CANADA – Prime Minister Mark Carney says his government will open up Canada’s four largest airports to private investment, but that Ottawa will maintain ownership of airport land.
The prime minister said the private money will be sought through “long-term concessions” to operate these airports, which would include Toronto Pearson International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, Trudeau International Airport in Montreal and Calgary International Airport.
“The government of Canada will retain ownership of the underlying land and assets, but we will unlock their true value by bringing in new capital and expertise to their operations and growth,” Carney said during an address at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto on Tuesday morning. (read more)

Australia privatised it’s airports a few decades ago. Here’s what happens.
The first thing customers notice is a HUGE increase in parking fees and a reduction in parking availability (because many near terminal spots are designated VIP at insane charges that rich people pay happily).
Second, airlines ‘gate charges’ are increased steeply. The airlines have no option but to pay (where else are they going to take-off and land? Many airports are a monopoly). Those charges are then passed onto the customer.
The one positive is that services and facilities are somewhat improved.
Don’t forget all the signage in Chinese that magically appears, and often it has priority over the native one. Know someone who recently flew into Auckland, he said he thought he’d landed in the wrong country.
