The points Ambassador Hoekstra makes at the end of this interview are exactly on point, and yet Zandbergen pretends not to understand them.
The American govt is not running anti-Carney advertising in Canada. Americans are not banning Canadian products. The American Government is not telling Americans not to travel to Canada. The American govt has not banned Canadian companies from bidding on contracts. These are all actions taken by the Canadian government.

Well, I won’t ignore my family’s heritage.
Despite Canada’s current 20,000 active duty troops and another 20,000 reservists, I wonder if they have gotten a bit soft under their leadership. Canada has participated well in both world wars in the past. As it currently stands, it seems Canada depends the United States to thwart wars in the North America region and possibly for serious protection, which Ambassador Hoekstra kinda pointed out but the little lady chose not to go there. I can understand why. It’s because she knows the answer. The dependency from Canada is huge. I’m sure if their homeland had problems arise, Canada would deal with it effectively. But on a larger scale, I highly suspect they would expect America to intervene. It seems like it would take some real nudging to get reciprocal support from them, even if asked. I might be wrong. But it sure feels that way to me.
There are white countries that are embracing socialism-communism, open borders, anti-white, high taxes, government censorship, two tiered policing/courts, and bowing to Muslims/Chinese, Pakistani/etc.
We have less and less in common with these countries. I’m not racist enough to think that a white person who loves communism is someone I would choose to be in my foxhole over a black/brown person who is MAGA-America First.
Simple nudging, polite suggestions, and attempts to educate have failed many of these white nations. THEY chose this path. Sometimes it takes really, really bad times for people to learn where THEY failed in their choices.

Canada, like Europe, has run protectionist markets since WW2 reconstruction. They have quotas and tariffs on all sorts of US goods.

The protective markets started before the end of WW2. Prior to the war, Canada was a dominion with a small population (11.5 million) trading within the British Imperial system where imperial preference ruled.
After WW2, the self-governing, underpopulated dominions of the Commonwealth, especially Australia, gravitated toward the USA for protection that a weakened post-war Great Britain could not guarantee.
They also opened up their immigration laws to expand their populations.

There are independent Canadian news media. One is Rebel News. They have a good podcast. More Canadian should listen to it and they’d have a better. understanding of what’s going on.

We get (or used to get) a lot a Canadian summer tourists in my neck of the woods. And I will never forget seeing a post on another website in 2025, in which a Canadian asked if it was safe as a Canadian to visit the US.
Liberal Canadians are actually afraid for their physical safety when traveling within the US, because they believe they will be harassed and beaten for being Canadian.
Granted this was on a website known for being a leftist bubble, but still. The fact that a Canadian could seriously ask this question opened my eyes to the depth of control the Canadian media exerts how the average Canadian thinks, and it’s probably only a sliver of understanding that control.
I bet all the wait staff doesn’t mind not seeing Canadians. They are HORRIBLE tippers! And most have been coming to the US for years and know darn well that our waiters live on their tips, not their wages. Canadians also know about the free camping at Army Corps of Engineers managed camp sites and monopolize the spots. Yes, this rubs me the wrong way!
As a clarification that may or may not apply.
In France, it is posted in the window/door of every bar or restaurant either “Service Compris” or “Service Non Compris” . Canada/Quebec maintain close culture with France and have for many decades.
What that means is : “Services are Understood” meaning tipping is not necessary because the servers are paid a high wage. OR: “Services are NOT understood” which means the servers are not paid a wage at all and are only paid through gratuities.
In the EU/France (especially) Waiters/Servers/Bartenders are “professional” people in that they usually attend education and apprenticeship to become valuable to a restaurant or bar. They are not “low paid, low ability” people at all. They memorize the menu every day, know which wine/drink goes with which meal, they know exactly how to alter an order to the Chef to meet the expectations of a diner, etc. They are Not “order takers”.
So, to a Canadian, especially from Quebec, if they do not see “Service Non Compris” posted at the door/window of the restaurant, their assumption is that tipping is not necessary as the wait staff are fully paid without tips.
It could be a cultural thing, or maybe cheap ass people. I don’t know. I do know how tipping is handled in France and Eu as I’ve spent a great deal of time there. Stiffing a wait staff member who works only for tips is a tremendous insult, however the need for such tipping is clearly posted at the entrance.
Living in a golf community with a significant number of Canadian sunbirds and visitors, I was surprised to see the fearful attitude that US residents would not accept them and do horrible things to them. Particularly strange since many of these same Canadians had been wintering there for decades and were personally known by us. They were amazed we treated them cordially just as we always had. What lies the Canadian government and media must have been telling them. Oh Canada indeed!
People from Europe that traveled to the USA for FIFA said they had been lied to about the USA. What makes Canada any different?

