automattic were to be honest now about the financial impact of users -like CTH- achieving success, they would be undercutting the entire marketing/advertising plan of their hosting platform.
The honest sales approach from WP/Automattic would be to say: we can provide you a platform, up until you achieve significant success; and then, it is in our financial interests, for you to leave. Obviously WP/Automattic would never sell their product if they were honest… so they look for reasons, any reasons, to control or eliminate the community. THAT appears to have been a big part of what drove their decision.
It was not a surprise that WP/Automattic kicked-us out immediately after they went into the market to get more money to expand operations. CTH was costing them money, perhaps a lot of money. As a consequence not only were they hosting a voice against their ideological interests, that voice was so big it was costing them money. Combine both factors and you get the insufferable excuse “your content” is against our interests.
Believe me, this financial ‘cost to host‘ issue is a big topic in the background of conversations in the tech industry. The hypocrisy of selling a product they do not really want to see succeed is a very interesting conversation. Sunlight upon this motive in the world of tech is kinda funny. The Automattic members can never allow this to be widely known; but the people within the machinery know exactly what the issues are.
♦ So, what does that mean to CTH 2.0? Well, we have a big server network hosting us right now – and it ain’t cheap (by a long shot). To give you an idea of how unique this situation is, they cannot even calculate the cost until they see the results over the next month or so.
This is uncharted territory. Our commenting community, specifically the number of simultaneous users, is essentially like a mini Facebook inside their server network. No-one has any idea how to manage this outside of pre-existing social media platforms that generate millions/billions in upfront revenue and construct proprietary and dedicated server farms.
It’s a good problem.. so everyone says.
It’s a good problem from the perspective of those who would love to monetize our network/community. However, that is not the purpose of our assembly.
To the extent our community will need money to securely exist and thrive safely, publicly and with privacy protections on an independent platform, that is ok. However, the true value in our community is our fellowship and the search for the truth.
♦ To the DETAILS:
The comment restoration function was a significant hurdle for a variety of reasons previously explained. One of the issues moving forward is the type of software that drives the comment function. We are trying to use the most private system possible that also provides security. The WordPress/Automattic system used a combination of proprietary creation and a system called JetPack.
Jetpack has some functional issues and is inherently connected to the comment function. When JetPack was uninstalled, it impacted the comment platform; that is why “likes” and the familiar embed Wavy avatars were lost. We are looking for alternate options that we can add to the site to restore those features and also add an edit button (if possible) to the comments. In the interim if you register a gravatar with your email address your custom avatar will follow you.
There is a comment system that most platforms are using called Disqus. If you let Disqus run ads in the comment space they provide the comment software free. However, Disqus does track users and I am not too happy with the privacy aspect. That would be a last resort, and only if they will set-up a custom privacy component.
If you are having issues with the comment feature or site access, feel free to provide feedback below and we will attempt to compile and/or assist as we move forward.
Love to all,
~ Sundance

The site is not rendering correctly: I’m seeing a burgundy background and all the text isn’t formatting right.
I get that same formatting affect on my iphone. On my PC it registers correctly. But it was like that before the move… and still is after.
Let’s see what happens!
posting to Parler doesn’t work. FB, Twitter does.
I tried updating the site all day but no change until after 5:00 pm.
That said, congratulations on what, even to a non-techie, was clearly a herculean achievement.
Also, I think I speak for many by saying that a paid subscription to this refuge is a no-brainer – I’M IN!
Thanks Sundance.
Observation:
If I post a comment, the thread here reverts back to just two comments.
If I then go back to the home/landing page, ctl-f5 and then come back to this thread all of the comments appear again.
This is in Firefox on my desktop PC.
I’m on Brave and same issues.
Sundance, Ad Rem, et. al.-
I work in a fairly Sr. position at the private company that currently owns Disqus.
I have direct access to the the most Sr. Executives at said company.
If I can be of any help, I’d be happy to discuss privately. If interested, let me know and I can verify myself for you.
Thank you….I’ll relay your message.
I apologize if this is a duplicate but the previous time the comment never displayed….
PLEASE DO NOT USE DISQUS…
I’ve had issues with Disqus not accepting non-offensive, conservative comments on The American Thinker. From Wikipedia:
“Disqus does moderate communities which use its service, by treating some comments as spam, when clearly they are not, in other words, it censors political comment, possibly by key word detection, leading to controversial moderation in some communities.[original research?] ”
” the Disqus widget acts as a web bug which tracks a user’s activities, even when they are not logged in, across different sites that use the Disqus commenting system. Information tracked by Disqus, which may be disclosed to third parties, includes pseudonymous analytics data, such as a user’s IP address, their web browser version and installed add-ons, and their referring pages and exit links.[27] Although these data are referred to by Disqus as “Non-Personally Identifiable Information”, such data, when aggregated, has been shown to be usable for de-anonymizing users.[25]”

