Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appears on Sunday Morning Futures now hosted by Larry Kudlow who has replaced Maria Bartiromo. The primary topic of the conversation is the current state of the economy.
Secretary Bessent notes we have entered the phase of prior policy implementation where the economy now accelerates growth based on former policy changes including, targeted tax reductions, capital investment prioritization and expensing, regulatory changes and direct investment. GDP growth now looks to achieve 5% or more. WATCH:
Oil prices are the underlying friction within the economy creating higher gasoline and diesel prices. However, when you take the energy sector out of the inflation calculation, the current rate of wage growth is exceeding inflation.
Bessent also notes, currently the only oil not coming through the Strait of Hormuz is Iranian oil. Other than those supplies, oil flows through the Strait are at normal levels.

This would be counter to the interests of democrats who actively want the country to fail so they can gain and remain in power.

I don’t understand why the federal govt doesn’t buy/seize these closed refineries and use them expressly for military/national security purposes only! CA can stick it, along with other blue states continuing full steam ahead with green energy!
Also, it would not hurt to build all the different types of refineries we need to produce oil products to run the country. Our refineries use heavy crude from Venezuela and Canada. The refineries in the Middle East work with a lighter oil that we can not refine. Of course, we have coal and natural gas in abundance, should it become critical.

The issue is the many who will not vote, not those that will vote Dem or Repubulican. Gas and food prices are a big issue, since people vote with their wallets. The big problem is that the Republicans haven’t given the masses a reason to vote for them – or even show up to vote. In 2024, people showed up enmasse voting for Trump and the MAGA agenda. The Republicans (especially the Senate), have slow rolled addressing any of the MAGA agenda. Not being a Democrat isn’t enough.

I’ve been driving a diesel for years, always been more.
Price has never stopped me from going on.
Only thing that ever was a slight bump was a Peanut farmer that had ration days.
Had friends that owned a gas station so it wasn’t too bad, just couldn’t let the public see that there was gas.
Price doesn’t keep me from going on either. If I want to go, I go. Sold my diesel pick up years ago, long before what we see today. I sold my camper and had no reason to use as a daily any longer. I do miss the towing power and torque on demand tho.
Sept-Oct 2004 was when the price of diesel went from 15 cents under gas to 15 cents over gas. I know this because I’d bought my diesel car 3 months before this happened, in part because diesel was cheaper than gas.
Even at current prices, it’s still cheaper to drive the diesel than my gas car, the mileage is that much better. But every trip to town for job or any other reason is $8.30 for the diesel, $9 for the gas.
Guess l have been driving diesels longer as l remember diesel being 30 cents less than gas, l also remember fill my farm diesel tank fo 67 cents a gallon back in 2002

The timing has little to do with elections. The rising prices of food due to crop failures due to weather, Hormuz, and Iran take time to work through to our grocery stores. A few months after each event, it shows up at the cash register.

Things haven’t improved for me because my check has stayed the same since long before this war started. The unfortunate part of this massive fiscal stimulation created the OBBB and the foreign investment monies that the President negotiated and attracted into our economy is that the inflation pressures due to the Iran conflict has has dictated an adverse monetary policy environment. For all 47’s righteous complaints about powell, it would be imprudent for Warsh to lower rates as the president continues to argue for. Had Warsh come into the Fed and been able to cut rates in June, we would have fiscal and monetary hitting a balanced harmony over the next three months in a way most of us have never seen.
You’re forgetting who dictates the markets, Bond investors. Our government borrows from these folks, the creditors, and President can want the lowest rates in the world but the creditors say, “Sounds great Mr. President but until you stop these wars and stop the spending at the rates we see happening, we’ll stick with demanding a higher yield if you continue down this path, otherwise, we just stop buying your debt and let the Treasury do it”!
Warsh is being prudent here. Of course everyone would like to go back to the 0 or 1% rates but those were not normal. The Fed always overshoots on rates.

It is a structural flaw that lets Washington point to a rising GDP number while the underlying productive economy tells a different story.
That’s why investors pay more attention to the bond markets, not CPI, PPI, NFP, PCE, the Fed (Trapped anyway) or political hyperbole. None of that matters. So unless you trade for a living, you’ll never understand it.
The #1 cause of inflation is war, #2 is Government Spending. Keep this in mind when we drift further into a Digital Currency. In order to fund the government, it’s the people, who will now fund it 100%.
GDP = Consumption (Goods & Services), Investment, Government Spending, Export minus Import. Total personal income includes both private and public income. On a typical accounting ledger, a public employee would become both an asset and a liability. But in government, they disregard all that nonsense and call it GDP.

Rising fuel prices, ( gasoline, diesel, heating oil, etc) have the impact on consumer spending because that is less money to spend on other things.

Winter is going to be painful for some folk this year heating their home. AC is a luxury but heat isn’t. This summer, we were screwed with high prices and government leeches (Congress) allowing 15% ethanol in the fuel blend too.

When people focus on a ‘Domestic’ issue, specifically stating “in this country”, it becomes a problems that Americans often repeat. Everything is connected globally, so when the Straits of Hormuz is disrupted, this affects everyone around the globe. When Saudi Arabia is trapped between two countries, Iran and Yemen through the Houthi’s in the Red sea, Ukraine bombing Russia’s refineries, this has tremendous implications on the global economies. It creates a supply and demand issue. The world economy has lost at least 7 million BPD since this Iran conflict started, how many BPD would you think needs to be replenished to just get back to break even, 7, 10, 14, 21 million BPD?
The big players have manipulated markets for thousands of years and it’s a great go-to for shiny object purposes. But a country cannot go around blowing stuff up and cry manipulation, that’s not how the real world works. Nor can Americans ignore what drives the entire global economy, which is energy. If other nations who produce the products that Americans purchase, it becomes a great concern if they are having to pay higher transportation costs, insurance on their tankers, receiving the oil products they need, this then raises costs across all boards. It’s called Cost-Push inflation. It’s what happened in the mid 1970’s into the early 1980’s when Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker raised interest rates to 14% never realizing it was the Cost-Push inflation that he could not control. Better known as Stagflation. Lastly, what if certain countries who manufacture the world’s goods, receives very little or no oil at all?
Stagflation has a third component, high unemployment.
Unemployment was in the mid to upper teens during that period. Additionally high income tax rates didn’t help.
That is why when you look at a chart of the stock market back then the high Fed rate coupled with President Reagan’s tax cuts was like a switch had been turned on. For the previous 16 years the stock market was essentially flat. Then it took off.

It has been mentioned many times but once again, the oil that comes out of the ground in the US is different and the refinery capacity is not there although it is being built. Refineries prefer the oil from the Middle East.
In short, there are different types of oil.

I spent this last Saturday night hanging out with my grand daughter and her friends and was mildly surprised by their conservatism. The young are the Americans I’ve been worried about most but these young adults, all 18-23, are aware and are thinking for themselves. It was a small sample, 9, but probably more valid than most polls we get scammed with. If they represent only half of their generation, they’ll be fine. All of them understand not voting is not an option. I hope the rest of us won’t let them down.
Anecdotal, but just drove through most of Kansas on I-70 and dropped down South on I-35. The crops were plentiful including grains sorghum, corn, wheat, & hay. Cattle on every hill. I’m not sure about the drought conditions. Pretty sure Sundance has addressed commodity prices being manipulated by traders. I personally don’t think there is an oil shortage. Fake news can allow diesel to jump significantly because Ukraine destroys a Russian refinery? Don’t buy it. Oh, and the oil pumps were everywhere & the pumps were working hard.
