President Trump hosted Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in the Oval Office and took questions from reporters on Thursday. The majority of the question from both the U.S. and Norwegian media encompass the current effort to negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine.
One of the ceasefire ‘sticking points’ per se’, is that immediately following the breakout of the conflict the government of President Zelenskyy changed many of their constitutional rules to include the legal elimination of opposition parties in the country, removal of religion or faith-based social influence that runs counter to the Ukrainian Nazi mindset, the cessation of elections in Ukraine, and other “emergency measures” intended to assist the stability of Zelenskyy’s government as they entered a war footing.
The results of the legal changes and constitutional framework, which included non-recognition of any lost territory, is now being leveraged by Zelenskyy in negotiations for a ceasefire. President Zelenskyy is now saying the ceasefire terms proposed, which include accepting regional losses of geography to Russia, are not constitutionally possible and he has no power to agree to them.
In essence, Zelenskyy’s emergency government changed the constitutional power of the President, cemented a new constitutional status during war, and now says those previous changes make it impossible to accept proposed terms. This self-fulfilling creation, intentionally done with forethought for exactly this kind of current scenario, is the baseline for frustration toward the Ukraine position. I know that it was widely reported about a month or so ago (including here) that Trump had shut off the IC products (targeting, etc) but has he been forced to re-enabled because of this: somebody in the Senate, or an aide to a Senator, breathed in his ear that he would not only be impeached for not going along with this war (btw, I could not believe it when it started, as in “another trench war in Europe?!”) but the Senate would have the votes to convict. As close as the House is it would only take a few R’s, and knowing there would be a solid 47 D’s in the Senate…I could see this as an Et tu, Brutus moment delivered by 20 R Senators.
Because of this possibility, DJT could currently really between a rock/hard place. Of course, MAGA would lose their collective minds if this were to happen, but then what?

If the IC is hiding exactly how Much of What it has Where in Ukraine from the Executive Office (Trump), that makes it impossible for the Executive Office to just pull everything, because he has no idea what constitutes “everything”. The two Koreas (NK and SK) ceased fighting over 70 years ago. They never signed a peace treaty and neither of them recognizes the other as a legitimate country. Each of them still maintain the official position that they are the government of all the Korean peninsula.
The settlement of the Korean war was an Armistice not a peace treaty. Officially and legally the war is still unsettled. But for all practical purposes they have a peace settlement and exist as two separate countries.
There is no reason Ukraine and Russia could not do something similar.
Call it an armistice instead of a treaty. But stop the fighting, stop the killing, freeze the lines where they are. Each side will govern the territories they now control as they wish.
Zelensky’s game-playing over supposed constitutional limits are just excuses.