It Works !
Thanks to all for a great job !
I have been suffering WITHDRAWAL for the last few days !
All better now!
Everything works for me. Thank you Sundance.
The Truth. Yes, the Truth always makes Liars and Deceivers uncomfortable.
In seeking Truth, let us all work hard at bringing Big Tech down.
Good to be back..
Thank You Sundance and CTH Crew…
I don’t know if anyone else has reported this, but the site essentially froze for me this morning and I saw no new comments or posts until just now. I checked continually throughout the day on my phone, desktop and iPad. All frozen.
But I am absolutely thrilled that I can now see everything! Thanks to all of you and God bless.
Yes this is the 1st update since this morning. I could search the website name and 12/02 to find the new posts but there were no comments and when you selected home, there would only be the information from this morning.
Site started working for mid-afternoon and has been very busy ever since.
I also use the Brave browser (Mac devices) and have not seen any of the disappearing comments described by other users.
Thanks to all involved in the effort to switch over. Especially, over Thanksgiving weekend.
Earlier I was not able to see recent comments, seems fine now
SD and staff we owe you a Thanksgiving dinner…..i will hit the donate button instead.
Keep the Faith and Blessings to all
Feels cleaner and lighter TBH.
If I cannot see any comments or new update ones don’t appear, it encourages me to post, then miraculously they appear.
Many thanks for the transparency, insight and direction of travel. This is the best of what the superhighway offers!
Yes. Thanks.
The privacy is a big priority for me.
A little bit of money every month it’s not a problem for me.
Getting better hour by hour. I’m fine with the existing full site page form on my iPhone. In fact I prefer it as all the links are visible. The old mobile version was so basic I would go to the bottom and switch to the full site.
I just made another donation to help defray the expense of moving. Thanks for all you do Sundance !
You guys at CTH have done an outstanding job so far. rome wasn’t built in a day and if it takes a few extra hours to get things up to par I’m sure the loyal members of this community have no problems with that.
Keep doing what you CTH. The truth must be known.
I sure could use an edit function. 🙂
Me too.
Looks good on my iPhone tho
I am in awe that you were able to migrate it all, period.
Thank you for the explanation though, it makes sense. I think we all have known that the Treehouse is unique and I definitely feel privileged and gratitude.
I’m just hanging out and rolling with it and known that you created something awesome and it will continue.

An interesting conundrum … so basically their business model is based on a host of gnat-like communities, none too big or too successful to tax their system. As long as there are many small gnats, their cash flow is positive; when the gnat grows into an elephant it overwhelms them.
Or put another way, WP/Auto are the parents telling the twenty-five year old that it’s time to move out.
And the success of CTH is also a rebuke to the media and big tech; y’all try to throttle the free flow of information and those that don’t agree with your dictatorial control will just go elsewhere. And even CTH can evolve into its own Facebook-like community, with a system of generating ads to support the community, as long as we keep our focus on who and what we are.
Once upon a time communicating over the early internet was based on command line prompts and “purists” were aghast when WYSIWYG came along and saw the intro of ads. Ad revenue can be an advantage if the CTH community maintains itself and doesn’t try to get greedy.
So the ongoing evolution of the rebel alliance will be an adventure to relish.
OTOH, the happiness w/o the image is just lacking …
Is this bold test
Yeah?

