Most casual EU observers have missed the connection between President Trump eliminating the U.S-Europe Marshall Plan via entirely new trade and tariff policies, and the aggregate financial collapse of the European Union.
Over four years (1948-1952), the United States provided $13.3 billion (equivalent to approximately $137 billion in 2025) directly to 17 Western European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, West Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. The intent was to rebuild Europe after World War II. However, included in the plan was a later system of one-way tariffs, where EU Countries would high-tariff U.S. goods and the U.S. would not tariff EU goods imported.
The direct funding ended in 1952, but the indirect funding via tariffs never ended until President Donald J Trump triggered reciprocal tariffs against Europe thereby removing the one-way benefit. This created an immediate and growing problem for Europe – particularly noted in the EU industrial base.
Simultaneous to this EU tariff reset, President Trump levied tariffs against China. To offset the possibility of economic losses, and specifically to fund Beijing’s subsidies to impacted Chinese manufacturing, China stopped purchasing European industrial machines. This trade and tariff approach hit Europe twice as hard. First from American tariffs and second from diminished Chinese industrial purchasing. Immediately, Europe started looking for alternate sources of funds. That’s where the idea to tax American tech companies entered the discussion in Brussels. Today, President Trump addressed this directly.

After having fined Apple, for no reason at all, 15 Billion Dollars, Meta, 3 Billion Dollars, Amazon 2.5 Billion Dollars, and many others, we have just been informed that Google, a truly advanced and amazing group, has been fined yet another 1 Billion Dollars, without explanation. This brings the Google total to over 18 Billion Dollars!
This illegal and highly discriminatory practice started at these high levels during the first year of the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration, but it’s not going to continue during the Trump Administration. The United States of America is not a “PIGGYBANK” for Europe, nor will we allow it to be! Keep in mind, all of this EU regulatory and compliance control is at the forefront of another element, the AI race.
In the USA we do not want a singular AI model to win support of the United States government and then end up with an AI regulatory system where the govt can start defining terms of “safety” to eliminate information adverse to the interests that regulate it. However, we can almost guarantee that Europe will select an approved singular AI model, predictably regulating it and taxing the use of it accordingly.
When rejecting Trump’s tariffs, SCOTUS said the President doesn’t have the power to tariff them but he does have the power to reject all their imports completely. Meaning their products can’t be sold in the U.S. at any price.
President Trump can order that today.
Do that for a while and the EU will do whatever President Trump says.

I had to “sneak” these in. She was probably right, as I saw my college classmates purchasing newly-canned Coke in our dorms in the mid-1960s. I remember classmates telling me they could taste the difference between canned and bottled Cokes.

I’m not aware of problems with nut oils. Olive, avocado, and coconut oils are cold-pressed fruit oils, which generally do not cause the problems that seed oils can.

I refrigerated my olive oil to see what didn’t thicken up. I spilled the loose oil in the garbage can. Now at least I have a purer olive oil.

I lived for several years in a wealthy Jewish community where many had Nannie’s and housekeepers from Poland. Almost all the those employers provided the Polish women with extensive dental care, much to their credit.

At Costco’s you can buy the Coca Cola made in Mexico where they use cane sugar instead of corn syrup and there’s a big difference in taste. I love them as they are like what I had as a kid. I’m 86 years old Texan and I remember when manufacturing made in the USA of Coca Cola used cane sugar. Definitely, a better taste option.

If memory serves, Coca-Cola still features coca leaves as an ingredient (and the company actually has a special permit from USGOV to import them). They just neutralize/remove the cocaine before the leaf extract goes into the drink.

Your story reminded me of a recent pharmaceutical product, Sharon, called “Flunada”. It was a nasal spray which I kept reading about from commenters elsewhere. Knocked whatever flu or other respiratory ailment one might have deader than dead in about one to two days.
So we bought a bottle; and by golly, the reviews were 100% accurate.
When I tried to order some more (Amazon) to have on hand ” in case”? It was “unavailable” and has been ever since. I suspect Big Pharma got wind of it, as it was both ridiculously inexpensive and effective.

We adopted the practice, as well around the time of the planned pandemic , and without Covid vaccines, neither of us got sick.
Xclear is a great product. I use it traveling and anytime I will be in crowded spaces. I started using it during covid. It contains xylitol which apparently keeps baddies from colonizing in the nasal assages.

The dissent by Alito, Thomas and Kavanaugh noted that Trump can reinstate many of the tariffs through other authorities – such as to respond to unfair trade practices. So he is probably on safe ground to retaliate against the Europeans’ unfair fines.

NO, that is not what SC ruled. They ruled only on specific applications of tariffs. The President has many other tariff avenues to use and has been using them. The President has been using one avenue to tariff every country 10% that had been going on till recently when the 150 day temporary use period expired. The 301 tariffs then kicked in.
We should reject all their imports anyway, we need to do more to sell our own stuff to get ourselves back into making everything we need again.

Make it so the Europeans themselves effectively pay the fines and not the U.S. companies that they are targeting, with the one condition that by accepting reimbursement they have not and will not give in on any non-monetary demands on their product that the EU might require.

The direct US funding of Europe didn’t really end in 1952. It only changed shape, morphing into US funding of NATO, US stationing of nuclear weapons in Europe and huge permanent US military bases in Europe. Those subsidies offload many billions per year from what the Europeans would otherwise need to fund.

Ok, this graph has some weird results. As an IT person watching my U.S. based company moving to India, you know, because talent, I was immediately drawn to the Talent part of the Metrics. I’m not sure, but it looks like the symbol for the number one country in AI talent is Singapore? While the best IT talent is still here in the US, I wouldn’t anticipate any statistic to give us our due in the area of AI. But Singapore? I guess companies looking to India are looking in the wrong direction!
“Back in the day,” Europe powerfully took care of itself. They were a robust market that America sought to buy from.
They needed short-term help to recover from the devastation of war. (In part, to avoid desperation causing war to break out again.) But the Marshall Plan as written had an expiration date: enough time to get back on their feet, expecting that (of course) they would. Then, the assistance, surely no longer necessary, would end.
I’m sick and tired of Europe being baggage that we’re supposed to be hauling about for free. And, where did EUROPEAN pride and resiliency go? Why aren’t they “making Europe Great Again?” They are humiliating … themselves! 😳

Thank you for stating this. I’m in InfoSec and see this so often. When things happen it is American companies discovering vulnerabilities and doing great research not European companies. Yet every 5 minutes an American company is fined due to some BSC rule courtesy of the EU. I for one am tired of it and thanks be to God for President Trump.
But how will Europe continue to pay the welfare for the mass influx of poor criminal foreign aliens they imported without U.S. taxpayer dollars?
