President Trump pointed out Canada’s forestry mismanagement and their failure to follow through with previous promises of investment that have led to catastrophic wildfires now producing smoke streams making U.S. Northern cities and states live under dangerous conditions.
Prime Minister Mark Carney was asked about the U.S. government position, and he immediately hit back by saying the cause of Canada’s wildfires is ‘climate change’ and President Trump’s unwillingness to support the Paris Climate Treaty has created the problem that Canada is now dealing with.
In short, according to the official policy of the Canadian government, their wildfires are caused by Trump’s refusal to accept global “climate change” policies. WATCH:
It should be noted that Canada clutches its pearls, claiming the USA should send “support” to assist Canada fighting wildfires instead of blaming them for mismanagement. However, reciprocity is a big problem.
Most of the firefighting takes place as an outcome of private-public contracts for costs. {SOURCE} The Canadian government blocks U.S. companies from fighting fires in Canada because the Canadian government wants to only pay Canadian companies and workers. U.S. firefighting is not allowed to assist in Canada and get reimbursed.
Conversely, the Canadians quickly want to come to the U.S. to fight fires because the USA reimburses firefighting companies at a higher rate than Canada. [SOURCE] The USA has no federal restrictions on Canadian firefighting assistance.
Canadian firefighting professionals would rather fight forest fires in the USA because they make more money. There is no incentive for U.S. firefighting professionals to volunteer their time and effort without getting reimbursed; which is the position of Canada.
In essence, come to Canada and fight our fires for free because we will only pay Canadians. However, also, let our Canadian firefighters come to the USA and make money. {SOURCE} It is a very Canadian argument.

I was on a short four-day vacation. Went down to the beach Tuesday was beautiful but the smoke was bad on Wednesday and worse on Thursday. Friday was worse than Thursday. Got home last night and my throat is still raw and my eyes dry and red.

Hard to fathom how any discussion of Canadian wildfires doesn’t touch on the difference between boreal and coniferous forests and how the current Canadian wildfires are mostly in the boreal forest which is mostly in uninhabited areas, without any road access and virtually no human presence whatsoever.
Some climate activists were caught starting forest fires up in Canada last time the fires were this bad. I don’t currently have the link to the local news report back then but maybe someone else here does.

The more I learn about Canada, its politics and yes, even its people (the majority of whom I’m given to understand think they’re Europeans); the more strongly I dislike that country.
The easiest, most cost effective solutions to fighting the fires in Canada and the US are to have a multi-faceted proactive approach of using: prescribed burns under very favorable conditions, putting out fires immediately when fire danger is high, and logging more tracts of timber using clearcuts of under 100 acres (larger clear cuts in remote areas) and much larger tracts of select cuts (thinning the timber and at same time knocking over a significant amount of the dead trees).
Logging the timber reduces the chance of larger fires by creating fire breaks and reducing fuel for the fires and is one of the best options where access is practical because it generates revenue from the logging companies which competitively bid on the timber and pay for the trees they cut by the estimated cords of wood in an area to be logged.
While logging an area, they can push over dead trees with their grapple skidders as they drive back and forth from the landing areas where the trees are cut to length to be hauled to the mills.
Pushing dead trees over reduces fire hazard significantly as the dead trees are in contact with the ground absorbing water from the soil, becoming punky (wet and rotting) and rot much more rapidly. While, of course, leaving some dead trees standing for birds to feed on insects inhabiting the trees.
Logging generates jobs for people in small to large communities, and revenue to the provinces or states in the US by the money the companies pay for the timber (stumpage price per cord of timber) corporate taxes and personal income taxes of logging co. and its employees and the support companies and their employees all while reducing future fire hazard.
The support jobs created to support logging often benefit people across multiple states or provinces.
Additional aircraft and pilots should be added, if necessary, to put out the fires from the air immediately when fires start during high fire danger times and are small enough to suppress primarily from the air with only small sized ground crews needed to check for hot spots and make certain the fire is completely out.
Our own US Forest service screws up hugely at times when they merely ‘monitor’ small wildfires at times when the Fire Hazard is HIGH while you and me would not be allowed to get a burning permit to burn a small brush pile in our yard while standing next to it with a garden hose at the ready.
A case in point is the Bear Trap fire currently burning in northern MN. This fire contributed to the smoke from Canadian fires and had most of northeast MN at the smoke level of 500 – hazardous to our health for one or more days and at levels near or above 200 for multiple days (still at a level effecting people’s health).
It was caused by lightning on July 7 and was less than five acres when the US Forest Service became aware of it. They foolishly only monitored it while we were under a High Fire Hazard with no burning permits allowed.
The fire grew extremely fast two days ago, expanding by 24,000 acres in only 24 hours. It has now consumed over 34,000 acres and now has over 300 firefighters fighting the fire. It will likely cost over $500,000 to suppress (low end estimate if mother nature helps out with high humidity, low winds, and rain). In a worst-case scenario, it will cost multiple millions to suppress if it takes off again (the last 24 hours of growth was a mere 123 acres in large part because of a 180 degree wind change, higher humidity and some rain).
In a similar situation years ago, the US Forest service monitored a small lightning strike fire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). I called 911 when I spotted the smoke while driving to a friend’s Celebration of Life Memorial northeast of Ely, MN.
I fully expected to see a full assault of aircraft suppressing the fire after the memorial was over. Instead, I found an info sheet I had missed seeing posted at a public boat launch where I had pulled over to call 911.
The informational sheet indicated the Forest Service was monitoring the fire (about 12 acres on the day I called about the fire to 911) .
I felt a little sheepish at first, but at the same time wondered why they would let it burn during the tinder dry conditions we were in.
Days after I called it in, the fire exploded into a conflagration which eventually consumed 92,000 acres and had over 800 firefighters involved at the peak of fighting it.
The total cost was TWENTY-ONE MILLION DOLLARS to suppress.
It would have cost less than $10,000 to suppress when they first discovered it and less than $50,000 to suppress it when I had called 911.
What is wrong with people in our forest service and in Canada’s forest service who think the common people can’t have a burning permit to burn a brush pile in their yard because the fire hazard is too high (rightly so), but decide to merely monitor a multi-acre fire in the forest under the same exact conditions?!

The sad thing is, there were no major repercussions for the inept foresters following horrible protocol and NOT watching extended weather forecasts closely enough. No one lost there job.

Wildfires in Canada are driven by domestic conditions (weather, fuel, geography), with climate change acting as a broad risk amplifier, not a single-country cause.
Cross-border firefighting cooperation exists and is routinely used, though contractual and pricing differences can create friction.
The dispute is less about “refusal” and more about different procurement systems and incentives, layered with political messaging on both sides.

I met him at a campaign event in Stevensville Montana, when we looked west toward fire raging over the flanks of the Bitterroot Range, and watched for-real orange flames leap hundreds of feet into the air driving the ugly shroud of gray-tan smoke that burned our eyes and lungs as we stood there.
As we looked at the fires I listened to his tone more than his words, and sensed his call to duty and eager commitment to do the right thing about forest management and fire supression – in addition to the usual issues. He knew – he owned the company and flew the waterbombers. Same guy who got decortated for hauling a wounded fellow warrior on his back, putting his own life at risk. He took an oath then and meant it.
He took another when he was sworn in as a senator. Some guys just operate on that high level of duty, service, and they know they can make a difference. Most don’t. Sheehey is one of the few – he’s for real.