Test #3 third time’s the charm I hope
Ha-ha. The WordPress business sounds like the health club/gym business. They count on people signing up and then only coming once or twice but not canceling the membership.
One of my dad’s friends ran some health spas in the 1970’s and 80’s. He told my dad if even half of the members started coming regularly he’d have to double the size of the place.
Credit card companies have a similar model. They hate people who pay their bill in full every month – call us “floaters” and wish they could get rid of us.
Heh, heh.
Thank you.???
Sundance, Thanks for explaining the issue around saving all the prayer requests. That really hit home with me and gets to the core of what this place is all about, besides the great intellectual content of current events.
I didn’t try commenting until today due to the problems you described and I’m just happy to see some of the usual characters hanging on their branches and shaking this HUGE tree!
I imagine you got a little feel for how many people come here when you ventured across the country spreading the light on the truth so don’t hesitate to ask for whatever it takes to keep this tree healthy.
And give my regards to all involved who handled this monstrous task….and succeeded.

It would be nice to see the videos and copied content, embedded within the comments. Now if one clicks on a link , it move from this site to the link site.
johnnyfandango if you right-click on the link and choose Open in a New Tab you can keep CTH open. Close the new tab when done.
It’s a little buggy still, but dramatic improvements happen each day, and I no longer seem to be getting directed to WordPress which was going on a lot on Sunday. Please consider the following suggestions/requests:
– a dedicated CTH log-in for approved users with comments permissions that is independent of WP, Facebook, disqus, etc. Create a “member / nonmember” structure. A nonmember could still post a comment, but that would get more moderator attention than a member comment. NRO used to do this back in the 2000’s, and the preferred commenter feature helped their mods quite a bit. For example, they did not approve non-preferred comments on weekends, only preferred commenters could post. We received light moderation and policed ourselves.
– as others have noted, restore the “like” function
– If possible, block comments where only a link is provided but no comment. If commenters simply want to retweet something, they should go do that on Twitter. The comments get clogged up with what are basically retweets. CTH is not Twitter, and we shouldn’t be sending Twitter business anyway. Youtube as well…at least require people to write something as to why they’re linking to youtube…even if they’re just sharing something humorous.
You guys are doing great. Keep it up. Looking forward to getting the site back to normalcy with analysis and commentary in addition to the video links and other reading suggestions you often post here.
Oh, and if possible, give us the ability to sort comments chronologically (as is done now), based on likes, or so I can just see my own comments in a list to more quickly reply to those who are communicating with me.
I find the Twitter links to be very informative at this stage of the game.
It’s endlessly amazing to me, watching what CTH has endured the past few weeks since being banned, that people are like “Oh, but Twitter is different. As long as people say what they’re allowed to say by Twitter, I find it informative.”
The time has come to let Twitter go.
thank you for bringing this up. on nov 24 on the first page of the pres politics open thread there were 39 embedded links from twitter. on nov 26 there were 33 embedded links from twitter on the first page of the pres politics open thread. on dec 2 there were only 6 links from twitter on the first page , 9 on the second. my vote is for less twitter and more of what posters here think
testing reply
I agree. However, a brief introduction of what is being linked should still be demanded and is helpful.
Well, unless it’s citizen posting tweets by our President.
Those speak for themselves!!
(There could be other exceptions…)
I love the embedded Twit links and Youtube links. I don’t have a Twitter account nor do I intend to sign on to Jack’s dark universe. Neither do I have a Facebook account, much to the chagrin of some family members and former students.
So thank you, to all of you, and to SD, for providing some Twitter and FB access in regard to selective, pertinent, and Treeper selected, content.
I APPRECIATE IT.
Thank you, Sundance, for the explanation.
Basically, The Conservative Treehouse became TOO successful — so congratulations!
Comments/Suggestions:
1) As of now, we basically all ‘look the same’ with our avatars. I checked out the link you provided for creating my own — only it was Greek to me. There must be an easier way to do it, no?
2) A link at the bottom of the page that takes one back to the top — would be great to have.
3) During the ‘black out’, I checked out other links on the CTH site. The “Conservative Heroes & Legislative Contacts List” is severely out-of-date. I’ve been here for years, and had never clicked on that link before. So, perhaps it is not even needed.
Where was instructions listed for changing your avatar?
There is a hyperlink labeled ‘register a gravatar’ within Sundance’s commentary.
My eyes quickly crossed when trying to read/understand the instructions.
Greek!
Cannot help myself…..
WE’RE A HIT!
OK, done now.
Is a Gravatar account a WP product? If so, why would I want to keep it after the way they treated you Sundance?
I had to create an account in order to comment on WP. Since CTH is no longer associated with WP do I really need to keep my account? I would rather not be associated with them any longer if possible.
I feel the same way.
I tried to create a Gravatar again after I deleted my WP account, but in order to set up a Gravatar again, it looks like I need to open another WP account.
I decided not to do it again. No more WP for me!
You should be able to go to https en.gravatar.com and register this website with your account there. WordPress is registered if you have a WordPress account, but I think you can delete that registration if you want. I registered theconservativetreehouse.com (Title: The Last Refuge) and that’s how I can now see my Avatar. I still have my WP account though I don’t think it matters.
Ditto. I decided to pass too. But I miss my Aslan gravatar.
That being said, I’ll live.
“Gravatar is a service for providing globally unique avatars and was created by Tom Preston-Werner. Since 2007, it has been owned by Automattic, having integrated it into their WordPress.com blogging platform. Wikipedia”
So, in other words, Gravatar is not our friend.
How does one make an avatar using their own photo/picture — as opposed to one generated automatically?
Ad rem — like your adorable kitty cat!
I suspect there will be a way to do what you describe later on down the road, but sundance merely provided the link for those who want a gravatar right away or who want to preserve one they already have?
I would dearly love to make a custom one – I even have started collecting pictures as candidates – but I know, again, that dessert (these fun things) will come later after we get through all the meat and potatoes…

