The media and Canadian government discussions around the U.S-Canada trade and economic relationship, specifically as they pertain to the USMCA (CUSMA) continue to be fascinating.
As we noted over a year ago, the expressed perception from the Canadian side was remarkably disconnected from the most likely scenario.
The level of entrenched disbelief that the U.S. could completely separate from a trilateral trade deal in favor of a bilateral replacement has been remarkable to watch.
However, for the first time today Canadian media began admitting to themselves the USMCA can technically be terminated within six months; albeit buried at the end of the article.

When asked by Global News, Hoekstra would not say if the administration is considering ripping up the deal, which can be done by any party with six months’ formal notice.

The new “Gordie Howe Bridge” (Detroit-Windsor crossing) Canadians are so eager to claim they paid for, in fact, was built with other people’s money (financed/loans).
The loans will be paid back (iirc) by user fees from those who use the bridge, not Canadians.
Since a overwhelming amount of trade from Canada ALREADY crosses over the long established “Ambassador
bridge” (a 100% American-owned company), any traffic crossing the Gordie Howe Bridge would simply be diverted traffic that once crossed the Ambassador Bridge. (Canada “legally” pilfering $ from an American company to pay for “their bridge”)
President Trump wants just compensation for the losses.
I suspect, President Trump will get what he wants or, Mr Carny will get the crossed arms treatment from President Trump in return.
USTR Greer will then be instructed to hand deliver the “USA is Exiting USMCA” declaration, and Mr Carny can figure out how to repay the loans for the now completed (though closed)
Gordie Howe Bridge (Sans diverted import traffic revenue from the 100% American-owned Ambassador Bridge).
If that weren’t bad enough, if Carney balks, and the US exits the USMCA, there won’t be a whole lot of “import traffic revenues” crossing ANY bridge, and the cost of the Gordie Howe Bridge will, inevitably, come from the pockets of the Canadian people.

SD was correct as usual the other day when he pointed to July 20rh as a very important day. US meets with Mexico for the third time for full-on trade negotiations. If a positive framework emerges or, God bless us all, a full trade deal is agreed upon, the ticking clock for Canada really picks up steam. Carney, for all of his bluster and elbows up nonsense, will be in quite the pickle up north. He won’t be able to hide his lack of skill or knowledge any longer from the Canadian people. They will finally see he has been played, and truly has no clothes.
I wonder how this will affect the secession measure they’ll be voting on in Alberta in October.
