Hi john – that was me making mention of my evening activity….. I’ve had this little guy for about twelve years now and it suits my abilities and needs pretty well. Any comments you might have would very likely increase my understanding!! 🙂 The FIRST mistake I made after I got it (and was so proud of it) was to drop it into light conversation with friends, wanting to share about my new log splitter.
A generational old Oregon country guy was standing nearby and kindly asked, “How big is it??” Me: 5 Ton – He: “That’s nice. Mine is 35 Tons”.
I’m 82 now and likely it will see me through. I really do appreciate its utility very much! My son does the big wood cutting, and trimming the big stuff down to where I can then split it to fit the fireplace. Good exercise, and keeps me out of the gambling dens.

I’m jealous. I have a log splitter but it’s an implement for a skid steer. Had to sell the skid steer when money got tight during Covid. I could reach up into trees and snap off dead limbs. Then chop the limb on the ground into short logs. Then split the logs into firewood. And all that from inside an air conditioned cab! Ah, the good old days.
5 tons is plenty for firewood jobs. And there’s nothing as relaxing as sitting beside a real fireplace.
Not sure I can impart much wisdom other than: double your productivity by using a cross blade … 4 pieces of wood each pass instead of just 2 with a standard single blade. And I learned the hard way to keep your cut wood off of the ground so it lasts for more than one season instead of rotting. You probably knew that but I can be stupid sometimes. I just didn’t realize how quickly wood decomposes when touching dirt as opposed to a concrete driveway.
Hardware stores or lumber stores in my little town will sell their excess pallets for $1 after receiving shipments just to get rid of them. Great for stacking a cord of wood and when the pallet eventually rots, just throw those planks on your fire.
There are so many pallets laying around (for the taking) in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, so in the years where I’ve had two cords delivered, I had to use those in addition to the great 4′ X 2′ frames my late husband built (from scraps that he picked up at Home Depot). Yes, I always have everything off the ground, and under rain shelter. Yeah, the 5T has been perfect for me. Thanks, john.

Illinois discovered that federal immigration agents had gained access to state camera information despite restrictions. Now we learn the system is being searched for loitering and vagrancy. Yet they continue telling us not to worry because safeguards are coming. Flock has announced shorter default retention periods, case codes, auditing, and other controls. Fine. None of that changes the fundamental question: Why should government possess the ability to reconstruct the movements of millions of innocent people in the first place?
The Fourth Amendment was not written with an exception saying government may watch everyone so long as a private corporation owns the cameras. I wrote earlier this year about the FBI admitting that it purchases commercially available location information on Americans. This is the loophole they have discovered. Government does not always need to build the surveillance system itself anymore. Private corporations collect the information, construct the databases, and develop the technology. Government simply purchases access or contracts for the service. The private sector builds the cage and government gets the key.
People keep saying, “I have nothing to hide.” That is perhaps the most dangerous response imaginable. Liberty was never based upon proving to government that you have nothing to hide. Government was supposed to prove that it had probable cause to investigate YOU. We have turned that principle upside down. Everyone is monitored first, the information is stored, and government searches the database later when it decides somebody has become interesting. You do not need to commit murder. You do not need to rob a bank. You apparently do not even need to steal a car. You can be searched because somebody decided you were loitering…”

We probably need them, somewhere, somehow, but putting them in areas where people live doesn’t seem advisable. Nor do I like the idea of even more of our diminishing farmland being utilized for this purpose.

Make them build their own power plants on site. SMR’s: small modular reactors. Cutting edge nuclear plants. No outside, overhead power lines required. A 20 kilowatt unit can fit in a shipping container. If they need megawatts or gigawatts they can build a plant on a few acres.

If you line a room or container with it, it blocks the transmission of noise. Pretty incredible stuff.
I live in the country and also don’t want to see farmland disappear, but if a family wants to sell out and make millions that’s their choice. There could be zoning laws passed forcing buildings to be underground with agriculture still possible on the surface and advances in that industry will probably continue to increase crop yields so less acreage is needed.
Also, maybe blighted cities can offer tax incentives to build data centers in abandoned buildings and rundown parts of town avoiding rural areas completely and at prices that are competitive with “cheap” farm land.

My son had one with self driving. He loved to show everyone how it worked – taking us out hands-off, turning around in the seat,. He used it alot to keep the kids in line in the back seat, checking his phone, working in the car.
It warned him he was “driving distracted”. He laughed. He ignored it a few times. After a few warnings the car turned all the features off.
His ended up getting sideswiped in a parking lot. About $1800 dollars in damage. Insurance company told him he’d have to take it to a Tesla dealer. He told them he’d just pay out of pocket at a local shop. Somehow Tesla got wind of it – he was informed that his warranty would be voided unless the dealer did the work. Tesla dealer’s repair estimate was so high, insurance company totaled the car.

The first “good” cell phone was made by Nokia. Our CIA and Deepstate took it away from them to be built in the USA or threatened to ban all Nokia products. Soon afterwards the USA started creating their own using the Nokia cellphones as their model. Next they added in all sorts of Deepstate hacks, paths and tracking to gain Control.
I believe the Deepstate is doing that same thing with AI, using China, Skynet, and every other thing they can think of as a big stick to control it.
Ok I guess I see this from another side. I have never listened to Jensen before, but WOW he is impressive. He is obviously very smart, out there , understands his universe. I have to agree with a lot of what he said. I just don’t see AI as being a bad thing. YES you have bad apples in every barrel, but 3rd party, outside “auditors” as he talked about is a good thing. And a lot of this a fear, and you know what Sundance about fear. When the electricity and the light bulb were invented everyone thought it would kill us, well it didn’t . Trains would mess up your innards because humans shouldn’t be traveling that fast which at the time was about 40MPH. So I say educate yourself on AI, read, listen to the ones that actually know what they are doing. Not the controlled media or paid for politicians. Just my take
Machines don’t have self-awareness and living consciousness, therefore they will never have an ‘ego’.
At this point, I think I would prefer robots.