WOW!!
All this time I thought all this hi-tech stuff was to make everything easier, quicker, cheaper and it’s so smart, it fixes itself.
Heck, it’s harder, slower, more expensive and dumber than I am.
Sundance,
First, you owe us NO apologies. Instead we owe you deep gratitude for your efforts to preserve the Republic. Second, you are dead on about Automattic and why they took this step. You exceeded their paradigm and they could not justify the traffic based on their business model. A good problem to have. But beware, your next fight will be with Google and the payment processors. Do not be surprised if Paypal deplatforms you. The major founder is Pierre Omidyar who is a major Marxist. You should start informing yourself on the payment processors and their politics. The major banks will be your enemy. You should investigate Stripe as they are an excellent service but I do not know of their politics. You should also look to set up for payment in bitcoin.
I would also investigate 2Checkout. They are a well established service with good tools and are pretty well just focused on growing revenue. Another revenue stream would be to sell merchandise from print on demand services. I personally cannot wait to have have a treehouse mug. No upfront investment is necessary.
It seems back to normal for me. Lol. I’m predominately on my phone using brave. I do have turn off the blockers though.
Had some problems as described by many of you. I don’t know how I resolved hem, just kept trying to update my Imac and the log in. Seems that everything is working great on this one. Have not tried using the Iphone yet.
I will happily put up with any inconvenience until it all gets worked out, becuase IMO there isno other place that has not been compromised in some way.
I’m absolutely certain that prayer mad this happen and will keep it going.
God Bless the Treehouse and all the Treepers. He is in charge.
?
Good job. Stay with it.