that’s probably it, but there is also a high risk gamble to that play. For one, it forgoes billions of dollars of business in the next two + years (combined with the losses that are accumulating already for non negotiating). That’s a LOT of money to dismiss in the hopes that some future US Administration will deal more favorably. That going to be a very very risky bet and I would not make that bet. It seems avoidable. You take the deal and compromise now, recover some lost wealth…reorganize your economic policies domestically to deal with any deficits. Perhaps the bigger challenge is to step back away from becoming a consumer service economy and allowing China to rip you to threads. A challenge that does impact the US as well, we have the same risks there as well.

Canada and the US, a naturally continental sized border neighbor, with decades and decades of non hostility cannot get motivated to realize that together they are better off fighting the massive production engine of China, than alone? shameful. Plus portions of, and quotes from, these segments get promoted on all the other national and local TV and Radio channels, and newspapers, during the following 24 hours.

You know, for years, I never had an ounce of ill-will towards Canada. I still don’t. But they are really making it hard these days. The comment in the other interview Sundance posted a couple days ago, really took me to a place that I don’t like. I didn’t post in that comment board because I just couldn’t put my finger on what bothered me. It involved the interviewer asking Hoekstra what the impact to overall American liquor sales were as a consequence to Canadian provinces banning American liquor sales. This was in response to Hoekstra pointing out the unfairness of Canadian provinces banning American liquor companies. The tone of it was that because Canada was smaller, the small unfair impact should just be tolerated.
The absolute smug sense of entitlement stunned me. It’s like a 20-year-old entrusted with Dad’s credit card to get the car fixed going on a shopping spree while telling everyone, “Screw him, he can afford it”. They have benefitted immensely from the nature of their relationship with us all the while abusing the hell out of it. So much so, they now think they’re better than us and entitled to it. The absolute smugness… barf!

I’ve known most of this about the Canadian government vis a vis trade practices, censorship, etc. But what fascinates me is the utter “stone in his shoe” Sundance has for Canada.
I’d love to know this backstory. I could always reconcile the more undesirable parts of Canadian politics by reminding myself of two indisputable facts: the fundamental goodness of most Canadians I have met and known throughout my frequent border crossings. Secondly, the vast, pristine beauty of the land itself. Canada is so vast and beautiful and so sparsely populated that you can be in the wilderness in a matter of a few miles.

I don’t know about Sundance but my beef is Canada is a straw man for the Brits, always has been. But yes the land and the people are lovely.
I can’t speak for Sundance but for me, it’s the way the Canadians reacted to all of this. Rather than just negotiate a fair deal and knock off their underhand BS (especially with China), they ran all around the world trying to undermine us and even got into bed with our biggest threat and rival…. after DECADES of us taking care of them economically and militarily.

I started visiting Canada for fencing tournaments since the mid 1980s and it has always been Communist like. The last time I was in Canada was in 2019 and that will be my last. The place got progressively worse. All Commonwealth Wealth countries can go to Hell!
Agree. I flew there a few times to work for an American company having a convention there. I was being paid by the American company. Was there for just a couple of days each time and wasn’t stealing a job from a Canadian. They would take me or not hire anyone there. It was just as simple as that.
But EVERY time I went through customs they hassled me. Lots of questions. Didn’t like my answers. All about intimidation and making my trip inconvenient.
I despise them for it and have never gone back as a tourist. I’ll never vacation amongst those pompous asses and why I’m enjoying their upcoming humiliation so much.
I’ve been to Russia, Africa, and the Middle East and have been treated better.

And what would be the point in trying to engage with a frowning-faced talking head so steeped in her ignorance that she seems to treasure it, wear it like bling, hoping to impress her bosses at how she super mean and gritty her interviews can be! But Zanbergen’s focus was never on substance, only on zingers like, ‘you really don’t see why Canadians are mad at America?’ or ‘do you think Trump’s 51st state comments were helpful to the ongoing negotiations?’

Listening to this entire interview ,shows we have the right Ambassador in this situation; exudes patience with press pretenders while still getting the President’s message out.

I’ve been watching videos of Europeans saying how happy/surprised/pleased they are in their visit to America. The Europeans are happy and having a grand time the Canadians have been downright rude… and not just to Americans.
