The Seven Last Statements of Christ by French composer Theodore Dubois. *
* The work is also known by a mistranslation “The Seven Last Words of Christ,” but in the original French title (Les Sept Paroles du Christ ) the term Paroles is “statements,” as there are more than just 7 words in the cantata!
I used this in my Latin courses (I (usually) taught at Catholic schools, so nobody objected) and the students were usually quite taken by the work. It was played at my Catholic parish in Dayton in the post-WW II era when I was a child, and I thought it was just wonderful when I heard it in the First Grade.
I never experienced a Catholic upbringing, but it is wonderful.
It was many years after my early adulthood when a cousin of mine – who is also not Catholic but who volunteered for many years in a Catholic church and school – invited me to a few services to “hear what the fuss was about.” Wow. What a magnificent tradition.
You might also enjoy this 6-minute motet by Austrian symphonist Anton Bruckner: Os Iusti (from Psalm 36)
One of the miracles of the work is that Bruckner finds such a rich texture using only the “white keys” of the piano, so to speak, i.e. a scale based on F but with a natural B, not a B-flat.
“Os justi meditabitur sapientiam: et lingua ejus loquetur judicium. Lex Dei ejus in corde ipsius: :et non supplantabuntur gressus ejus.”
“The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just.
The law of his God is in his heart: and his feet do not falter.
See the link above for another wonderful work, a short motet by the great Austrian symphonist Anton Bruckner.

We watched “I Still Believe” last night. Jeremy Camp’s song “This Man” speaks to this day, reminding us of our need to acknowledge Christ’s sacrifice so we may be Saved by the Blood:
“In only a moment truth was seen
Revealed this mystery
The crown that showed no dignity, He wore
And the King was placed for all the world to show disgrace
But only beauty flowed from this place
Would you take the place of this man?
Would you take the nails from His hands?…”

Beautiful!
Mathew26:36: “45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “[c]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour [d]is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.46 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”
It always brings tears to my eyes. The struggle our Lord was having in The Garden of Gethsemane, knowing what was coming and knew exactly what must be done.
A circling crowded host is spread upon the vast and martial plain:
The legions of the Enemy draw nigh,
Drunk with the honeyed gall of hate and nourished to a heart profane,
Enslaved to Night by Mordor’s will beneath the Window of the Eye.
If out from deep Abyss could storm be poured from vintage stores of rage,
New roil of death from ancient evil flow,
Spill Nothing down upon the world, make null this frail and mortal Age,
Begrudging e’en the breath a man might in his dying moment know:
Such End as that is what the Night would bring, if none but we remained
Beneath this wing-belabored, cloud-wracked sky.
If swords of men, though bright and keen, were left to us our only friend,
The walls of hearth and home behind would soon forever broken lie.
But out of Time and Time beyond the measured riddle of our days,
Tomorrow and Tomorrow’s long-ago,
The sternness and the tenderness of Love’s sweet-temp’ring, gentle grace
In secret binds the prison chains upon the Once and Never Foe.
The ramparts of that Shadow, black and cold, will ne’er again be found;
The stones will shiver, each his ending flee.
The earth herself her mouth will open wide, e’en as they tumble down
Into a ruin great as that which brought the bending of the Sea.
Though high against the hidden stars stand yet the towers of the Night,
And lean with hateful gaze unto the West,
Swift-shattered, they shall vanish in the turning of the world to Light,
And in their fall the earth will as the gardens of the Shire be blessed.
Cry sad lament for Innocence, for Love who walked the shrouded Road,
Left bright of sun and pale of moon behind.
For grief exchanged he cheer and mirth, embraced the bitter doom forbode;
Yet in his sorrow shall the world a fount of summer gladness find.
And those of hearts wherein the beauteous hymn of trembling starlight dwells
Will see the Night bereft of hate’s desire,
For by that promise silver-clear like sweetly ringing Elven-bells ~ Each step endured by Love ~
The Ring draws ever nearer to the Fire.

If you’re a born-again believer in Christ, then YES, you WERE there. Romans, Galatians, and Ephesians (just to name a few) all teach that we have been crucified, buried, and raised with Christ. It is, after all, what baptism (the immersion kind) symbolizes. But here are some questions to think about: What part of you was there–body, soul, or spirit? What died and why? What part of you rose from the grave (hint: it wasn’t the same part of you that died)? And, perhaps, most importantly, SO WHAT? Or in other words, why does this make a difference in a Christian’s life?
I find it fascinating that two rituals of the Christian faith–the bread in the Lord’s Supper and baptism–clearly point to the importance of our co-identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, and yet, very very, VERY few believers know what it means or how it affects us NOW, this side of heaven.

We are all there in spirit, Praise God.

I grew up on Mahalia and still regularly listen to her album “I Believe” among other classics. She was one of a kind and taught me everything I needed to know about deep in your soul felt gospel music. I imagine she’s still headlining an angelic choir with her powerful voice and pure worship.
Betsy! We have missed you! Hoping and praying all is well….as well as you need it to be, and God’s Will.
And there is this:
Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him.35 As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.” Luke we, verse 34-35.
Sister Mary Agreda wrote, in one of her many books….that when Simeon was speaking this, the Babe in Mary’s arms cuddled closer to her as if in fear.
I left a message on the Open Thread, dear Aggiegirl. Thank you.
And how so very moving is what you have written here. The writing of Sister Mary Agreda especially, is bringing me to tears.
Here are two worthy essays which reveal the pathos of this sorrowful day, in anticipation of our risen Lord on Easter Sunday where we will all have joy on that morning.
This song kept going through my head all day yesterday. Thanks for posting. I couldn’t remember all the verses, hope you don’t mind if I post this video I found with all the verses.

One of my favorite Easter Songs sung by my favorite cousin.
Treepers, check your local theaters and (if it’s showing) see “His Only Son”, the holy week release from Angel Studios (the folks who are producing “The Chosen” series). It is a powerful telling of the story of Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac, and the trip to Mount Moriah.
It’s an unusual film as it deals with an Old Testament theme that does not get much attention outside the walls of the church.

I used to listen and watch Mahalia when I was a child in the 1950s. She came on KTVU Oakland channel two, early in the morning.
The first gospel song I learned to play on the piano and sing was “Move on up a little higher”, with which Mahalia had a number one hit in 1948, I think. I was pounding it out a few years ago, and was overheard by a passerby, who commented “say, nice blues!”. Funny.

A fabulous version of the song by Mahalia.
The Ed Sullivan show was on CBS from 1948 to 1971 and I doubt there was any other owner of a show or outlet that gave “African American” performers more of an opportunity to entertain millions during most of that “controversial” time than Ed did.
MeTV reruns of many of his edited shows every Sunday and most of the performers still provide enjoyable entertainment today IMO, as this Mahalia clip demonstrates, but the list of extremely talented black performers that were eagerly welcomed by Ed on his show is very long and legendary.
Perhaps some scowling embittered woke lefty lunatic will try to conjure up an allegedly inappropriate comment or quote from Ed and push to cancel, erase and defame him and his show.
It is always darkest before the dawn.
ALL praise to King Jesus!
I offered this under the Open Topic (q.v.)

Through the blood of Christ, thank you Lord!
Even Jesus must have felt; known,
what it is to be ‘alone’
And as much as he believed; he knew,
what lay ahead; life eternal,
perhaps
he (too) enjoyed
the three dimensional earthly life
Wow!