Sundance and team, I went to donate and it flips my information around and redirects me to the previous page. I filled in all information including my credit card information and then it flips to say Tunisia. Somethings up with the donation page.
My donation worked as if there had been no change. Per usual, I printed a receipt copy, and saved it on my desktop as well. SD, please check to ensure that it landed in your end zone.
Football reference is due to withdrawal – by choice, but withdrawal nonetheless.
So, if I understand you correctly, Treehouse is the unintended, conservative Facebook of its time. Now THAT is truly an accomplishment!
There are thousands of ‘members’ – and some of us happen to be addicted to the truth- truth that is served up daily on this site.
Bottom line and more importantly, bottom dollar, if it takes greenbacks to keep this chat room fully operational, and functioning at full capacity, count me in. I surmise there are thousands who agree that a minimal annual fee is a doable expense.
As this “WAR” progresses more Conservatives will find this TREE OF TRUTH. And more revenues will generate. God Bless everyone who comes here to seek the truth. God Speed, lets all give the necessary financial fertilizer to this tree and may we win in the end. I AM IN.
Thank you, Sundance and the entire team that lives behind the scene!
I am so happy to be able to comment and to come to this great community you’ve started. It is amazing to me what has become of it over the years and it is all due to your dogged pursuit of the truth!
Let’s roll! 🙂
Welcome back – it was a soft landing! Willing to pay for the privacy.
If CTH had been “too successful” at pushing a Left-leaning narrative, then WP would have happily let them keep going and simply passed higher costs onto all their other customers!
The part they could not handle was the realization that there are MILLIONS of people in the country who are not listening to the MSM, are not buying the China-flu “Scamdemic” narrative, and who were effectively communicating with each other regarding TRUTH…and there were more and more people jumping onboard every day!
Knowing what we now know about the coordinated effort to steal this election, they HAD to shut down CTH when they did because too many people were connecting the dots and passing on information that TPTB needed to stay out of the public eye! The Hunter Biden laptop story showed them how well we were able to get information past their MSM gatekeepers and they could not let the same thing happen regarding the multi-state fraud they needed to commit in order to pretend that 80 million people voted for a senile 78 year old man who has been in politics for almost 50 years, is as corrupt as he is confused, and who didn’t even campaign!
Thank you Sundance, Ad Rem, Grandma, Stella, and the whole team – it is wonderful to be “together” again and to be able to share our thoughts, our hopes, our fears, and our plans! Continuing to pray for a miracle, because at this point that is what we are going to need!
“But God…..”
? …… and we’re all here paddling away at keeping the lights on! To those of you still fighting to find a way in, SD has been in meetings with the TEAM (engineers) to try and find workarounds and add the extra details to the site that many of you find missing.
Those of you who have emailed, please be patient. We have answered the questions we can, and simply are overwhelmed with the quantity of those that remain.
God Bless all of you Ad rem.
Patience people. Things will be so much nicer when they are done. Remember, they charge nothing for us to be here. I have never ever seen anyone with the CTH administration solicit funds. All donations.
?
I am certain you are speaking for many of us.
NO WORRIES. At last we are here back again together and thes rest will fall in line. Thanks to SD and all in adm for doing a great job.
Yes, ditto to thanks…
Meat and potatoes, Ad Rem, before we get our dessert! I get it!!
And a yummy roast it is, too.
Still not able to reply to someone else’s post?
Clicked the reply button to vikingmom, we are witnessing the last dying throes of the dinosaur news media. They are only useful for their sports reports, oh and weather forecasts which they at least occasionally get right.

Word press dumped the largest climate science site on the web https://wattsupwiththat.com/ a few months before they dumped CTH.
Though Watts Up With That is the most effective site countering the climate change scam and does have considerable traffic, I don’t believe it comes close to the traffic CTH has. So I reckon that ideology, and the impact of a site counter to the status quo, is a significant factor in the WordPress decision to dump CTH.
That reminds me, i need to go delete my account
Here’s a happy tnought. Deplorables broke the Dominion algorithms. Deplorables broke WordPress. When Sundance says, “There are more of us than there are of them, you better believe it!”

Thank you!
Kudos to your tech team. Well done.
Very grateful for what you and the team did. It’s seamless from the old one, except lacking the like function and the avatar, which is okay for me. Is there a way to retrieve the old comments stored in my wp account?
Just checked…we have six long pages of your past comments starting on 9/03/20. Does this sound right? I’d leave you a link, however, I don’t want to publicly release your private info. Sundance made of point of asking the team of engineers to transfer all 7,500,000 comments to the new 2.0 site.
Hold your ears folks…It’s Showtime!
Congratulations on your achievements. To reach this level of community is remarkable, and shows how much you Sundance, and the Treehouse is needed.
A problem I have is that the Older Comments arrow takes me back to a page that has only 2 comments.
Seems to be working.

Not watching the news much these days.
