The Office of Senator Mitch McConnell has released a picture and statement intended to answer questions about the status of the Kentucky senator. However, many are questioning the content.
Personally, the accompanying image doesn’t really matter much – it is reported to be AI enhanced, but who can tell. However, the message that accompanies the picture? Well, that text is total BS and did not come from McConnell.
You can tell McConnell did not write it by the way it is written (particularly paragraph #2), and more importantly, there is no mention of condolence following Senator Lindsey Graham’s death.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following note to constituents regarding his hospitalization and recovery:
“To my fellow Kentuckians –
“When you elected me to a seventh term and made me our Commonwealth’s longest serving Senator, you did so trusting that I’d keep showing up to fight for you every day. And over the past several weeks, Elaine and I have appreciated both your well wishes and your honest questions about what was keeping me away from the Senate.
“You all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older. Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct – I can’t help it.
“But at the same time, I’ve had more than my share of experience with physical vulnerabilities. Surviving childhood polio meant spending my entire life with mobility challenges. They haven’t exactly gotten easier to manage with age. And last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.
“I can assure you that I’ve been a good patient. At my age, I tend to do what my doctors tell me to do. I’ve submitted to every test they can think of to help figure out what caused this incident. And I’m continuing to do everything they ask to speed my recovery. In fact, with signs of continued progress, I’ve been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where I’ll keep regaining my strength.
“As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet. But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you. I’ve been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team who help me provide timely constituent services across our Commonwealth. I’ve also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between.
“You’re right to expect your representatives to work hard for you. And part of my decision to retire at the end of my term this coming January was being honest about the demands of Senate work. But I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do.
“I’ll keep working hard to get back on the Senate floor as soon as possible. And I’ll keep you posted on the progress of my recovery. Until then, I’m so grateful for your prayers and well wishes.”

“Senator McConnell has experienced several falls throughout the year that have been attributed to his post-polio condition. He was admitted to the hospital four weeks ago after falling at home and sustaining minor injuries.
“A comprehensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team determined that he had no fractures, cardiac abnormalities, stroke, tumor, or hemorrhage. Early in his hospitalization, he developed pneumonia, which responded rapidly to antibiotic treatment.
“The remainder of his hospital stay focused on physical therapy and strategies to reduce his risk of future falls. He has been medically cleared to continue fully participating in his intensive physical therapy program.”

Lindsey Graham was 71 years old, had a family history of heart issues, was rumored to be a little too fond of the bottle, and had clearly put on a fair amount of weight over the past couple of years. I have zero issues believing that he had a catastrophic cardiac event and died before he could even get to the hospital. It happens every single day in this country but there are no headlines unless it happens to a United States Senator who is reported to be on an Iranian “kill list”…no story here, please move on!
Mitch McConnell is a COMPLETELY different story. He has been in obviously poor health for a couple of years, with repeated falls, “freezing” episodes, and clear cognitive issues. He was, according to EMS dispatch recordings, taken to the hospital on June 14th, unconscious, and undergoing CPR, which is far more brutal to the body than most people realize, especially if the body in question is 84 years old!
There was NO word from his office or his family until this past week, when a lot of people started pushing HARD for information…and suddenly, he is having 20 minute conversations with all kinds of different people! And now, lo and behold, he his office releases a photo of him, happily smiling, along with his adoring wife, dressed in civilian clothes and reading the local sports section, from a bed in an unnamed rehab center….

This dual command prevents both naive vulnerability and cynical aggression – the work of the Holy Spirit has been given us, and is in us and reflected through us.
Take heart. We are probably always going to be in school towards the next “graduation”; however, what comes from our hearts that are good, pure and holy is always good. We need to watch our own inclinations toward fighting the evil presented is so many ways, more and more acceptable in the material world these days. Truth is, it is increasingly more difficult; yet, we fight/resist our inclination to avoid pessimism, frustration and hopelessness; or to give up altogether. It does not get easier but it gets better – in the sense (we) start to learn and handle things better. We have those gifts and resources; some yet to be discovered.
IT is so true too to feel that the older we get, the less we know, or know nothing about life. Thing is, you know that’s not true either. You know. And soldier on.

AI may have been used, but who can tell?
If you have access to the original digital file, you can examine something called exifdata, which is metadata stored with the image that has a tremendous amount of information in it (among a great many things, camera settings, date and time, and location if taken with a GPS enabled device). That’s a long-winded way of saying, there are ways to tell that don’t rely on visual examination of the image. I would suspect, given who’s in the image, that if the exifdata is blank or is obviously truncated, then, someone scrubbed it and that would be a dead giveaway.

If you work in healthcare, NHnative, you should recognize the McConnell seems to have PPS. Have you worked with polio cases or PPS cases yourself? Be glad you have never walked in his shoes. With all my time in hospitals with polio kids, even at my early age I could see two ways polio cases reacted: “poor me, feel sorry for me” and a second was “I’m as good as anyone one, don’t need help, don’t want your pity”. McConnell is the second group. Ditto FDR (I know, terrible president), and if you remember, Bill Cullen. I, like Mitch, suffered polio as a child. I developed what is known as post polio syndrome, or PPS, in my 60s. I fall several times per week, thus far avoiding hitting my head. PPS creates multiple issues with fatigue, muscle pain. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Read about it online, an interesting disorder. There is no “cure” btw. Perhaps I had a more damaging case of polio than Mitch. I wore metal leg braces until I was 18, following 9 major surgeries- every other summer. As a tomboy, I was always outside even in summers with full length casts following surgeries. I fell down a lot. I mean a LOT. I learned to fall and protect my head. Maybe Mitch didn’t perfect falling as a kid.Maybe I am just luckier. I think though many of us disagree with some of his positions and votes (I do), please respect him for what he has overcome in his life.
