This was decades ago. Back then everyone considered this crap aspirational. Few people back then could have envisioned that it would morph into a control system. Maxime is the real deal but Pierre is even better. He’s been a libertarian since he was a kid.
Are you a Canadian? This guy, while he speaks well cost the Conservative the 2021 election and didn’t even win his own seat. He is a spoiler and a vote for him is a vote for Liberals. He can say whatever he wants because he knows he has a snowballs chance in hell of even winning his seat.
Being in government and not getting the jab, major props to him for that.
He hasn’t been in Parliament since 2019.
He ran for Conservative leader following the departure of Stephen Harper, but narrowly lost to Andrew Scheer. Scheer & Bernier then had a falling out, as Scheer essentially wanted Bernier to STFU about contentious topics. Bernier refused and was either kicked out or left the Conservatives, I don’t recall which.
Bernier founded his new party after that but, frankly, he’s been incompetent at building it into anything. He’s tried twice to win a seat in Parliament, including the same riding he once represented as a Conservative, and got soundly beaten both times.
The party will fall apart after he leaves it.
He’s right about a lot of things but Canadians generally refuse to admit ugly truths about our condition. We prefer to stay stuck in some time warp fantasy that the country remains as it was circa the mid to late 90s when we were far more functional (not without substantial flaws mind you) than it is today.

I’ve stated elsewhere, most people from Canada with which I have contact think I’m brainwashed because I tell them “the media lies to you!” Canada will have to collapse before the MAGA USA can even begin to help them I fear. What did Canada tariff before the trade war with the U.S.? (98 per cent of goods entering Canada from the U.S. have no tariffs) –
How do Canada’s tariffs work? Tariffs are governed by the Customs Tariff Act, which sets a general rate of 35 per cent for goods entering Canada. This may seem high, but this baseline rate is almost never used.
This is because Canada, along with more than 160 other countries, is part of the WTO, and all WTO members have “Most-Favoured-Nation” (MFN) status when trading with each other.
All of Canada’s key trading partners are WTO members and they pay lower MFN rates — which vary from product to product. The rate can be even lower if the two countries have their own trade agreement.
Under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), 98 per cent of goods entering Canada from the U.S. have no tariffs – or at least, they didn’t before the trade war.
Many goods can enter Canada tariff-free under MFN status, but Canada places higher default tariffs on some products. Our MFN rate for clothing products averages around 18 per cent, which is partly to help domestic producers compete fairly, but also in the hope of lowering the number of products made under poor labour conditions entering Canadian markets, Harrison says.
But when it comes to the dairy industry, tariffs get a little more complicated.
What about dairy?
Canada uses “supply management” policies for certain agricultural products to control prices, maintain food safety standards and protect the dairy, egg and poultry industries from foreign competition policies which have long irritated trade partners such as the U.S. and New Zealand, another big dairy producer.
The policies aim to limit how much of each product — butter, cheese, ice cream, eggs, etc. — can be imported. Importers apply for a percentage of the quota, and are able to bring in that quantity with no tariffs.
Trump has claimed Canada is “ripping [the U.S.] off” by putting tariffs of over 200 per cent on dairy products.
But those tariffs only kick in after the U.S. surpasses the quantity it’s permitted to sell in Canada tariff-free – a number negotiated by the Trump administration in 2018 as part of CUSMA.
What Trump gets wrong about Canada-U.S. dairy trade
“Unless or until you meet that threshold, you do not pay,” Harrison said, noting that the U.S. has never reached the quota, which the U.S. dairy industry acknowledged earlier this month.
During the negotiation of CUSMA, Canada agreed to increase over time the quota of U.S. products that can enter the market tariff free.

The choice will be voting your conscience – as in if you want true change with proper conservative ideas, you will need to vote PPC
However the dilemma is: if you do vote PPC candidate, the PPC candidate probably will not have a large enough share of the vote in the riding to make it into parliament.
Last election none of the PPC candidates made it into parliament 🙁 They got votes, just not a majority anywhere.
Versus if you vote “Purple” on the “conservatives”, their candidate would likely gather enough votes to end up in parliament
So a vote for PPC might end up as a vote for the Liberal party in competitive ridings.
Similar to how a vote for the NDP is pretty much equal to voting Liberal, as NDP has had policies and parliamentary voting exactly in line with the Liberal party: they were in a coalition.
That being said if everyone had the same realizations at the same time, everyone would vote PPC, the Conservative party would be the PPC party and Canada would be better off.
I do not think Canada can survive another 4 years of Liberal rule.

The choice right now seems to be:

* go down under slow with a glimmer of hope (Conservative party)
Conservatives lost 21 seats to Bernier’s grift. We never would have had Trudeau if the PPC hadn’t split the vote.
2021 election: Erin O’Toole was a weak conservative PM candidate.
In the end if I recall correctly he was running almost exactly the same policies as the liberals on the major topics.
Voting conservative was voting for “Liberal Light”.
Might as well vote for the guy with the great hair then (Trudeau).
So what I am saying is the Conservatives were not entirely without fault, and it wasn’t the fault of PPC alone that they made themselves hard to elect.
With Polievre the guy can debate, he has good points, and an sensible opinion on the economy at least. That is already 3 more things than O’Toole had.
But Polievre is still hugging the purple line on policy. (my interpretation though)
In any case any future government will have a hard time making their policy into law as Trudeau appointed / stacked the whole senate with a Liberal majority that will take at least 10 years to unroll in a best case scenario.
I am a Canadian regular here. Pierre is no fraud. He is running against a system that is hammering him from all sides…including the Conservative insiders. I support what Trump is doing down south but he’s put Pierre in an extremely difficult electoral position. Pierre’s supporters recognize this and are cutting him slack if it will help him defeat the Liberals.. Finally the People’s Party is not growing…I’ve been to the rallies and Bernier’s supporters are abandoning him for Pierre.
I agree. The remarks by President Trump about Governor Trudeau and about Canada becoming the 51st State unintentionally caused huge numbers of Canadians to “rally to the flag” and the Liberal Party. This even though previously a majority of Canadians had little love for Trudeau and the Liberal Party after nine years of his disastrous leadership as PM. This all but forced Poilievre to speak out against the U.S. for him to have any chance to win the upcoming election. Whether Americans like Poilievre or not, Canada led by the Liberals with Carney as PM will be a terrible outcome for Canada and imho make Canada increasingly a national security risk for the U.S.

I agree with much of your post, however I’m a bit more optimistic that the Canadian people will figure this out and right their ship. They are in the waking up stage of exposing the corruption and informing the masses of the policies that must change. Once the electorate understands that massive immigration, oppressive regulations, DEI policies and punitive tariff games are what their govt. is doing, then they will bring the velvet hammer down.
Right now they seem passive, but many are seeking truth and they will revolt on their own timing. Canadians appear to be a unique combination of US independent types and reserved UK/EU types, a hybrid of combined values. We can only watch and support them, but we have little left in the tank, as we fight a real battle here at home. When the world understands that the US must remain strong and free, then everyone will prosper and be secure. Msr. Bernier seems to support MAGA policies, America First and the positions of PDJT. I have said often that I believe the four terrible and costly years we here experienced under Biden Inc served their purpose. Perhaps the Canadian silent majority will rise up and sweep Mr Poillievre to victory. The polls are never the true measurement of the electorate mindset, so the media hype in favor of Carney is unreliable. Maybe with some of Mr. Bernier’s voters, putting Canada first, then Mr P could win.

Yes, but he also stated that he talks pro immigration so he gets the votes in the immigrant riding. They say anything to get elected, so may temper his views later. So as Bernier mentioned, until they support business, export resources and reduce regulation, their economy will suffer.

TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday the key question in Canada’s election is who is best to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump while his Conservative rival argued that Carney doesn’t represent change after a decade of Liberal Party rule.
Conservative Pierre Poilievre said during the French-language leaders’ debate Canada needs change and Carney is just like his predecessor Justin Trudeau.
“Mr. Poilievre is not Justin Trudeau. I’m not Justin Trudeau either. In this election the question is who is going to face Mr. Trump,” Carney said.
Trump’s trade war and threats to make Canada the 51st state have infuriated Canadians and led to a surge in Canadian nationalism that has bolstered Liberal Party poll numbers ahead of the April 28 vote.
In a mid-January poll by Nanos, Liberals trailed the Conservative Party by 47% to 20%. In the latest Nanos poll released Wednesday, the Liberals led by 8 percentage points. The January poll had a margin of error 3.1 points while the latest poll had a 2.7-point margin.
“Carney, who played safe, did not make the kind of big mistakes that could have altered the dynamic of the race in Quebec,” said Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal. “I don’t think the debate will have a major impact on the race in Quebec, which remains dominated by the Liberals.”

Canada unfortunately is a loser nation just like the EU. They care massively jealous of America and cant stand that we are the global leaders. BOO HOO to them. They really should just bow down on bended knee to our great president Trump and become our 51st state.
That attitude is why Carney is winning now. Before the tariff war erupted last month Carney was losing to Pierre P by 47% to 20%.

Now Carney is winning. The tariff issue could have waited until after the election and could have been quietly and more diplomatic. President Trump is very charming and persuasive in private!

I would say its a good time to drop the subsidy on CAD media and let them earn their own money instead of taking handouts. Might make them make content that people actually want to see.

Way off base here. Maxime will never get a seat in Parliament. Pollievre could be the best thing that ever happened to Canada. The first libertarian Conservative in years. Pro pipeline, pro tax cuts, the whole deal. Please stop dumping on him, or read his book. You are not characterizing him accurately at all.
Bernier isn’t in government and can’t win a seat for himself much less for PPC candidates in the rest of Canada. His party gets just enough of the vote to split the conservative voters and let the Liberals win. There are more than a few Canadians that think that the Liberal party is backing Bernier and his party for the vote split. Bernier was a Conservative but quit the party when there was a leadership vote and he didn’t win. Take anything he says about the Conservative party and the Conservative leader with a grain of salt.
I know little to nothing about politics in Canada but I had read that their problem with splitting derives from having about 7 parties instead of just the two corrupt ones we have in the U.S. ?
So is the problem more that you have one guy splitting the conservative party or that you have 7 to split the whole election?
I believe Max Bernier & Tucker Carlson made a huge mistake & spread complete lies in a poor and pathetic attempt to split the vote.

The point of splitting the vote is a good one.
People still have a choice they can vote according to their strict ideology, or they can decide strategically.
Strategic voting is super critical if you are in a competive riding / district.
If you are a true blue conservative, you might like Maxine’s policies better.
But is it better to get 60% of your ideal policy by voting conservatives
Or 0% by voting PPC, NPD or Liberal.
Historically PPC has never won a riding and those can be considered lost votes. Sadly though because Maxine has his heart and his policies in the right place.
But a PPC landslide wont happen, unless everyone switches from Conservative to PPC.
With the press against the PPC (because Canadian media get … approx. 600 million CAD from the government?)

Unfortunately we have this same problem here in Australia. I have talked to some of our politicians here and they are basically unaware that many to the things they believe in and want to implement as policies are Marxist in nature. It is a reflection of the indoctrination that our whole population gets throughout the entire education system and the main stream media.

Bureaucracy is a threat to democracy.
Been doing a lot of watching and reading on Canada. It does seem like a lost cause. The worst economic performance in the last 15 years of first world countries and predicted to perform worst for the next 25 years.
And on top of this Canada borders the world’s most dynamic economy in the world and never bothered much about defense. Natural resources per capita are off the charts. The scale of Canada’s failure is epic.
Canadians nonetheless carry a genuine air of self importance and superiority.
It really does seem like Canada will break apart.
Max is out for Max. You need to drift to the middle in order to get elected in Canada. Trump and every other politician does the same. Go hard to secure the base and soften to win the popular vote. Max is doing more harm than good.
